The Giant Sequoia, also known as the Sierra Redwood, is one of the most awesome species ofevergreens found on Earth. It's the largest and tallest tree on Earth, with it's ability to reach height of300 ft and diameter of 30 ft. It's age ranges from 2000-3000 years and is one the oldest species onEarth, only the Bristlecone Pine is older. Although it was once widespread, Giant sequioas now occuronly in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of central California. Since 1890, Giant Sequoias have been

protected n Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks, as well as in smaller individualgroves. The trees are usually found at an elevation of 4900-8200 ft. There is only one species withinthis genus, Sequoiadendron giganteum; it has the same common name as its genus, Giant Sequoia. It's needles are scale-like with short, thick, sharp points. The needles are blue-green in color. It'scones are woody, egg-shaped, extremely hard, and 2-3 inches long. And it's bark is reddish-brown,stringy and very thick. The Giant Sequoia can reach a height of over 300 ft. It's hardy to zone 6. TheGiant Sequoia prefers moist, well-drained soil. It also requires alot of water. It can grow up to 3ft ayear. I live in Nebraska and I have no problem growing these trees. It's just a must to keep themwatered and to make sure their roots don't dry out. If their roots dry out, the tree is dead. Eventhough the cold hardiness of this tree is Zone 6, if planted and raised in the right conditions it can beraised in Zones 3-9.

    Recommended Planting instructions:

Scarification: None required. Stratification: Cold stratify for 30 days. Germination: Sow seed 1/8"deep, tamp soil, keep moist, mulch seed bed, cover seedbed with some shade.

Other: Some recommend a 24 hour pre-soak, then cold stratify for 60 days. You can also submerge inwater for 1-3 weeks. Change water every day or two. Then reportly no stratification is required.
