Less risk, more profit in close system technology shrimp farming

    G.M. Mujibur Rahman

More than one third of the total internal fish production is produced in the coastal

districts of Bangladesh. The coastal region is the huge store of fish-resource. In this area,

there is a diversified natural fish resource, on the other hand, a confined area where ahuge quantity of fish is cultivated. Shrimp is one of the largest money-earning resources

of Bangladesh. Known as white gold, Bagda shrimp is produced in the coastal areas such

as Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat and Coxs Bazar district. Government has been able toearn corers of foreign currency by exporting shrimp. Our country earned as much as 2744

thousand corers of foreign currency by exporting 50368 metric ton shrimps during 2008-

09 fiscal year. It was produced totally in the coastal areas. But this statistics of production

is not satisfactory to our expectation. This is because; in our country a system of plannedfarming of Bagda shrimp has not yet been developed. If this farming is managed

following a planned process, constructing proper infrastructure, using organic technology

through environment-friendly ways, then, on one side the production will increase, on theother, it will help us keeping our environment balanced.

In terms of planned cultivation, if we compare us with other countries of the world, weare far away from them. Main cause of this is that we follow our forefathers- that is, the

traditional ways of farming. For this, per decimal production is still here below 1 kg.

While, on the other hand, this production in China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia is

more than 15 kg. But the encouraging thing is that there are some progressive farmers

who are getting 20 kg shrimp per decimal pond following close system technology. Sincelast 2009, through PRICE Project of WorldFish Center funded by USAID, in Satkhira

region more than 5000 farmers are being benefited by following close system technology, some farmers are being benefited through following modified traditional technology by

releasing 20-30 days nursed post larvae in main Gher and applying feed three times a

day. 15 Extension Facilitators of the project discussed various aspects with the farmersincluding Gher-visiting, counseling, virus-free post larvae supply, Gher preparation,

nursing etc. The project activities are going on this year through 115 groups in 12 villages

of four Upazillas at Satkhira namely Shyamnagar, Debhata, Ashashuni and KaliganjUpazilla. In this phase, a group of 25 people selected some model farmers, aiming to get

out the farmers from less-production. Farmers of these groups have been able to bring

change within their capability in the way of farming and produce relatively more.Farmers of these groups have increased nursing, used virus-free post larvae, come outfrom the trend of stocking excessive post larvae in the ghers, managed the process

properly and used growth-promoter. Thus they have gotten good result.

After this program has been initiated, there is a change among the farmers seen in this

area. Farmers have been interested to use this method. It may be hoped that a major part

of these areas will use this method instead of traditional method in near future.

a beautiful happy life, for this everybody pursuits money. There is no objection ifanybody tries to earn money as long as there is honesty and sincerity. Asset which is not

earned honestly cannot bring welfare to a nation. Asset which is earned spoiling others

interests and cheating people cannot be beneficial. Rather, it increases pain to people and

there remains risk of life being spoiled. We have to remember that we have the right toearn money and lead our life. Opening new horizon of income-generation, anybody can

try to lead a peaceful life. But only for earning money, nothing can be done which may

bring sufferings to others life. In no way should be earned money which is illegal. Illegalmeans of earning can never be favorable to public interest. Rather, opposite name of

anything similar to unfair means is called dishonesty and immoral act. Immoral acts sow

the seeds of destruction in our social life. Being free from all sorts of dishonesties, illegalities, those who try to succeed in life are honored and worshipped in our society.

Today we are going to discuss on such a man who is not much known face in our society

but trying to construct his life on his own accord. Name of the village is East-Parulia; a

small village under Parulia Union of Debhata Upazilla in the district of Satkhira.Biswajeet Mondol a poor farmer of this village. He along with his brother ploughs a piece

of land which is of 6 bighas. Among these six bigha land, two bigha is taken lease fromothers. Younger brother Sanjoy Mondol is an associated fish-farmer of PRICE Project

financed by USAID. Since 2010, after having training on environment-friendly shrimp

farming, he has been farming shrimp along with white fish and paddy in the same gherand made a good profit. Elder brother Bishwajeet himself with his own accord cultivated

papaya, bean, edible bulbous, on the dikes of the Gher. These two brothers do not need to

go to buy vegetables now and fish from market. Rather, they can sell vegetables aftermeeting their own needs. At this, they are getting benefited economically. Three boys and

girls of these two brothers have been going to school regularly. They have saved some

money to purchase land too. Uttam Chakkrabarti, Extension Facilitator of Bhai Bhai Fishtraders under PRICE Project of WorldFish, has worked earnestly in this regard; and withhis initiative, number of this type of follower-farmers will increase in future.

Helpless Bishwajeet family has been trying to establish their life with honesty andsincerity. They have shown others that it is possible to earn more money by cultivating

fish and vegetables in the same land, side by side they have been able to get succeeded in

their own life which has been worth following in the locality.

    Debhata Correspondent:

WorldFish Centers South Asian Head Mike Philip with a top-level delegate team visited

two villages (Nangla and Hadipore) of Satkhira Sadar and Debhata yesterday of CSISA

and PRICE Project. During this visit, Mike listened to different problems regardingshrimp farming from beneficiary shrimp farmers and said about the success of Acheh of

Indonesia and Kerala of India. Farmers informed that this year many had lost their capital

as the harvest had not been satisfactory due to virus and bacteria. To compensate this

loss, they stocked different types of white fish such as Parsia, Tilapia, Rui, Katla, Mrigeletc. Though the loss of Bagda is not fulfilled from the cultivation of white fish,

something is better than nothing; with this belief, they have stocked some Bagda and

Golda with white fish. They hope if some thing good happens. The delegate team urgedthe affected farmers to form cooperative society and work together regarding; Gher

preparation, drying gher, removing black soil, supplying water, stocking PCR screened

post larvae after a 20-25 days nursing, reducing the tendency of stocking more postlarvae than necessary, removing weeds, etc. At this, it is expected that, virus attack will

get lessened. With the delegate team, Dr. Manjurul Karim, Binoy Barman, Mokarram

Hossain, Sattya Narayan, Melody Braun, Robi Kumar and Nur Aihan were present.

Financed by USAID, the project is being implemented among more than twenty thousandfarmers by 37 depots in three districts of the southwest region namely Satkhira, Khulna

and Bagerhat through 57 Extension Facilitators since 2009.

Change your fate through close system technology Shrimp Farming

More than one third of the total internal fish production is produced in the coastal

districts of Bangladesh. The coastal region is the huge store of fish-resource. In this area, there is a diversified natural fish resource, on the other hand, a confined area where a

huge quantity of fish is cultivated. Shrimp is one of the largest money-earning resources

of Bangladesh. Known as white gold, Bagda shrimp is produced in the coastal areas suchas Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat and Coxs Bazar district. Government has been able to

earn corers of foreign currency by exporting shrimp. Our country earned as much as 2744

thousand corers of foreign currency by exporting 50368 metric ton shrimps during 2008-

09 fiscal year. It was produced totally in the coastal areas. But this statistics of productionis not satisfactory to our expectation. This is because; in our country a system of planned

farming of Bagda shrimp has not yet been developed. If this farming is managed

following a planned process, constructing proper infrastructure, using organic technologythrough environment-friendly ways, then, on one side the production will increase, on the

other, it will help us keeping our environment balanced.

In terms of planned cultivation, if we compare us with other countries of the world, we

are far away from them. Main cause of this is that we follow our forefathers- that is, the

traditional ways of farming. For this, per decimal production is still here below 1 kg.

While, on the other hand, this production in China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia ismore than 15 kg. But the encouraging thing is that there are some progressive farmers

who are getting 20 kg shrimp per decimal pond following close system technology. Since

last 2009, through PRICE Project of WorldFish Center funded by USAID, in Satkhiraregion more than 5000 farmers are being benefited by following close system technology,

some farmers are being benefited through following modified traditional technology by

releasing 20-30 days nursed post larvae in main Gher and applying feed three times aday. 15 Extension Facilitators of the project discussed various aspects with the farmers

including Gher-visiting, counseling, virus-free post larvae supply, Gher preparation,

nursing etc. The project activities are going on this year through 115 groups in 12 villagesof four Upazillas at Satkhira namely Shyamnagar, Debhata, Ashashuni and Kaliganj

Upazilla. In this phase, a group of 25 people selected some model farmers, aiming to get

out the farmers from less-production. Farmers of these groups have been able to bring

change within their capability in the way of farming and produce relatively more.Farmers of these groups have increased nursing, used virus-free post larvae, come out

from the trend of stocking excessive post larvae in the ghers, managed the processproperly and used growth-promoter. Thus they have gotten good result.

After this program has been initiated, there is a change among the farmers seen in this

area. Farmers have been interested to use this method. It may be hoped that a major part

of these areas will use this method instead of traditional method in near future.

Md. Ilias Morol is an inhabitant of the village Kashimnagar under Kopilmuni Union ofPaikgaccha Upazilla in the district of Satkhira which is located in the southwest region of

Bangladesh. His father Ibrahim Morol could not produce shrimp expectedly following

traditional ways ever. Day by day condition was getting worsened. At this time he cameto know about modern method of shrimp farming. Environment friendly and planned

farming technology is being provided namely Ghers Initiative was originally a project

of World Fish Center under PRICE project financed by USAID. Mr. Ibrahim as well as

many farmers of his locality got interested in this training program. They took part in thetraining on eight subjects and came to know many things which they had not known

before. They have able to produce shrimp expectedly in this current year 2011 through

following MTT method after receiving this training and his fate has been changed. Likehim, many a farmers have been able to produce shrimp and got expected production. At

present everybody is pleased for participating training under this project and invite all

other shrimp farmers to follow modern shrimp farming technology instead of traditional

    farming practices.

    Special Correspondent:

Yesterday Nur Aihan, a student of Aquaculture, Belgium University, came to visit the

integrated Gher of Mr. Shanjeet Mondol, a villager of Uttar Parulia under Debhata. Mr.

Kudrat-E-Kabir, Project Manager of GHERS Initiative, Khulna region under PRICEProject of World Fish Center, was with hir.

Nur Aihan got fascinated after he had seen different types of vegetables-namely, gourd,Papaya, Dhundol grown on the dikes of the Gher. Shanjeet Mondol, along with a group

of 25 people, has been getting profit since 2010 with the project help from Extension

Facilitator Uttam Chakkrabwarti. It is his elder brother Biswajeet who was basically theinitiator of this integrated farming. Both these brothers have become an ideal whompeople have been following in their locality. After fulfilling their daily needs, they have

been selling the residues in the nearby market and getting profit. When he was asked how

he did grow both Galda, Bagda, white fish and vegetables together, he said, At thebeginning of the year when salinity is at its pick, I grow only Bagda; when rain starts and

salinity is reduced in the field, I stock Galda along with other white fishes. It is not very

difficult because we have bored tube well in our Gher to reduce salinity with fresh water.Through this way of cultivation, he has been benefited for the last two years. With thefinancial assistance from USAID the project is being implemented in three districts-

Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat through 37 shrimp depots and more than twenty thousand

Handsome earning through planned shrimp farming; Women are backward no more

FNS (GM Mujibur Rahman, Ashashuni, Satkhira):

In our country fish farming starts without any training. Initially, fish-farmers were producing fish

sharing each others knowledge. At that stage, they did not need to go to a hatchery to collect fish fry

or post laevae; even, people, actually, did not have any idea about fish fry or post larvae. When

farmers started to fill their Ghers with water from river, automatically, post larvae and fish fry got

into ghers. At this process, with galda and bagda, some other fishes like Vetki, parshey entered in to

their ghers. Keeping these fishes in their ghers, they reared them almost naturally, and in seasons,

they used to sell these fishes. Years after years, through this process, they have become experienced,

facing different sort of adverse conditions. Fisheries Department, by sharing their research knowledge

and experience with the farmers, has made them skilled. Many countries around the world, following

advanced modern technology in fish farming, especially in Golda and Bagda cultivation, have been

able to have bumper production. In that case, we have lagged behind. For this reason, quantity of our

production is relatively less than other countries. On the other hand, different diseases attack our

vegetable gardens and fish-ghers more than they do to other countries. It happens, because, from

beginning to end, the steps taken for nursing are insufficient. Government and its fisheries department

have taken various steps for getting out of this problem. Many NGOs have been working on this issue

at grassroots level too. Such an organization named WorldFish Center has been working in Satkhira

region. Directed by the financial assistance of USAID through PRICE Project, WorldFish Center has

an activity called GHERS Initiative which is providing training on environment-friendly shrimp

farming to more than twenty thousand farmers through 57 Extension Facilitators and 37 Depots in 3

districts of Southwest region. In the meantime, since 2009, farmers are getting good result of this

training at the field level. With the knowledge earned from the training, now they are trying to

develop their ghers and produce more shrimps. At present, many of the farmers remove black-soil

from their ghers; apply 1kg lime per decimal land, stock PCR screened post larvae. Many of the

farmers get more production through MTT method than they did before through their previous

traditional technology. Not only that, men and women are now sharing their knowledge and solving

problems related to shrimp farming with their experience. If they fail to solve any problem with their

own knowledge they inform it to the Extension Facilitator; if he fails, then they inform it to the

technical expert. In this way, farmers are becoming rich in knowledge and some have become expert

in this field. Some of these farmers have started Pharmacy in their area for selling different

medicines- such as, medicines related to water quality and soil, lack of Oxygen, tablet for removing

odor due to Hydrogen sulfide and Ammonia, removing dirt-cover from shrimps body etc. Though,

the main problem of Shrimp farms is due to the weed of black soil and shallow watery weed in our

country and freeing limitless unscreened post larvae in these gher, many trained farmers have been

able to harvest well, raising the depth of ghers side canals, removing clays from the bottom as much

as possible, reducing the quantity of watery weeds (keeping one-fourth weeds is good), nursing post

larvae at least 15-20 days with feeding, using lime in seasons. Specially, small ghers like small cluster

villages of which area is between 2-4 bighas of land are doing better. Somewhere husband only, somewhere both husband and wife look after these ghers. For this, they have become solvent and are

sending their children to schools. They are listening to their childrens little demands and fulfilling

them. As they are uneducated, they have urged this program to continue at least fore two or three

years as it is a kind of learning through doing. Thus, the small farmers underneath the modern shed

are becoming able to get succeeded in shrimp farming, extending their working area. Seeing them,

many owners of big ghers have started to think. Side by side with the Fisheries Department, activityof WorldFish center of PRICE Project is playing more advanced and real role for extending our fish

farming with the touch of Modern technology.

    Paikgaccha Correspondent:

GHERS Initiative implemented by the WorldFish Center with the financial support of

USAID under PRICE Project has been providing training to shrimp farmers on planned

and environment-friendly shrimp farming management from the beginning of 2011among the small farmers of Godipur, Boyerjhapa, Charbandha villages under Paikgaccha

    Upazilla.

Farmers inform that the activity of this project is important which is advocating an

advanced way of farming shrimp, instead of the existing old way. We are trained ondifferent eight aspects including stocking environment-friendly post larvae for bumperproduction, gher management, disease management, harvesting etc. After this training,

we are getting benefited from the planned way, using proper doses of lime, feed etc. It is

relatively better than they did get previously farmers informed. At the end, 480 farmersof four groups who had been trained thanked all authorities and officers related to this

    activity.

Handsome earning through planned shrimp farming; Women are backward no more

    GM Mujibur Rahman

In our country fish farming starts without any training. Initially, fish-farmers were producing fishsharing each others knowledge.

Keeping these fishes in their ghers, they reared them almost naturally, and in seasons, they used to sell these fishes.

For this reason, quantity of ourproduction is relatively less than other countries.

Many of the

farmers get more production through MTT method than they did before through their previoustraditional technology.

Fish and vegetable cultivation in the same land; A new horizon of income generation

    Ashashuni (Satkhira) Upazilla Correspondent:

Extreme hard is our way of life; to adjust this extremity with our life is a primordial

process. Somebody is getting succeeded; somebody is, into a rude reality, gettingsomersaulted. Nobody knows how, what is in your hand today will go tomorrow to

another hand. There will be no way to keep that; this is reality. Each and everybody want

a beautiful happy life, for this everybody pursuits money. There is no objection if

anybody tries to earn money as long as there is honesty and sincerity. Asset which is notearned honestly cannot bring welfare to a nation. Asset which is earned spoiling others

interests and cheating people cannot be beneficial. Rather, it increases pain to people and

there remains risk of life being spoiled. We have to remember that we have the right toearn money and lead our life. Opening new horizon of income-generation, anybody can

try to lead a peaceful life. But only for earning money, nothing can be done which maybring sufferings to others life.

Name of the village is East-Parulia; asmall village under Parulia Union of Debhata Upazilla in the district of Satkhira.

Biswajeet Mondol a poor farmer of this village.

Rather, they can sell vegetables after

meeting their own needs. At this, they are getting benefited economically. Three boys andgirls of these two brothers have been going to school regularly. They have saved some

money to purchase land too. Uttam Chakkrabarti, Extension Facilitator of Bhai Bhai Fish

traders under PRICE Project of World Fish, has worked earnestly in this regard; and with

his initiative, number of this type of follower-farmers will increase in future.

Helpless Bishwajeet family has been trying to establish their life with honesty andsincerity. They have shown others that it is possible to earn more money by cultivating

fish and vegetables in the same land, side by side they have been able to get succeeded in

their own life which has been worth following in the locality.

Shrimp farming through CST system is suitable for bringing success

    G M Mujibur Rahman

Bangladesh, in comparison with other countries around the world, is still far backward from planned Goldaand Bagda farming. Main cause of this is tradition; following the way their forefathers did. For this reason,

per decimal production in our country is below one kg. Yet, in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, this

production is more than 10 kg. But the hopeful thing is that some farmers, in our country too, get production

more than 10 kg/ decimal land, following close system technology of cultivation.

Coastal area is a huge store house of fish-resources. One third of the total fish is produced in the coastal

districts of Bangladesh. There is a huge natural fish resource, so is the farmed fish. Shrimp is the largest

money-earning resource in Bangladesh. Known as the white gold, Bagda shrimp is produced in Satkhira,

Khulna, Bagerhat and Coxs Bazar. Through shrimp farming, government of Bangladesh earns crores of

foreign exchange by exporting this produced shrimp. In the fiscal year 2008-2009, our country has earned

2,744 crores of foreign exchange by exporting 50368 mt shrimp of which total has been produced in the

coastal region. But the statistics of our production is not similar to our expectation. Its cause is that plannedshrimp farming management has not been established in our country. Forming proper infrastructure, through

organic technology, if environment-friendly shrimp farming is started, production of our country will increase

on one side, itll be possible to keep environment balanced on the other. In our Satkhira district, PRICE

Project has been working on modern technology of shrimp farming. Here we are going to discuss one of their

    fish-projects.

On 13 September 2011 at 11 am, in association with the project help, 25 beneficiaries of Debhata and

Ashashuni Upazilla visited CST Shrimp Gher of Mahi Fish Culture on the bank of Ishamoti adjacent to

village Nangla of Debhata; it was an activity of GHERS Initiative of WorldFish Center financed by USAID.

At this time, technical expert of this project Md. Azharul Haque along with Extension Facilitators of Debhata

and Satkhira Upazilla were present. Seeing the stocking density and production, present beneficiaries became

surprised. They listened to the ins and outs of this farming strategy to the technical expert attentively.

Through discussion, that the production of 1 bigha CST gher is equal to a 14 bighas of traditional gher wasmade clear to them practically with the evidence of ghers shrimp. In a traditional or conventional gher,

releasing 1000 post-larvae in each season and considering the survivality of its 20%, (in a year 8-10 times and

15000 is its highest in number) in a year highly 40 kg Bagda and 200 kg white fish is produced. If the yearly

lease-money along with (10000/- per bigha) the expense related to lime, fertilizer and some others is

deducted, a farmer earns 35000/- yearly. In a CST gher, in comparison with this, at one time stocking 15000

PCR screened post-larvae (considering 90% of its sustainability) and expending money on feed, medicine,

Blue-net-edge, lease-money, water, post-larvae, labor, total expenditure will reach on 75,000/- in 120 days

(excluding the expense of Oxygen). It the weight of shrimp is 35 gm, total 472kg shrimp will be produced, if

we count per kg at 750/-, the figure comes to 354375/-. Then per bigha profit becomes on each five month

BDT 270000/-. Annually this figure will cross 5000000. Therefore it is clear that 35000 taka comes from a

traditional gher of one bigha, whereas, from a CST gher, this figure is more than 500000/- which is more than

14 times. But, in a CST gher, water depth should be kept more than 3.5 feet. Mr. Lavlu informs, it is notpossible to make profit in this way from any business, except stealing or robbery. He thanked WorldFish

Center for organizing a visit with farmers at his gher and promised that he would give all sorts of help side by

side the consultancy support of WFC.

Successful farmer Mahmudul Haque Lavlu of Debhata has proved that, here farming through CST method too

can bring success. Instead of traditional method of farming shrimp, farming through CST method one can

take himself to the summit of success, at the same time, help the country earn foreign exchange which is not

very difficult. At present, expenditure has been increased in such a way that amidst many adversities,

expected profit is achieved. Therefore we need to add people in CST method where expenditure is less profit

is more. Writer: Journalist and Columnist., [email protected]

season and considering the survivality of its 20%, (in a year 8-10 times and 15000 is

its highest in number) in a year highly 40 kg Bagda and 200 kg white fish isproduced. If the yearly lease-money along with (10000/- per bigha) the expenserelated to lime, fertilizer and some others is deducted, a farmer earns 35000/- yearly.

In a CST gher, in comparison with this, at one time stocking 15000 PCR screened

post-larvae (considering 90% of its sustainability) and expending money on feed, medicine, Blue-net-edge, lease-money, water, post-larvae, labor, total expenditure

will reach on 75,000/- in 120 days (excluding the expense of Oxygen). It the weight

of shrimp is 35 gm, total 472kg shrimp will be produced, if we count per kg at 750/-,the figure comes to 354375/-. Then per bigha profit becomes on each five monthBDT 270000/-. Annually this figure will cross 5000000.

Therefore it is clear that 35000 taka comes from a traditional gher of one bigha, whereas, from a CST gher, this figure is more than 500000/- which is more than 14

times. But, in a CST gher, water depth should be kept more than 3.5 feet. Mr. Lavlu

informs, it is not possible to make profit in this way from any business, exceptstealing or robbery. He thanked WorldFish Center for organizing a visit with farmers

at his gher and promised that he would give all sorts of help side by side the

    consultancy support of WFC.
