    Introduction: Gandhinagar

    Gandhinagar, the administrative capital of Gujarat was

    carved out of Ahmedabad district in late 1960s

    The district has four talukas, viz. Gandhinagar, Kalol,Dehgam and Mansa

    Gandhinagar is divided into 30 sectors formed by roads laid

    in a rectangular grid with each sector having its own

    shopping, health, housing colonies and community centres

    The city offers urban amenities which helps Gandhinagar in

    attracting and retaining suitable manpower

    Prestigious educational and upcoming research institutes

    support the education system

    Focus sectors:

    Economy and Industry Profile

    Services in the public sector, Electrical & Electronics, Textiles,

    Food Processing, IT/ITeS, Ceramics and Office Stationery are

    some of the major vocational and industrial activities in

    Gandhinagar

    Electronics and Textiles have been the main sectors of

    investment and employment in Gandhinagar district since the

    late 1980s

    The Food Processing industry of the district is well developed

    because of the proximity to agricultural districts such as

    Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Ahmedabad, Kheda, Anand, etc

    Infrastructure development is another sector that has opened

    up new opportunities for investment and employment

    With the recent surge in investments in the IT/ ITeS sector,

    Gandhinagar is progressively shaping into an attractive

    destination for IT/ ITeS companies

    Agriculture

    Major food crops, oil seeds and fruits

    produced in the district include rice, wheat,

    castor, rape & mustard, citrus fruits, ber,

    guava, pomegranate, papaya, etc

    Vegetable crops such as potato, brinjal,

    cabbage, okra, tomato, cauliflower, cluster

    bean and cow pea, etc. are cultivated in the

    district

    With a total production of 21,678 metric

    tonnes (MT) in 2006 - 07, Gandhinagar was

    the sixth largest producer of citrus fruits in

    the State

    Gandhinagar produces almost 8% of the total

    flower crops in the State

    It accounts for almost 15% of marigold

    production in Gujarat

    There are approximately 8,000 small scale industries (SSIs) in Gandhinagar providing employment to

    over36,000 persons

    Textiles, Wood products, Mineral based industries and Engineering are the major SSI sectors ofthe district

    Textile sector has attracted investments to the tune of INR 1,456 crore (USD 346.67 million) highest

    among investments in all the sectors in the district

    Mineral-based industries such as non-ceramic brick industry provide employment to about 64% of the

    manpower working in SSI sector

    New sectors such as industrial instruments,

    agricultural machinery, leather & leather goods and

    infrastructure projects witnessed investments worth

    INR 121 crore (USD 28.8 million) during the period

    1998 -2007

    Investments in the food processing industry

    increased from INR 245 crore during 1988 97 to

    INR 314 crore during 1998 - 07

    Office stationery and household goods witnessed a

    major surge in investments during 1998-07 over the

    prvious decade

    Miscellaneous machinery, engineering and ceramics

    The Government of Gujarat has been playing a very active

    role in promoting the State as a potential investment

    destination through a series of Vibrant Gujarat Global

    Investors Summits (VGGIS), organised every two years

    A total of 58 MoUs amounting to INR 7,801crore (USD

    1,857.433 million) of investments were signed for locations

    in Gandhinagar during VGGIS in the year 2003, 2005 and

    2007

    Sectors such as IT/ITeS, Biotechnology, Tourism, Textiles,

    Agro, Electronics, Engineering and Auto have attractedmaximum investments in the district

    15 MoUs worth INR 268.75 crore (USD 64 million) were

    signed for investments in IT/ITeS and Biotechnology

    sectors during the VGGIS 2005

    27 MoUs involving an investment ofINR 6,016 crore (USD

    1432.31 mn) were signed during VGGIS 2007. The

    investment is proposed to create new employment

    opportunities for1,71,637 persons

    Economy Drivers

    Being the State Capital, most of the State Government offices are

    located in Gandhinagar; hence a major section of the working

    population of Gandhinagar is employed in public sector services

    Recent surge in the growth of infrastructure projects in the district

    has increased the employment opportunities for the masses

    Close proximity to the agro-food and biotech clusters of

    Ahmedabad has opened up new avenues for the food processing

    industry, research centres, and educational institutes

    Small scale industry sectors such as textiles, electronics, mineral-

    based, wood products and engineering are the supporting pillars of the

    economy. They provide direct & indirect employment to over 40,000

    people in the district

    The Government of India plans to develop a Dedicated Freight

    Corridor (DFC) linking Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai

    The proposed DFC passes through six states in India, of which,

    Gujarat accounts for 38% (564 Km) of total DFC length (1483

    Km)

    The influenced area of150 Km on either sides of DFC is being

    developed as Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)

    Almost 62% of total area of Gujarat (18 out of 26 districts)

    would be benefited by DMIC development

    The State Government has identified 82 links in the DMIC

    influenced area to upgrade them into two/four lane

    Gujarat International Finance Tec-City

    Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT), a one stop

    destination for global financial service industry is being

    developed at Shahpur village on the banks of the Sabarmati

    river

    GIFT is being developed by Gujarat Finance City

    Development Company Ltd., a 50:50 joint venture between

    the Government of Gujarat and Infrastructure Leasing &

    Financial Services

    The project is slated to commence construction by March 2008

    The 500 acre mega project being developed at a cost of INR

    150 billion is expected to be completed by 2010

    The project will also house a 250 acre SEZ and is targeted to

    generate nearly 1 million new jobs

    Gandhinagar district enjoys uninterrupted 24 hour power supply

    The main power station is located in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat.

    One 400 KV service station, two 220 KV service stations and one 132 KV service station supply power

    throughout the district. Also 66kv s/s across the district.

    Gujarat is the source of over 39% onshore natural gas production

    A State-wide integrated gas grid system is being set up in Gujarat with the

    primary objective of building a continuous state-wide gas supply system

    for industrial, commercial, vehicular and household use

    Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz Gujarat

    Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), Irrigation Canal and Sardar Sarovar Project.

    The district houses some prestigious research and educational

    institutes such as the Institute for Plasma Research, Indian Institute

    for Advanced Research and National Institute of Fashion

    Technology (NIFT)

    Indian Institute of Information Technology will be established in

    Gandhinagar

    The Institute for Plasma Research in Gandhinagar is an autonomous

    plasma physics research centre that focuses on research in various

    aspects of plasma science for industrial applications

    The establishment & development of National Institute of

    Pharmaceutical Education & Research (NIPER) in 60 acres of land in

    Gandhinagar is in progress Indian Institute for Advanced Research located in Koba,

    Gandhinagar is concerned with biotechnology based advanced

    research set up by Puri Foundation

    Health

    Gandhinagar hosts some of the best hospitals in the State such

    as Apollo Hospital , Kanoria Hospital and the Civil Hospital

    which have the facilities and the expertise to provide excellent

    health services

    The 400-bed Apollo Hospital in Gandhinagar treats an

    average of 10,000 patients every year and is the only hospital in

    Gujarat with a 1.5 Tesla MRI scan . Built over 10 acres of land,

    the hospital has 75 CCU beds and is the largest corporate

    hospital in Gujarat

    Tourism

    Akshardham Swaminarayan Temple built in pink stone and white

    marble, spread over 9 hectares is one of the citys main tourist

    attractions. The Narayan Sarovar, which surrounds the 3.3 meter idol

    of Swaminarayan contains water from 151 rivers and lakes

    Adalaj Step Wells were built in 1499 by Queen Ruda, the wife of

    Vaghela Chief Vikramsinh, as a resting place for travellers. The

    steps descend 5 stories in elaborately carved geometric, floral and

    animal designs

    The city also has the Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park, which

    exhibits dinosaur eggs and is said to be the second largest dinosaur

    park in the world. The park was established by the Geological

    Survey of India and happens to be the only dinosaur museum in the

    country
