Inedible Music • I have, for many years, listened

to CBK as literally the only station in Saskatchewan which played half-decent music. However, in my opinion the fare recently has become almost as inedible as that served by other, very mundane stations. Would it be possible to return to

music of the type selected so admir-ably in the past by Mr. S. Blancher, at any rate from 6:30 to 8:00 a.m.?

—Mrs. C.E.J., Regina

Night Music • I enjoy your all-night music

broadcast immensely. The nights of classical and semi-classical music are especially good. Keep up the excellent work.

—M.J.B., Melfort, Sask.

Action from Thought • I keep writing notes of apprecia-

tion in my mind but laziness prevents them getting on paper. However — just to prove that sometimes action does result from thought — thanks for Hermit's Choice (CBC radio, Saturdays). I have heard it twice and found it most entertaining. The greedy TV screen gets most

of a person's attention when he or she has time to watch. Must say though that there is a lot of first-rate stuff available by radio. It can do some things that the flatter — in dimension — TV can't manage.

—CL., Moose Jaw, Sask.

Head and Shoulders • . . . I do want to say how good

it was to see Max in the Morning (CBC-TV) on June 15th at 10:30 p.m. Due to its lateness it would he a good idea to repeat this fine half-hour with Max Ferguson and his very able crew. Max has a wide variety of listeners, from the very old to the young. His success upsets the estab-lished notion that most people have to see or imagine a pie thrown in the face to catch on! We Canadians do not put Max Ferguson in the lime-light enough — we darn well should. He's head and shoulders ( not a com-mercial, you fellas) ahead of most of today's humor-satirists. For our birth-day year we should do something special about showing Max that we like him and need him . . .

—Mrs. V.C.A., Calgary

Annoyed and Disgusted • My family and some of our

friends are thoroughly annoyed and disgusted with the Saturday film, The Singer, Not the Song, on Great Movies (Saturday, June 18th). You call this family entertainment?

The story was obviously written by an atheist, anti-Catholic or bigot. Of all the fine religious movies that have been produced we feel your choice was not only prejudiced but vulgar.

It will be some time before any of us feel inclined to watch Great Movies or any other program on Channel 6 ( CBWT ).

—M.Af ., Winnipeg

Glee Club Makes A Hit • We would like to express our

appreciation of the very fine program put on TV on Monday, May 23rd, by the Tuxedo Park Glee Club (They All Call It Canada but I Call It Home), and how fortunate we were to have seen and heard it. The par-ticipants were excellent and your young master of ceremonies did such a fine job.

Indeed the leaders of the Glee Club are to be congratulated. Keep up the good work. On behalf of some viewers who

were at a summer camp on the French River.

—Mrs. H.M.C., Sudbury, Ont.

Utter Disgust • I have just turned my television

off in utter disgust over the beginning of Cine Club (CBC-TV, Sundays). There is beauty in a horse in flight but how could a film maker show such sordid pictures as a live horse's flesh crawly with flame is beyond belief . . .

Being a person who likes animals, particularly horses, I find it is hard to believe people would be that in-human.

—L.D., Watrous, Sask.

Grade 12 Appreciation • I very much enjoyed the Heri-

tage program entitled William Shake-speare — Theologian with the Very Rev. W. Bothwell as speaker on Sun-day, June 4th, 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. (CBC-TV). . . . I am a grade 12 student who in-

tends to major in Shakespeare . . . —G.A.B., Winnipeg

STUDENTS taking summer courses in several Saskatchewan educational institutions will be able to attend concerts at the lunch hour, arranged by the CBC. At least one concert each is planned at the Regina and Saskatoon campuses of the Uni-versity of Saskatchewan, at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts, Briercrest and at the School Music Methods classes in Fort Qu'Appelle. Portions of each concert, with performers selected from among faculty members where possible, will be broadcast on CBK radio. Watch for further announcements.

TWO CONCERTS this week, presented on the Fort Garry Campus, U. of M., by the CBC in association with the Univer-sity of Manitoba Summer School, are open to the general public, free of charge. On Tuesday, July 12th at 12:30 p.m. in the East Gymnasium, Peter Van Ginkel,

bass baritone, is heard with the CBC Winnipeg Orchestra. In the Residence Auditorium Thurs-day, July 14th at 12:30 p.m., the Hidy Trio ( Marta Hidy, violin, Klara Benjamin, 'cello, and Ches-ter Duncan, piano) will perform. The concerts are the third and fourth in a series of eleven to be presented July 6th-August 4th. Tom Taylor is the CBC producer in charge. Performances are re-corded for future presentation on CBC radio.

THE CANADIAN light music series continues this week on the Winnipeg Pops Concert, Friday, July 15th at 7:30 p.m. with four selections. An overture to As You Like It,

by Clarence Lucas, is the first work on the program. Lucas, born in Niagara, Ont., in 1866, left Canada as a young man after receiving his early musical education in Montreal. He studied in France under such notable composers as Gounod

KODALY AT 83

CBC TUESDAY NIGHT broadcasts a concert in

honor of Zoltan Kodaly, the Hungarian composer,

who is visiting Canada this summer.

HE LOOKS a frail little man, but he is aston-ishingly energetic for someone of 83. He has beautiful, expressive pale blue eyes, white beard and grey hair almost touching his shoul-ders, a face full of humor and compassion, immense dignity, and a slow and choice man-ner of speaking. Zoltan Kodaly is the musical patriarch of Hungary, a legend in his lifetime. Few modern composers have done more for the musical life of their country than he. But he is very shy as well as busy, so it is not often than he can be persuaded to leave home. That's why it will be a great occasion this month when he visits Canada for the first time, to give the MacMillan Lectures at the University of Toronto summer school, and re-ceive an honorary degree. (The lectures will be broadcast later on CBC-FM.)

In honor of Kodaly; a special 90-minute concert of some of his works, with the com-poser present, will be presented early in July at Toronto's MacMillan Theatre. It features 'cellist Janos Starker, violinist Lorand Fenyes, and the Festival Singers of Toronto directed by Elmer Iseler, and will be recorded for in-clusion in CBC Tuesday Night, July 12th, at 10:35. James Daly stars Wednesday, July 13th

at 9:30 p.m. in a dramatization

of a controversial U.S. murder trial

which sent two innocent men to the chair.

NICOLA SACCO was a shoe-maker, Bartolomeo Vanzetti a fishmonger. Both were poor, Italian immigrants to the United States who became the central figures in one of the greatest controversies in the history of American juris-prudence. Sacco, 29, was a philosophical anarchist and Vanzetti a radical agitator. In 1920 they were arrested and charged with shooting the paymaster and guard of a South Braintree, Mass., shoe factory during a payroll rob-bery. One year later they were convicted, after a lengthy trial, and sentenced to death in the electric chair. The trial and the verdict set off a series of protests and demonstrations by liberal groups throughout the country, later spreading to the European countries and elsewhere in the world. For six years the supporters of Sacco and Vanzetti fought a campaign for their release on grounds of want of conclusive evidence, and prejudice of court. All appeals failed and the two were executed at Charlestown, Mass., on Aug-ust 22nd, 1927.

Since then the Sacco-Van-zetti case has never been com-pletely forgotten and is still capable of arousing fierce pas-sions in some quarters. It has been the source for several important books, has been dramatized as a play on Broadway and on television, and is being transformed into an opera by Marc Blitzstein. All of this would have pleased Albert Einstein, who said: "Everything should be done

THE ADVOCATE

to keep alive the tragic affair of Sacco and Vanzetti in the conscience of mankind. They remind us of the fact that even the most perfectly plan-ned democratic institutions are no better than the people whose instruments they are." A few years ago a justice of

the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, Michael A. Mussmano, who was an associate counsel for the defence, wrote: ". . . it was the misfortune of Sacco and Vanzetti to be tried when the law was wrong. Were they tried today, there would be

wie . . . ec Ilic2eafrt WHILE RADIO's Trans-Canada Matinée is off the air for the summer, its hostess, Pat Pat-terson, is being heard in a bright new series, Conversation Piece (Monday to Friday, 2:03 p.m. on CBW and CBK, 2:33 on CBX and CBR), in which she talks informally to an interesting guest or pair of guests each week-day, and intersperses their dialogue with recorded music relating to it, selected by the guest.

. . . flicia4 3i Bella

Some of her conversations present celebri-ties in a new light, or introduce listeners to fascinating people doing vital things who are not widely known to the general public. Fre-quently she encourages them to sound off about subjects they have never before dis-cussed in an interview, things often far re-moved from their profession but about which they feel strongly, and sometimes they become quite emotional and refreshingly outspoken, which makes for stimulating entertainment well ventilated with spontaneous humor. Miss Patterson has a wide range of interests, and an unusually warm and sympathetic person-ality, which enables her to relate to her guests with ease. Production is by Stuart Marwick, who will also be producing Matinée when it returns in the fall. The organizer for both programs is Rosemary Macmillan.

Miss Patterson's guest on Monday, July 11th, will be Gordon Sinclair, Toronto writer, jour-nalist ( for 44 years), TV and radio personality, and a panelist on Front Page Challenge for 10

years. Hardly anyone feels lukewarm about him, and he admits himself that he's "one of the most prejudiced and biased people in Canada, and am not ashamed of it. My motto is: To thine own self be true—I mean more to me than to anyone else." He talks about his youth, about his father, Sandy, a labor organ-izer who was blacklisted by his union, and his mother, Bessie, a salty, hardworking woman who had a great influence on his career. He

The Thrill and Horror of Bullfighting Cine Club shows two films about the

matador and his art, Sunday at 7:00 p.m. on CBC-TV

IN GENERAL, bullfighting splits people into two camps—those who regard it as a disgust-ing spectacle which should not be permitted in a civilized country, and those to whom it is a graceful art embodying the ancient vir-tues of manhood: courage and honor. The first argue that a dumb animal is taunted and slaughtered merely to provide a Roman enter-tainment for people seeking to vicariously assuage a blood lust; the second that it is a noble sport, one man alone against a trained fighting animal, a test of skill and bravery between man and beast. The beast always dies, of course, but dies splendidly rather than being butchered in an abattoir. And some-times the man dies, too. Two short films on CBC-TV's Cine Club

series this week are about bullfighting. From France there is Corrida Interdite, by Denys Colomb de Daunant (whose film Dream of Wild Horses was seen a few weeks ago on the same series), and from the United States the highly praised film by writer Barnaby Conrad, The Day Manolete Was Killed. Manolete was Spain's greatest matador in

the '30s and '40s, and for the last eight years of his life the highest paid bullfighter in the world. A legendary figure, he was ". . . not only the best torero of his day," writes Conrad,

"he was what every Spaniard aspired to be, the gallant, arrogant, courageous Spaniard of pre-Armada days. But audiences, infuriated by perfection, demanded more and more of him with every fight. Then, on a fateful day in August, 1947, in the bull ring of Linares, he kept a terrible rendezvous with a bull named Islero."

Manolete had retired to rest and raise bulls on his ranch when he went back into the ring to meet one more bull. He was 30, badly scarred from many gorings, and exhausted. But the Press had been sniping at him and there was a handsome young matador, Luis Dominguin, who claimed he was better and that Manolete was afraid to compete with him. Islero was a Miura bull, one of a savage breed that had killed more of Spain's famous toreros than any other, yet he was not a particularly good bull, says Conrad—"He was inclined to crowd to the right and he hooked badly." Manolete made passes at Islero no other mata-dor would have attempted. He gave the crowd exactly what it had paid to see—the greatest performance of his life. Conrad tells the story of that last fight

through still pictures taken in the ring and the infirmary.

conduct the Hamilton Philhar-monic Society. He left again in 1893, and died in 1947 in Paris.

Reverie, Opus 2, the second selection, is by Guillaume Cou-ture. Born in Montreal in 1851, like Lucas he pursued studies in France with noted composers — Saint-Saëns and Cesar Franck. Later, in Montreal, he conducted the Montreal Philharmonic So-ciety, the Societes des Syn-phonistes and the Montreal Ama-teur Operatic Club.

Dr. Claude Champagne, who died in December of last year, is represented by his composi-tion Paysanna. Born in Montreal in 1891, he became one of the country's most distinguished composers, with enormous influ-ence on a whole generation of his colleagues. Paysanna, an in-tensely patriotic piece, contains fragments of 0 Canada, God Save the Queen and La Marsel-laise, woven together.

Two dances by Lome Betts conclude this week's program. Betts, born in Winnipeg in 1918, received his musical education there and in Toronto, where he studied with John Weinzweig. For a number of years he has lived in Hamilton, where he is a staff member of the Hamilton Conservatory of Music.

Bill Walker takes advice from Don Maybee and Bob Trodd, two of the snooker experts competing on CBC-TV's Saturday afternoon Championship Series.

Country Calendar

Recently a new wheat deal has been signed with the Soviet Union. The total sale, the equivalent of 336 million bushels of wheat and flour, is the largest single wheat transaction in the history of inter-national trade. The great wheat sale shows that once again agricul-ture is the mainstay of the Cana-dian economy. This point is amply demonstrated in this half-hour pro-gram. Produced by Dick Boclting.

20/20

Diary of a Mountain Pilot. A film story which shows how Bud .Tillotson, chief instructor fo r Okanagan Helicopters, trains a student pilot to cope with the peculiarities of mountain flying. The company operates the only school in the world where pilots are taught the specialized tech-niques required in high country.

How to Fly a Helicopter CANADA HAS the only school in the world that teaches the specialized techniques of pilot-ing a helicopter in mountain country. The school, run by Okanagan Helicopters, is located in British Columbia, where the student pilot is given six weeks' basic training at Abbotsford, fol-lowed by further instruction at Penticton in the Okanagan Val-ley, culminating in flights over the high mountains of the Coast Range.

On CBC-TV's 20/20 series this week viewers will see Oka-nagan's chief instructor, Bud Tillotson, taking student pilot Don Broeder through part of his course. Broeder, who operated a crop-spraying business in As-siniboia, Saskatchewan, before

contributions to American culture and miscegenation.

Camera West

A look at Vancouver's West End, an appendage of land that reaches out from the main section of the city toward the north and west shores, and is bounded on the east by beaches, on the north by Stan-ley Park, on the west by Burrard Inlet, the dock area of the harbor, and on the south by downtown Vancouver. One of the oldest sec-tions of the city, it is nevertheless considered' a desirable area in which to live. There is a wide contrast in both architecture and inhabitants. Produced by Mn Soodor. Cameraman is Doug Mc-Kay, film editor is John Fuller and the original music is by Don Thompson.

going to B.C., is already a skilled pilot of fixed-wing -aircraft, one of the requirements for training as a helicopter pilot. Tillotson, a former RCAF pilot who served in the Second World War, has been flying helicopters exclusive-ly for the past 11 years.

The 20/20 film, sub-titled Diary of a Mountain Pilot, shows Tillotson instructing Broeder in take - offs and landings on a small hilltop, a cleared patch of dense valley forest, a narrow rock canyon, and a 12-by-12-foot platform specially constructed on a cliffside. Also shown is the technique of auto-rotation, an emergency measure in which the engine is deliberately cut and the helicopter falls, designed to teach the student what to do in the event of engine failure.

Shows some of the ultra-sophis-ticated alternatives to swatting such as: unbalancing the insects' nutrition; killing them by ultra-sonic or other shock waves; ster-ilizing the males through ionizing radiation or light flashes; drowning the larvae in traps; or interfering with mating and egg-laying by light, color or electricity.

Norman Podhoretz NORMAN PODHORETZ was only 30 when he succeeded the late Eliot Cohen as editor of the magazine Commentary seven years ago. He was then already well known as a literary critic whose work had appeared in most of the leading magazines of the United States, including Commentary. Founded in 1945 by the American Jewish Com-mittee, Commentary is one of America's foremost intellectual journals. Under Podhoretz's stewardship circulation has been rising and the annual deficit de-creasing, two objectives which in publishing today it is becom-ing more and more difficult to achieve.

Chiefly, Commentary is a "lib-eral" magazine, espousing no particular party line and oriented towards social criticism. Al-though Podhoretz has a some-what pessimistic view of Ameri-can letters ( he recently wrote:

. . the number of people in this country who can write an ac-ceptable piece of exposition in literate English is astound-ingly low"), he has nevertheless managed to present his readers with some of the best writing available. Among his contribu-tors are Edmund Wilson, Lionel Trilling, Saul Bellow, Leslie Fiedler, and Bernard Malamud.

This Sunday night on CBC-TV's Compass (July 10th at 10:00 p.m.) Norman Podhoretz will be seen in conversation with Patrick Watson. The producer is Alex Brown; executive producer, Jim Carney.

no doubt of their acquittal. Thus, two men died who, in the light of all the traditions of American fairness, should not have died." The trial itself provided

enough sensation. It was held "in a hostile atmosphere," as Oliver Wendell Holmes later said: the foreman of the jury re-marked, without even having heard a word of testimony, "Damn them, they ought to hang anyway;" the two defend-ants were wheeled into court in a closed cage.

After the conviction, a man whose whole life was the law took up the cause of Sacco and Vanzetti, believing that the law had been betrayed. William G. Thompson, who became the two men's chief defence counsel,

was a corporation lawyer, an officer of the Bar Association, and a highly respected figure in New England. It was he who argued the case before United States Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, speak-ing with such passion and an-guish that Holmes halted him with: "Mr. Thompson, I shall have to ask you to desist be-cause you are persuading me to do what I know I have no right to do." The law has since been changed, so that where Holmes felt there was no case for Federal intervention, today there would be.

In the television play of the Sacco-Vanzetti ease, entitled The Advocate, to be telecast Wednesday, July 13th at 9:30 p.m. on CBC-TV, James Daly stars as the defence attorney, Dino Fazio as Vanzetti and Dolph Sweet as Sacco.

Forest Rangers

It takes all the ingenuity of the junior forest rangers to save the old Hudson Bay fort where they have their headquarters. A lumber company owns the fort site and wants to build a new sluice through it.

Outlook

Ballerina. A film portrait of Margaret Mercier, a girl who has achieved what thousands aspire to but seldom attain. A graduate of Sadler's Wells Ballet, prima balle-rina of Les Grands Ballets Cana-diens, and recently a student of the Bolshoi Ballet, she tells her own story in this film and how she feels about the demands of her art and the dedication and energy that it requires of her. She is shown

rehearsing and during her scarce spare time, relaxing in the park, window shopping, and during a quiet evening at home.

Get Smart Maxwell Smart masquerades as

a chauffeur and agent 99 as a rich femme fatale, to trap a KAOS art dealer who is placing exploding art paintings in foreign consulates.

Friday Night Movies Black Like Me. Starring James

Whitmore, Walther Mason, John Marriot and Clifton James. The true story of John Howard Griffin, a journalist who in order to find what being a Negro in America is really like, darkened his skin with the aid of chemicals so that he could pass as colored. What he discovered when he went to the South changed his whole life, and profoundly altered his ideas, not only about Negroes but about white people.

Ballet: The Only Reality A FILM PORTRAIT of a girl who has achieved what thou-sands aspire to but few ever realize—ballet stardom—will be presented on TV's Outlook on Friday, July 15th. In this film, made by the NFB in 1963, Mar-garet Mercier, a small, slender graduate of Sadler's Wells Bal-let, and former student of the Bolshoi Ballet, who has been a prima ballerina with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and is now prima ballerina with the Hark-ness Ballet Company in New York, tells her story. She de-scribes how she feels about the demands of her art, and the dedi-cation, energy, work and per-sistence it requires. Viewers will follow Miss Mer-

cier through her daily routine— practice in the studio with other dancers, rehearsal of roles under the watchful eye of choreog-rapher Madame Ludmilla Chi-riaeff, founder and director of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and, in the little spare time she

Margaret Mercier

has left, taking a few moments for relaxation — a walk in the

-park, window shopping, and a quiet evening at home.

Miss Mercier is a native Mont-realer who began to study ballet when she was seven. From the first it meant sacrifices — she

Freelance broadcasters Barbara and Lyal Brown visited Ireland earlier this year. This is the result of their inquiries into current de-velopments, primarily in the Re-public of Ireland. Todaeld Aisit People Peailit NATURALLY t h e advertise-ments, posters, and travel sec-tions of newspapers and maga-zines all depict Ireland as a green, misty land of picturesque cottages, pretty colleens, Guin-ness and oysters, horse races and fairs. Naturally. Ireland wouldn't be Ireland without all that. Geographers describe it as "the last outpost of Eurasia against the oceanic depths of the Atlan-tic" and most people like to think of it as the last outpost of charm and romance against a harsh world. What is modern Ireland really

like? Freelance broadcasters Bar-bara and Lyal Brown were in Eire and the Northern Counties earlier this year to prepare a special program on the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rebel-lion. They stayed on to discover more about the people and the country of today. Their Impres-sions of Modern Ireland will be broadcast this week on the radio series Venture '66 ( Sunday, July 10th at 11:03 p.m. ). "To know the Irish people is

to like them," says Lyal Brown, "but don't mistake the North American caricature or the pop-ular image of a professional lep-rechaun for the real thing. The real Irish, a warm, hospitable people, are having difficulties facing up to the hard facts of the future 'while they live with the ghosts of the pase."

Barbara and Lyal Brown's re-port includes interviews with the Rt. Hon. A. B. D. Faulkner, Min-ister of Commerce, Northern Ire-land, and the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the Irish Republic, Sean F. Lemass, both of whom discuss the "two Irelands" and their economic objectives. His-tory was made in Ireland 18 months ago when the political leaders of the South and the North, Lemass and Capt. the Rt. Hon. Terence Marne O'Neill, premier of Ulster, met to discuss

Broadcaster Lyal Brown on the site of the destruction of Nelson's Pillar In

Dublin.

"the possibilities of practical co-operation in matters of mutual interest." It was the first time official representatives of the two governments had met since the Act of 1920 partitioned Ire-land into the 26 counties of the South and the six counties of the North. Lemass talks to Lyal Brown about some of the results of his meeting with Captain O'Neill and about the free trade agreement entered into with Britain when Lemass met with Prime Minister Wilson last De-cember. Canada, too, has an in-terest in Ireland's economic future. The Tynagh lead-zinc mine in County Galway, which Lemass opened last year, is a $12.5 million investment by a Canadian firm.

Impressions of Modern Ireland presents the views of many ordi-nary Irish people about the changing times in their country, the current interests of their young people, what life looks like to the owner of a "singing pub," strong talk on freedom of expression, and the future of the Irish language. The people of Ireland are a

KODALY AT 83 (Continued from page 4)

includes Sonata for Unaccom-panied Cello, Duo for Violin and Cello, and a number of choral works. Production is by James Kent.

During the intermission Pro-fessor Richard Johnston of the faculty of music, University of Toronto, will interview Kodaly. The composer insists that all his wisdom can be reduced to four sentences, but that is one of the most modest understatements of all time, for this brilliant and charming man has helped to re-create Hungary's whole musical language, and his revolutionary theories about educating the young have been widely studied and employed.

"To make serious music more popular, it is necessary to sophis-ticate audiences," he says. "To do this, start when they are chil-dren. Teach them singing first, for free singing without instru-ments is the school of true and deep musicality. It . is better to make musicians before instru-mentalists. . . . We teach the children with hand symbols. It is like the sign language for deaf mutes. Using the movable Doh system — fixed Doh is not logical — they rapidly learn to sing any scale step merely by watching the teacher's hand. It's a game to them. They love it. Later they learn to read the notes. Visiting psychologists have told me that the children in those schools where singing is taught daily learn all their studies more easily. Why not? The voice sits in the body. To sing is to stimu-late the body and, through the emotions, the mind."

Kodaly himself, to please a musical but cautious family, was educated for a non-musical pro-fession at the University of Budapest, but he also studied piano and violin at the Academy of Music, where fellow students were Erno von Dohnanyi and Bela Bartok. In 1906 Kodaly and Bartok went into the Transyl-vania hills with a primitive Edi-son recording machine, tramped

through the villages and farm-lands by day, slept by campfires and in huts at night, and col-lected thousands of authentic folksongs and dances which greatly influenced both of them, though Kodaly's work is less radical and more romantic than Bartok's, and he has a special affinity for choral music. (Cana-dian composer John Beckwith, .in doing research for his recent CBC Tuesday Night documen-tary on Bartok, discovered that the two composers had con-ducted their field research separ-ately, not together, as has gen-erally been supposed.) That same year he joined the faculty of the Academy, and began to make his presence felt as musical jouri nalist, scholar and composer. In 1949 he gave his name to the Budapest Kodaly Choir, a group of 200 specially trained girls of elementary and secondary school age.

His first wife, Emma, one of the great figures in Hungarian musical life, was 20 years his senior. His present beautiful wife, Sarolta, is 56 years his junior. In spite of his saintly, gentle appearance, Kodaly does not suffer fools or bigots gladly. When Hungary was occupied by Germans he boldly disregarded radio interdicts by helping Jews escape the Nazis, then, when ac-cused of this, freely admitted it and refused to stop. Because of his tremendous popularity with his countrymen, reprisals were withheld. He still refuses to mince words under the Com-munist regime. Says an admirer: "He has a way of saying sarcastic things that irritate the officials. But he is their pride. For such a small country to have produced two composers like Bartok and Kodaly is extraordinary and they know it. He does and says ex-actly as he pleases. What can they do? Kodaly is Hungary now." Says Kodaly: "It's very pleasant for an old man to be wanted. I have 30 commissions— more than I could do if I lived to be a hundred. I work very slowly at many things at once. Sometimes an idea comes for one, sometimes for another . . ."

The Killer/ Of Mice and Men / Lease or Love HOW DOES the artist fit into a world full of gloweringly inhu.• man electronics? Where, in fact, is any man's place in the machine age with its modern cities, where humans are becoming increas-ingly like digits in tiny cells stacked skyscrapingly high? French-Roumanian dramatist Eu-gene Ionesco takes a look at this disturbing situation in his play The Killer, an ironic, amusing caricature of the ideal modern city. It's Cohen's Choice for CBC Tuesday Night, July 12th, at 8:05. Nathan Cohen has pre-pared the adaptation, which will be produced by Gerald Newman in Vancouver. The Killer marks the first ap-

pearance of Ionesco's character Bérenger, a kind, conscientious Chaplinesque Everyman who turns up in three of his later plays. The playwright first de-veloped the idea for The Killer in a short story he called La Photo du Colonel. As the play begins, Bérenger is being shown around a radiant city and is loud

in his naïve admiration for all its beauties — everything about it seems perfect, except that there is no happiness there, because each day a mysterious killer has been pushing two or three un-suspecting people into an attrac-tive artificial pond where they meekly oblige by drowning. Ap-parently nobody is concerned enough to track down the killer, who distracts and unbalances all his victims first by showing them the photo of a colonel. But when Bérenger falls in love with a young girl and learns that she is to be the next victim, he decides that something drastic must be done.

Eventually he comes face to face with the killer, a homicidal idiot, and finds himself power-less to resist him. Is the killer death itself, which even the most perfect of cities is incapable of avoiding? Or are we all killers, carrying our own destruction within ourselves? Like many playwrights, Ionesco is bored with being asked to explain the

garian composer, attended the con-cert given in his honor at the Mac-Millan Theatre, University of To-ronto, on July 8th. The all-Kodaly concert was taped for broadcast and featured: 'cellist Janos Starker in Unaccompanied Sonata for Cello; Elmer Iseler directed the Festival Singers of Toronto in Jesus and the Traders, Evening Song and Katalinke. During the intermission Prof. R. Johnson, faculty of music, University of Toronto, interviewed Kodaly. meaning of his plays. When pressed for an explanation, he's likely to reply: "You know Na-bokov? When I asked if his books delivered a message, he said: 'No, I am not a postman'." A play of quite another ilk,

Of Mice and Men, an earthy, allegorical study of itinerant farm hands, and one of the two most famous and sympathetic novels of John Steinbeck, who won the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature, will be presented on Midweek Theatre on Wednesday night, July 13th, at 9:00, in an adaptation by George Jonas. It's a tragic story of the friendship between two of the most lovable characters in fiction, Lennie, the huge, pathetic, lumbering moron, and his protective par tn e r, George. They are migratory farm workers who cherish a secret dream that someday they may save up enough money to buy a small farm, put down roots, and live a peaceful, independent ex-istence in which Lennie can tend the rabbits and never get into trouble. It's a simple little story with no social flag to wave, but its brilliant characterizations and dramatic tension made it an un-forgettable tale, eminently suit-able for a play. There is humor in Steinbeck's

writing. There is cruelty. But it is his tenderness that makes him well remembered, and tempers the bitter, the sweet, and the ridiculous of which he writes. Steinbeck looks like a tough, itinerant farm laborer himself, but he's actually a combination of well-read sophisticate and wide-eyed innocent, easily and quickly moved from wild happi-ness to thunderous rage, highly perceptive, a dreamer in a prac-• tical world—like the characters in his books, a little boy reaching for the moon, and sometimes catching a firefly. Of Mice and Men will be pro-

duced by Rupert Caplan in the (Please turn to page 31)

man, English, and Scottish stock, and in the South, where most of them live, Irish is the first official language, with English recog-nized as a second official lan-guage. For some time there has been something of a language war going on in the island. Out of the less than 3,000,000 people of the Republic, about 1,000 are Irish monoglots. Probably be-tween 25 and 30 per cent of the people speak Irish and English, and about 60 per cent have enough Irish to get by on gen-eral topics. In schools and for employment by the state, Irish is essential. Two years ago a spe-cial commission was set up to report to the Government on the Irish language. The aim of the Fianna Fail ( government) party is bilingualism. Public opinion surveys have shown that about 80 per cent of the people favor restoration of the Irish language.

Impressions of Modern Ire-land is produced by Howard Engel. Executive producer of

Venture '66 is Harry J. Boyle. Next week this series will pre-sent the first of a two-part pro-gram on The Group of Seven, Canada's most famous body of landscape painters.

The ballet, she says, is drawn

When the Messiah Comes. Ori-ginally broadcast on April 21st, 1966. "When the Messiah comes, that will be the day when Jews and Christians get together" — an old Yiddish saying. What do Jews, in-cluding many prosperous, well-edu-cated, apparently integrated young men and women feel about their place in Canadian society? Written by Earl Berger. Produced by Moses Znaimer.

CONVERSATION PIECE (Continued from page 6)

takes a few pokes at such things as church wealth, anonymous critics, and dispels a few myths about himself, including the one that he really didn't visit all those exotic foreign places he used to write about.

Tuesday's guests ( July 12th) will be Peter Franklin White, a star with England's Royal Ballet, and director of the new Ballet British Columbia, which will tour B.C. in the fall; Beth Lock-hart, a former dancer, now a ballet teacher, who helped or-ganize the Ballet British Colum-bia; and Ludmilla Chiriaeff, founder, director and choreog-rapher of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, in Montreal. Miss Chiriaeff was interviewed in a storage room at her ballet head-quarters, among costumes three tiers high, because it was found that the rehearsal rooms were too noisy for an interview. "She's

an elegant woman," says Mar-wick, "and it seemed so incon-gruous to see her and Pat and me sitting on upended soft-drink cases, surrounded by clouds of tulle, using an old butter-tart cup for an ash tray!" The guest on Wednesday, July

13th, is Barry Morse, the well-known Canadian stage, TV, film and radio actor, and director of the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake. He talks about how an actor identifies with a role and the affect of this on someone such as Lorne Greene of Bon-anza. He tells Miss Patterson about the letters he gets from all sorts of people, asking for solu-tions to the most personal prob-lems, and the great responsibility of the "hack columnist who can foul up the lives of his corre-spondents by treating their prob-lems too blithely." He discusses the Shaw Festival and recalls an incident involving Shaw at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where Morse studied.

3:03 p.m.—Afternoon Concert (CBW only)

Recorded orchestral music pre-pared and presented by Norm Micklewright.

The Bath Festival Orchestra con-ducted by Michael Tippett: Fantasia Concertante on a theme of Corelli Tippett The Boston Symphony Orches-

tra conducted by Erich Leinsdorf: Symphony No. 3 (Eroica), third movement _____Beethoven

flutist Nicholas Fiore; oboist Perry Bauman; clarinetist Stan McCart-ney; bassoonist Nicholas Kilburn; and French hornist Eugene Rittich: Sextet, op. 71 (arranged for flute) _Beethoven

gan of St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal:

Chaconne in G minor, Allemande in G minor, Sarabande in Cannon and Carillon in F major __Louis Couperin

Suite de Premier Ton: Grand plein Jeu, Fugue, Duo, Trio, Basset dessus de trompete, Recite de cromorne et de cornet separe, and Dialogue sur les grands jeux Clerambault

9:00 p.m.—Summer Concert— Part 1 The CRC Strings conducted by

Lee Hepner, with solo soprano Mary Morrison and solo pianist Paul Helmer: Poetic Suite ..Udo Kasemets Excerpts from Concertino in the Old Style __Leslie Mann

9:30 p.m.—Summer Concert— Part 2 Filmer Hubble directs the Win-

nipeg Choristers. Soloists are: so-prano Kathleen Brown; mezzo-so-prano Heather Ireland; and tenor John Martens, accompanied by an instrumental quintet: A Lyke-Wake Dirge—cantata for ten female voices _Stravinsky

The students felt that there were too many dilettantes at RADA, so they went to Shaw for help in drawing up a manifesto to pre-sent to the RADA directors with the hope that it might help to weed out some of the poseurs. Shaw lent a witty hand, and later, as a member of the board, sat with a straight face while the manifesto was read, and ex-pressed astonishment at the splendid writing job the boys had done on it!

The July 14th guest ( Thurs-day) will be Dr. Gustave Gin-gras, the cheerful, amusing and highly dedicated man who heads the Montreal Rehabilitation In-stitute, which he founded, and who works closely with the Canadian Government on a proj-ect for training Thalidomide babies. He was instrumental in bringing the famous Russian prosthetic ( electric) arm to Can-ada. On the program he tells how it works, and also discusses an idea for dealing with prob-lems like Thalidomide babies in the future. It involves a flying squad to go to the bedside of the mothers to help both parents through what is usually a trau-matic period as they adjust to their special situation.

Friday's guest (July 15th) will be Alan Jarvis, national director of the Canadian Council of the Arts, and former director of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, who has been a film-maker, social worker, writer, art critic, and sculptor. When Miss Patterson talked to him he had just returned from a European tour with a small party of people who were tracing the history of Western art. When she asked him if he had any advice for Dr. Jean Boggs, newly appointed di-rector of the National Gallery, he said: "Tell her to buy herself a bullet-proof vest!"

Later guests include ballerina Veronica Tennent, "Honest Ed" Mirvish, Harold Town, Mayor Moore, Herman Geiger-Torel, Alan King, Gratin Gelinas, and Yousuf Karsh.

talist Speedy West and singer Marty Robbins, two of North America's most celebrated coun-try and western stars.

Tom and Ted Le Garde have recently returned to Australia after a successful five years of entertaining in the U.S. and Canada. They appeared with such famous stars as Roy Rogers and Hank Snow and for

a considerable time had their own show in Los Angeles.

Identical twins, the Le Gardes were born in Queensland, Aus-tralia, and first entered show business singing at country fairs and carnivals. They got their big break when chosen by William Boyd to take part in his Hop-along Cassidy show when it toured Australia.
