•THE CONCEPT

•A shimmering ghost ship docks in the windy harbour of the Scheepvart Museum each night. •This ghostly apparation is, in fact, a projection on two vertical planes of water, perpendicular to each other. The installation is inspired by the trees in early video games: two intersecting planar images create the illusion of a 3D object as the viewer rotates around them.

•GHOST SHIP

•THE VISITOR

EXPERIENCE

•Visitors taking the Water Colours boat tour will see the GHOST SHIP as they pass between the Arcam and the Scheepvart Museum. As they slowly move along, their viewing angle will change and they will have the impression of rotating around a 3-dimensional holographic vessel.•The projected image can be replaced occassionally to mark special events (Christmas, New Year's Eve etc.).

•A FULL-SIZED GHOST SHIP IS HARBOURED NEXT TO THE ARCAM

•ANSWER TO THE BRIEF

•The GHOST SHIP highlights Amsterdam's role as one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age. It is a bright symbol of the metropolis' heritage shown in a contemporary, high-tech manner.•The installation is site-specific, because it is makes use of the defining elements of the location: water, wind and ships. It is also innovative because projectors and water curtains have never been used in this configuration before.

•THE TECHNICAL

PRINCIPLE

•Two static views of a merchant ship (bow and port side) are projected onto high-pressure vertical water curtains.

•Submersible pumps feed water from the bay through into the metal pipes resting on pontoons. The water shoots out vertically, through high-pressure nozzles. The gobo projectors are aimed at the two resulting perpendicular planes, with a margin of error to allow for movement caused by the waves.

•The result will be a shimmering holographic image. When the wind blows, the water curtains are scattered into a spray, thus catching light from both projectors at once. The ship becomes less clear, but it gains more volume, adding to the ghostly impression.

THE FLOATING INSTALLATION IS FULLY DETACHED FROM THE BANKS,APART FROM THE ELECTRIC POWER CABLE
