Moving Into An Autumn of Grace

The Church is here...to help us. To “move” us outward in the direction

the Holy Spirit calls us; by serving others, as the very presence of Christ, in

doing the work that God gives us to do. As we enter September and the re-

engaging formal education for the children of our community, we might

now also start to consider how the Church, here through Zion in the

Anglican tradition of our faith, actually does that through preparation by

formation...for all ages.

We are called by God to grow spiritually, as well as in the other ways

that we acknowledge as the experience of life. The trick is, through Jesus,

to live within that experience of life so that we can recognize those spiritual

encounters when they happen….in other words, having the eyes to see and

the ears to hear. Whatever your age and level of life understanding, Zion

should seek to provide us with the real meat and potatoes of a meaningful,

spiritual challenge for growth. When we each discern the Holy Spirit

whispering “Time to move now", we need to have our spiritual bearings set

in a direction.

But, formation is just part of our focus. As we experience God’s

transformation of us through grace, we look for ways to “move” into a

fuller life in Christ. The purpose of the whole of Christ’s church is to equip

us for this move, this change into being the persons of action as God would

have us be. If “formation” is the setting-and-maintaining-of-the-course,

then “feeding and sustaining” might be the actual process of movement on

that course. If the church’s purpose is to equip or facilitate the faithful in

the way of living that faith in the world, “feeding and sustaining” combined

is the way the church helps get that done by enabling the faithful with their

vision of being Christ in the world.

Zion seems ready to try something extraordinary in this way, at least

from my personal and cumulative church experience. Our parish might take

time and effort to self-discern: asking God and ourselves, “Who are we, and

what can we do?” That in itself may not be extraordinary, but in asking

those questions without restriction or limits is. How bold are we in asking

those questions? How far are we willing to let God take us? Even now,

how is Zion the very instrument of God in feeding and sustaining you in

your life in Christ?

We’ll see . . . In the Love of Christ. Fr. Jim

Book of Common Prayer. It is a tradition at Zion to give graduating high school seniors a gift.

Maya graduated from The British School Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. She will be

attending Middlesex University in London where she will be studying visual communications. During her time at

school she was an active member of the school orchestra playing the violin as well as completing all 8 grades of

her violin exams given by the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM). She is also a proficient

dancer having taken classes in Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz and Hip Hop and has represented the U.A.E. in

ERICK KROLL’S FROM THE ORGAN BENCH

Summer is starting to wind down and the leaves on

some of the trees are starting to change color. I hope

everybody at Zion has had a chance to enjoy their

summer (we know what's coming in about three

months). Choir season is starting the second week of

September and we are in need of choir members; please

consider joining if you are so inclined. After

rummaging around in the choir room this summer, I

came across a book called The Portland Psalter that I noticed has been used

in the past and we will start using again soon. These psalms have a refrain

that is sung at the beginning with the verses sung by the choir; refrain

repeated every two verses or so and again at the end. Some of the organ

music you have heard lately is literally hot off the press through a service I

subscribe to and is most likely not to be heard anywhere else except at Zion.

Most of these are hymn arrangements that are in different keys and have

unusual chord progressions. Please feel free to linger in the church during

the Postlude. You might hear one of your favorite hymns played in a way

you have never experienced before.

Cheers,

Erick
