• 2006

Greenville County passed a 2% hospitality tax – must

be used on tourism related

projects. One of the proposed

projects that would qualify would

be conversion of the abandoned

Swamp Rabbit rail line.

It would become a linear park of Greenville County

Recreation.

• Summer 2006

The GHS Community Relations

Department visited Paris Mountain

State Park for a day long retreat – to relax & refresh – and develop our next community strategy.

Discussion lead to the Swamp Rabbit Trail and the potential opportunities associated with it. Sources: 1996 Surgeon General Report & 2002 Greenville Rec Study.

Direction was given to reach out to County Council & determine who the players were and schedule a meeting of discovery.

• 2002

Greenville County Recreation District study noted

“walking” is the most preferred method of physical

activity identified by Greenville County residents.

However, most of their parks are designed to support

more structured activities, such as team sports. Trail

space is very limited.

County Council of the importance of saving this rail

line and converting it to a multi-use trail. Carlton lead

a Summer of volunteer Saturday’s to remove long

gathering debris before the rail lines and railroad ties

could be removed.

• Today

The GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail is a perfect example of “build it and they will come”; most who did not support it or understand the impact it may have on our greater community have come around. Many areas that are not directly connected are looking for ways to make the connection. Keeping in mind there will always be those who don’t understand the how’s and why’s and will deny the impact it has had on our community and the health benefits associated with it.
