HANSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Hansville Historical Society will hold its usual monthly meeting on Friday, March 18, at 10 am at the Greater Hansville Community Center. A short program on

the history of the area is planned. The Society is collecting military and civilian experiences that took place in the North Kitsap area during World War II so if you wish to submit a story or be interviewed about that - give us a call. We are also look-ing for any historical materials that might be interesting to be kept for posterity.

We reprinted the “People of North Kitsap Peninsula” book. It was so well received, it completely sold out last fall within one month. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, it sells for $35 plus mailing costs. Contact Red Denson or Gay Davis for a copy (360-638-1773).

Finally, the Society is looking for land or a building that can be used as a repository for our historical archives and serve as a display facility. We would be willing to update the building. Come and join us at the meeting if you are interested in the history of the area and its people.

CASS TURNBULLS TIPS FOR TUNING YOUR PRUNING TECHNIQUES

Do you have the yard that has become just a little wild? Do you have plants that have grown just a little too tall for regulations? Or maybe your plants are sneak-

ing into their neighbor? The Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club has your solution with Cass Turnbull, an entertain-ing & informative nation-wide speaker on proper prun-ing techniques & landscape renovation. Cass is an author, teacher, ISA-certified arborist, certified landscaper, veteran Master Gardener, and President/Founder of PlantAmnesty.

Cass Turnbull left the Seattle Parks department in 1986 after 11 years to start her own landscape renovation business in 1986. One year later she founded PlantAmnesty, a non-profit organization with over 1,000 members in 32 states and three countries. PlantAmnesty’s mission is to “end the senseless torture and mutilation of trees and shrubs”. The goal of the organization is to educate commercial and private sectors on responsible and appropriate pruning and landscape manage-ment practices, establishing a standard of quality care for the urban ecology.

Cass studied for a liberal arts degree at Fairhaven College of Western Washington State University in Bellingham, Washing-ton. She is certified to teach at Washington State Vocational Schools and is a Washington State Certified Landscaper, an ISA Certified Arborist and a veteran of the King County Mas-ter Gardener program. She has also studied and taught at the University of Washington’s Center for Urban Horticulture and Edmonds Community College.

Now Cass spends half her time in the field with hands-on maintenance and renovation projects. The other half is spent working through PlantAmnesty to promote better care of plants. She has won several awards including, Seattle’s Friend of Trees award, The National Arbor Day Education award, and three International Society of Arboriculture awards. This work includes not only teaching and lecturing, but the creation of slideshows, videos, instructional pamphlets, radio and televi-sion public service announcements, a newsletter, and instruc-tive pamphlets.

Armed with a sense of humor and a mission, Cass has gained considerable local and national press for the subject of prun-ing reform. She has published many articles and two books including “Cass Turnbull’s Guide to Pruning”. The Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club begins at 9:00 am at Buck Lake Community Center with coffee and refreshments before the business meeting at 9:30 am. The featured program begins at 10:45 am. Guests are always welcome. Please join us to learn more about Cass Turnbull’s tips for Tuning your Prun-ing Techniques. For more information about our garden club, see our website at www.flotsamandjetsamgardenclub.com.

FREE MONTHLY CHAIR YOGA AT GHCC

The Greater Hansville Community Center and Marcia Ran-dall DeBard are offering free monthly chair yoga. EVERY-ONE is welcome; it is for all levels. Even if you haven’t

done yoga before - in fact, ESPECIALLY if you haven’t done yoga before - please come try it out. We’ve gotten more orga-nized than we were when we first started last year, so if you haven’t come for awhile, come see the improvements we’ve made.

For example, now Manya O’Shea helps demonstrate the poses so that we can simultaneously demonstrate both a “totally in the chair” as well as an “up and down version”. Everyone faces us - so everyone can see and hear what we’re doing. If you would like to do the up and down version please bring a mat so your chair won’t slide. Blanket and a yoga strap would be welcome. Yoga blocks might be useful but not necessary.

GHCC ENDOWMENT FUNDBy Lois Lee

The following people have very generously donated to the Endowment Fund for the Greater Hansville Community Center. We

thank you very much for your gifts.

As you know, ”the community center is central to the concept of community, it is the cement that holds us together”, (quote from our com-munity survey). We are very happy that dona-tions to the Endowment Fund continue to grow and that you, as givers, continue to believe it is worthwhile. We have now entered the sec-ond stage of our fundraising efforts. We still very much welcome cash contributions and are attempting to get the word out that we welcome the idea of long term gifting to this fund. We have a new brochure on ways you can donate to the Center. It is available by writing to P.O. Box 133, Hansville, WA 98340. THANK YOU AGAIN for your confidence in the Center.

BINGO NIGHT IS BACK AT GHCC

The Bingo event on New Years eve was so much fun that by popular demand it will return to the Greater Hansville Community Center on Saturday, April 2.

The doors will open at 5:30 pm so players can get their game packs in time for the “Early Bird” session that will start at 6:30 pm. The regular game session will begin at 7:00 pm. The Bingo games will go until approxi-mately 9:30 pm. There will be a refreshment bar with food, snacks, soft drinks and coffee available.

The amount of the winning payoffs will be determined by the number of game cards purchased so the more people that play, the

larger the cash prizes will be. Everyone is invited to attend and participate. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Come and play and you could be the next big winner. For more information, contact: Fred or Jo Nelson at 360-638-0000.

HANSVILLE HELPING HANDS“The mission of the Hansville Helping Hands, a Washington State Nonprofit cor-poration, is to assist in serving the needs of our community and neighbors, and to continue to manage the Hansville Cemetery in a manner that maintains the spirit

and heart of the community”

Mark your calendars folks!

ART FROM THE HEART, Spring Craft Fair on April 16, 10 am - 4 pm at the Driftwood Key Clubhouse.

This will be our first fundraiser of the year. We are doing a huge bake sale again just like the one back in November. We already have requests for repeat bakes, like the cranberry chocolate chip cookies or the chocolate covered pretzels our famous Driftwood Key Dottie Sunde made for us.

If you are interested in donating or would like to see some-thing specific, email Angi Jensen at [email protected] so she can pass the info on.

One thing I know for sure is that there will be more GLUTEN FREE cookies and such. Depending how Bueller’s Chocolate Espresso Dacquoise goes for the Valentine Dessert Dash it might show up at this event as well.

Our next meeting is March 23, 2016 at 2 pm at the Driftwood Key Club house. Come join us! Guests are always welcome.

Learn what projects we have going for 2016 up at the Cem-etery - (cool stuff, I promise).

GHCC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2016

Each year the Greater Hansville Community Center awards several Post High School Education Scholar-ships to residents of our community. Scholarships are

awarded in May to high school seniors entering college in Fall 2016, to current college students who are continuing their undergraduate education, or to individuals who need finan-cial assistance for training in an accredited program to prepare themselves for improved employment opportunities. In order to be considered for a scholarship, applicants must reside in the Greater Hansville Area, which means they reside in the area bounded on the South by the Delaney/Little Boston Road. Of course, there are many other important criteria considered in evaluation of applications, but this one is a must.

Further information about the GHCC Scholarship Program is available online at www.hansville.org. Applications will be ac-cepted only if they are mailed to GHCC, P.O. Box 133, Hansville, WA. 98340 and post-marked by May 1, 2016. For more infor-mation, contact the GHCC Scholarship Committee by sending email to [email protected]

NEEDED: DRY SPACE FOR THE RUMMAGE SALE STORAGE

Our storage area at the Norwegian Point Park Boathouse has sustained a lot of damage during the last few wind-storms. In order to have the quality of items at the Rum-

mage Sale we need a large DRY space to store them. Is there anyone out there who has some room in a storage area for the Greater Hansville Community Center to store our donations? Please Call Connie Gordon, GHCC President at 360-271-6166 if you can help us out with this issue.

OH WHAT A HOOT!By Chuck Strahm

The annual GHCC Pinewood Derby has come and gone, but what fun it was. With 29 cars entered, the competi-tion was fierce. Even with our digital seeing eyes at the

finish line there were a couple races that were ties. Of course there always has to be a glitch at any event and someone (Me) reversed two of the seeing eyes on lanes one and two. It took a while to figure it out, but in the end all was well.

The Bling class had an all marine theme this year with a whale racing a Washington State Ferry. Naturally the ferry won. The GHCC Pinewood derby is open to all ages and is great family fun! Don’t miss it next year.

Here is how the racers finished:

All in all a great time was had by all. A special thanks to all the volunteers who make this happen every year.

47th ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE AUGUST 13 & 14, 2016

You have read this all before! There will be a Rummage Sale Drop Off on Saturday March 12 from 10 am to 1 pm and I hope you have been filling boxes with wonderful

items for the sorters to put in our storage bins to be reopened in August. We are looking for a “co-department head” for the Garden and Pets Department, so if you are interested in get-ting involved here is your chance. It is a great way to spend a Saturday morning with lots of fun and friendly people.

I would like to remind you that we do not take tires or tire chains, or skis. With the bad weather in the rear view mirror, snow chains do not sell in August! We do accept books of all sizes. It seems to us that no one in Hansville cooks any lon-ger, since the size of our cookbook collection just seems to increase with each book sale. Keep them coming!

Connie Gordon, GHCC President is also the Co-Administrator of the Rummage Sale this year, so if you have questions re-garding pick-ups or dropping things off before the regular drop off please call her at 271-6166.

HANSVILLE GREENWAY UPDATE

Spring is just around the corner and hopefully with drier and sunnier weather. After a very wet January the Greenway trails are holding up well with just a

few wet places thanks to the installation of geoblocks on the famous “slippery slope” between trail markers 15 and 16 last Summer. Another 70’ of geoblocks was installed in February on the Bear Meadow trail. Some clogged cul-

verts were cleaned out helping to drain water from the trails. Thanks to all the stewards and volunteers for their time and effort.

We have noticed an increase in hikers taking along their dogs without a leash. Dogs must be kept on a leash in the Greenway as it is a mandatory Kitsap County Parks Dept. rule. Dogs can be harmful to the wildlife in the sanctuary just by barking and chasing after them as well as making other hik-ers nervous and kids scared. So please, keep your dogs controlled on a leash when hiking through the Hansville Greenway. We have also seen an increase of thrown away garbage such as bottles, cans, bags and even full mutt mitts left on the trails. Remember, if you bring it in, take it back out with you!

Work continues at Norwegian Point Park. The old creosote covered logs along the West property line have been removed and replaced with a new pole fence. A group of Navy personnel from the USS Nimitz helped cleanup the area by the new fence, spreading gravel and pulling out some unwanted and invasive plants by the beach near the gazebo. A few hours of their work helped a lot to improve the looks of the park. Plans are now under way to re-move the old rotten wooden deck against the boat house and the old build-ing addition that blew down during a winter wind storm.

If you would like to be a volunteer for the Hansville Greenway or Norwegian Point Park you can contract us at www.hansvillegreenway.org, or visit us on facebook. The next meeting will be 7:00 pm on April 7 at the Greater Hans-ville Community Center. Come and join in on the fun!

A MESSAGE FROM THE GHCC PRESIDENTChristy is our VP of Membership and she records membership form infor-mation from the forms, sends out reminders, and answers any member-ship questions. Lindsey, our treasurer handles all checks, statements, and of course all accounting details, etc. And that’s just one finger of the many hands that help keep the Community Center functioning.

It’s truly amazing to me how smoothly this organization works with the mul-tiple layers of volunteer people so dedicated to making this community the great place it is! Really - isn’t it amazing!

EGLON NEWS

The Easter Bunny is coming to Eglon! Grab your Easter baskets and join us at the Schoolhouse on Saturday, March 26 at 10

am. We’ve got a wonderful morning planned with eggs to hunt, prizes, snacks and lots of time to enjoy the other children in our won-derful neighborhood. Remember to dress for the weather as the Easter Bunny always hides the eggs outside. If you have holiday snacks to share, we’d love to include them with the punch and coffee to round out the festivities.

Our next meeting will be held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, March 30 at the Schoolhouse. This is an important meeting to attend as we will be electing our new Board of Officers and setting the yearly schedule. If you have ideas for new events, suggestions or concerns, this would be the perfect time to show up, speak up and get involved.

We hope that you already have your calendar marked for the Spring Sale coming up on Sat-urday, May 7 from 9 am to 2 pm. Contacts for this event are Bonnie Bryant Hedman (360-535-4583) and Jackie Holbrook (360-638-1949).

Person(s) of the Year 2015By Connie Gordon

Person of the Year this year is special. The Community Center Board felt we had two very deserving people, so we selected

two. They are Judy Davis and Susan Grey.

Judy has been a behind the scenes, right hand helper for many years. The Rummage Sale and Neighbors Lunch are just a couple places that have benefited from Judy’s quiet dedication to her community.

Susan was our immediate past editor of The Log. Using her professional talents, she made each edition shine. Assembling The Log is a big job and she did it for a number of years, all the while working her two regular jobs! A special thank you to two very deserving women!

THE UNSUNG INDIAN PLUM (Oemleira cersiformis)By Roland Malan, Buck Lake Native Plant Garden

Don’t faint, but signs of spring are already here. In addition to some of the bulb plants that are out of the ground, the Indian Plum (Oemleira cerasiformis) or (osoberry) is budding in a hurry. It is often the first deciduous native shrub to flower in the late winter. It sends a message that the Garden will soon be active. Which means that it’s time to alert the volunteers that

it will soon be time to gather around and keep the garden pristine. Here is the summer calendar:

Buck Lake Native Garden Work Party Schedule for 2016

Note: September 10 is the date scheduled for the Volunteer Appreciation Pot Luck Dinner

Now back to Indian Plum. Research says that this plant is a small, very low shrub, with flowers in very dense racemes with a few white flowers in each raceme. Our experience with Indian Plum is that it also can be grown as tree. Indian Plum is an important early season nectar source for hummingbirds, moths and butterflies, native bees and other pollinator species. Moreover, various small mammals, as well as foxes, coyotes, deer, bears and many bird species consume the “plums” and disperse the seed. It is also used by humans in restoration projects because of its ease of propagation, rapid growth and wide tolerances various for shade and moisture regimes and its roots resist erosion.

Pojar describes the plant as having a greenish-white flower with male and female flowers on separate plants. He also goes to the trouble of telling us that the flowers have an unusual fragrance – something between watermelon rind and cat urine, not some-thing we all need to know, but interesting. The plant’s berries are food for birds and in the past served as part of the diet of many of the Salish peoples; eaten fresh with lots of oolichan grease. Also, twigs were chewed and applied to sore places. The Saanich made bark teas as a purgative and tonic. Our display of Indian Plums is planted on the back ridge of the west side of the teaching circle. They should be in bloom in mid-March. (Please don’t take the berries or bark.)

NOT JUST FOR ANGLERS!

While fishing in our our home waters has been inconsistent (Perhaps downright frustrating for some), salmon size and

numbers have been very strong on the Columbia River. Taking advantage of that opportunity will be the focus of the next meeting of the North Kit-sap Puget Sound Anglers.

On March 9 at 6 pm, we will enjoy another phenomenal meal concocted by Chef Rick and Crew. Somehow, they just keep getting better! We meet at the newly renovated Driftwood Key Clubhouse.

Family Storytime: March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, 10:30-11 am. Early literacy learning fun! Lots of full body movement, songs, stories, and rhymes designed to build letter knowledge, vocabulary, and narrative skills.

Little Boston Book Group: March 2, 1-2 pm. “The Black Count: glory, revolution, betrayal, and the real Count of Monte Cristo” by Tom Reiss. Note new time.

Crafternoon: March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 2:30 - 3:30 pm. Bring your craft projects or try one of ours. Discover our extensive craft book collection and find inspira-tion for your next project. All skill levels and interests are welcome.

Why We Watch Birds: March 12, 11:30 am-12:30 pm. One in five Americans is a bird watcher. What is it that attracts so many to this popular pastime? Gene Bullock of the Kitsap Audubon Society will share fabulous photos and fun facts and stories about birds that just might provide the answer.

FRIENDS OF POINT NO POINT LIGHTHOUSE

By Susan Fowler

Boat traffic traveling into Puget Sound from the Strait of Juan de Fuca first passes through Admiralty Inlet, a body

of water that came to be marked by three lightstations. First was Admiralty Head Light-station on Whidbey Island, then Point Wilson lightstation in Port Townsend and last, Point No Point lightstation marking the entrance into Puget Sound.

In the “List of Beacons, Buoys, Towers & other Day Marks in the 13th Lighthouse District” of1880 detailed navigational information was noted such as light flash sequences, compassbearings and “distances of prominent objects from the aid”. These distances were based onvessels entering from the Strait of Juan de Fuca and show Point No Point as 16 nautical miles from Admiralty Head lightstation, 4 nau-tical miles from Skatchet Head at the south-ern tip of Whidbey Island and 15 ½ miles from West Point lighthouse near Shilshole Bay. It noted Point No Point lighthouse using a fifth order Fresnel lense (changed to a larger fourth order lense by the early 1900’s, the same order as its sister lightstations).

Today Point No Point lighthouse, now fully au-tomated, continues to welcome watercraft of all sizes into Puget Sound and stands as the oldest lighthouse on Puget Sound, an histori-cal treasure and a welcoming sight to many returning mariners.
