EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING LTD.

Originally founded as Bullocks Manufacturing during the post-war residential

housing boom, I.C.E. Manufacturing was recognized for innovation and

excellence early in our history. After the company established a reputation for

designing, manufacturing and installing natural gas conversion burners for oil

and coal-fired furnaces, founder Don Bullocks returned from an ASHRAE trade

show with a natural gas line burner. Inspired, he set out to manufacture the first

direct-fired makeup air unit in his home country of Canada.

Today, the natural gas revolution continues with I.C.E. Manufacturing at the

forefront of the commercial direct-fired industry. Don had the vision long before

many others by designing a product that has outlived his legend. Our BMA

Series is named for him (Bullocks Makeup Air). This forward thinking has carried

Application Guide For Indirect Fired GIDM/GIDMH Series

• GIDM unit models are designated by their MBH output. Thus a GIDM 75 has 750 MBH output, or 750,000 BTUH.

• All GIDM units are 80% efficient at high fire, thus, output is BTUH input * 0.80

• Once you have chosen your required BTUH output, you can use BTUH output/0.80 to find your required input, or actual gas consumption. Using the desired output you can select your model.

• Choose your airflow (this may be your first step if the unit is applied in a make-up air situation)

• Calculate your TSP (add your ESP with your accessories – accessory pressure drops can be found on page 6). With your airflow and TSP selectedyou can find your BHP from the charts on pages 10-12

• Unit weights can be found on page 8 & 9

• Given the entering and leaving air dry bulb temperatures or temperature rise, the equation below can be used to calculate the required MBH capacity

MBH Capacity = (CFM x C x (LAT-EAT))/0.80/1000

MBH capacity: BTUH/1000 (British Thermal units per hour)

CFM: Cubic Feet per minute of air

C: Gas constant of 1.08 based on air density at 75 deg. F

EAT: Entering air dry bulb temperature (deg. F)

LAT: Leaving air dry bulb temperature (deg. F)

0.8: GIDM Series Efficiency

Example For Make-Up Air

A manufacturing facility needs pressurization via make-up air. 10% pressurization is deemed to be appropriate and it is determined that 25,720 CFMexhaust is required. -20 deg. F is the design ambient, and desired discharge temp is 70 deg. F. Units will be roof mounted, down discharge, and willhave an ESP of 0.60" W.C. Select the appropriate GIDM model, and find the BHP for the unit.

Selection:

• Since we are exhausting 25,720 CFM, and desire 10% pressurization, we can calculate that we need 28,300 CFM of supply air (25,720 + 10% = 28300)

• We know our EAT = -20 deg. F, and LAT = 70 deg. F, thus we can calculate:

• MBH Output Capacity = (CFM x C x (LAT-EAT))/1000

• MBH Output Capacity = (28,300 x 1.08 x (70 - (-20)))/1000

• MBH Output Capacity = 2,750.00

• The closest model available is the GIDM 275 which has 2,750 MBH output, and 3,437.5 MBH input

We can now calculate our TSP:

• We are selecting the basic options – inlet filters and damper

• Inlet damper = 0.1" W.C (Page 6)

• Inlet Filters = 0.3" W.C (Page 6)

• TSP = ESP + Accessories

• TSP = 0.60 + 0.1 + 0.3

• TSP = 1.0" W.C.

• Consulting the chart for the GIDM 275 (page 12) at 28,300 CFM and 1.0" W.C we find our BHP = 16.28 BHP – Thus we need a 20.0 HP motor minimum.

Example for Heat-Vent Unit

A small warehouse needs a minimum of 20% fresh air in unoccupied (night time) mode and 100% fresh air in occupied mode (during the day with forkliftin the building). It has been calculated that at -30 deg. F the room loses 1,000,000 BTUH. It has been determined that 11,000 CFM is required for theapplication. The outdoor air is -30 deg. F, and desired leaving air is 75 deg. F. Return air will be 70 deg. F. ESP is calculated to be 0.5" W.C. Select theappropriate model and find the BHP for the unit.

Selection:

Part 1 (Unoccupied mode)

• We only bring in 20% outside air in this mode, thus 2200 CFM is outside air and 8800 CFM is return air

• We know our EAT for outside air = -30 deg. F, and LAT = 75 deg. F, thus we can calculate:

• MBH Capacity = (CFM x C x (LAT-EAT))/1000

• MBH Capacity = (2,200 x 1.08 x (75 - (-30)))/1000

• MBH Capacity = 249.48

• We also know that the room is losing 1,000 MBH, thus we need to add that to the calculation. Thus the total Heat input capacity required = 1,250 MBH

• Before we select our model we must check the occupied mode to ensure we have sufficient heat capacity.

Part 2 (Occupied mode)

• We will be delivering 11,000 CFM of outside in this mode

• We know our EAT for outside air = -30 deg. F, and LAT = 75 deg. F, thus we can calculate:

• MBH Capacity = (CFM x C x (LAT-EAT))/0.80/1000

• MBH Capacity = (11,000 x 1.08 x (75 - (-30)))/0.80/1000

• MBH Capacity = 1,247.40

• Thus to satisfy both options we need to use a GIDM 125.

Note: In this example we are assuming there is an alternate source of heat that will be used during occupied mode to make-up for the heat loss of thewarehouse, which will not be used in un-occupied mode.

We can now calculate our TSP:

• We are selecting the basic options – inlet filters and damper

• Inlet damper = 0.1" W.C (Page 6)

• Inlet Filters = 0.3" W.C (Page 6)

• TSP = ESP + Accessories

• TSP = 0.50 + 0.1 + 0.3

• TSP = 0.9" W.C. (Round up to 1.0" W.C)

• Consulting the chart for the GIDM 125 (page 10) at 11,000 CFM (Use 11,574 CFM) and 1.0" W.C we find our BHP = 5.75 BHP – We can use a 7.5 hp motor.

Example for a Heating Only Unit

A door heater for a large overhead door can potentially see 100% fresh air during times when the overhead doors open frequently. Thus a durable GIDMunit should be selected for this application. 18,000 CFM at 0.5" W.C is determined to be the appropriate amount of air for the vestibule, and 1250 MBHis calculated to be the appropriate amount of heat capacity required. Select the appropriate model and find the BHP for the unit.

Selection:

• Since the heating load calculation has already been completed we simply need to use the heating capacity and match it up with the appropriateGIDM model

• A GIDM 125 is the appropriate model for 1250 MBH

We can now calculate our TSP:

• We are selecting the basic options – inlet filters and damper

• Inlet damper = 0.1" W.C (Page 6)

• Inlet Filters 0.3" W.C (Page 6)

• TSP = ESP + Accessories

• TSP = 0.50 + 0.1 + 0.3

• TSP = 0.9" W.C. (Round up to 1.0" W.C)

• Consulting the chart for the GIDM 125 (page 10) at 18,000 CFM (this value falls between 16,534 CFM and 19,290 CFM) and 1.0" W.C we find ourBHP is between 9.59 BHP and 13.12 BHP. A 15 HP motor should be used.

GIDM Series Temperature Control PackagesBuilding makeup air systems maintain a constant supply air temperature to the space using a discharge temperature controller. The burner output ismodulated over a wide range to compensate for fluctuations in the incoming ambient air temperature. A gas valve regulates output according to thedemand sensed by a discharge air sensor. The fan and heat system functions are typically controlled by a remote panel with a system andsummer/winter switch or a building management system.

Types of Gas Valve Control Available

A) Modulating Discharge Air Temperature ControlThis type consists of a discharge air sensor in the discharge of the unit. The temperature set point is set at the unit and the burner will then modulate tomaintain this discharge temperature.

B) Modulating Discharge Air Temperature Control with Remote Manual Adjustment (RTS)This type consists of a modulating discharge air sensor and a remote temperature selector. The operation of this type is the same as the above (A).However the discharge temperature may be remotely adjusted by the remote temperature selector.

C) Modulating Discharge Air Temperature Control with Remote Temperature Adjustment and Space Override (Brings Unit to Full Fire)This type consists of a modulating discharge air sensor, remote temperature selector, and a space override temperature stat. This is commonly usedwhere there is wide, fast indoor temperature fluctuations (eg. garage) and/or where fine temperature control is not essential, and/or when thetemperature rise is low (eg. 40 deg. F or less). The operation is the same as above (B) however when the space stat requires heat the furnace goes to fullfire regardless of the discharge temperature, until the space thermostat is satisfied.

D) Modulating Discharge Air Temperature Control with Remote Manual Adjustment (RTS'S) and Space Thermostat for Resetting Discharge Air Temperature SettingsThis type consists of a modulating discharge air sensor, a remote temperature selector for first temperature setting (eg. 75 deg. F), a second remotetemperature selector for Override setting (eg. 90 deg. F) and a space thermostat for switching. This type is used where there is moderate indoortemperature fluctuations and/or where fine temperature control is essential and/or when the unit temperature rise is high. The operation is the same as inC however the second remote temperature selector limits the discharge air temperature when the space thermostat calls for full fire. The burner willmodulate to maintain the second set point until the space thermostat is satisfied.

Note: The space stat may be replaced with dry contacts to allow a building management system to do the switching.

E) Building Management Control InterfaceThis type consists of a DDC Gas modulating interface (0-10Vdc or 4-20mA). This allows a building management system to tie into the unit controls. Thebuilding management system now controls the discharge temperature of the unit and the burner will modulate to maintain that temperature.

F) Modulating Space Thermostat with Auto Discharge Temperature ResetThis type consists of a modulating duct stat and a modulating space stat. This type is used where space loads continuously change. This system willautomatically adjust the discharge temperature to accommodate for the load changes providing precise space temperature control.

Miscellaneous Control Options

Freeze ProtectionSpecified to protect against untempered air entering the space. The freeze thermostat, also known as an auto low limit, is located in the discharge airand is wired in parallel with a time delay relay. In the event that the discharge air temperature is not above the freeze thermostat setting, within a presettime during start-up and under normal operation the unit will shut down.

Inlet Air ControllerFeatures an adjustable thermostat which monitors outdoor air temperatures. When the temperature exceeds the setting of the thermostat, the burner willnot operate even when the unit is in the winter mode.

Night SetbackThis feature is available as an option on all temperature control systems. By lowering the discharge air temperature requirements during unoccupiedperiods the owner can realize operating economies and still provide heat to the space as required. During the occupied cycle the unit will be brought onthough an interlock, timeclock or switch. During the unoccupied period the timeclock provided, switches the system control to a single stage thermostatset at the desired unoccupied temperature. The unit will then be started intermittently to provide heat to maintain the space at the unoccupiedtemperature setpoint.

Type and Description

Furnish an I.C.E GIDM Model indirect fired self-contained make-up air unit in accordance with the following specifications. The unit shall be ETL andC.G.A certified

The heater shall be designed to ensure a minimum efficiency of 80% at full firing rate. The heat exchanger and blower shall be constructed so they caneasily be disassembled and reassembled in the field if necessary. The unit shall be equipped to operate from a single point power connection. Theheater shall be flame tested before shipment and a detailed flame test report shall be kept on file by the manufacturer. Factory testing shall be confirmedwith a combustion analyzer and flow meter. The heater shall be shipped completely factory assembled and wired including all prepiped manifoldcomponents and fuses, ready for immediate power and fuel connections.

Casing

The unit exterior casing shall be heavy gauge G90 rated bonderized steel. Unit roofs shall be sloped for water drain off and feature standing seamconstruction. The entire unit casing shall be insulated with 2 in. thick 3-lb. Fiberglass insulation with hard neoprene backing in a sandwich wall fashion.The unit exterior shall be finished with industrial catalyzed epoxy paint. An integral welded iron channel frame shall support the unit casing. Formedsheet metal bases are unacceptable. The structural iron frame shall be sandblasted, primed and finished with industrial catalyzed epoxy paint.

Blower/Motor Section

The fan section and motor assembly shall be constructed in accordance with the requirements of the Air Moving and Conditioning Association (AMCA).The assembly shall be designed to house the fan(s), bearings, motor, and v-belts which shall be selected for at least 50% above the rated motorcapacity. The fan(s) and motor shall be mounted on a welded unitary base made of angle iron frame. The frame shall be sandblasted, primed andfinished with industrial catalyzed epoxy paint. The unitary base shall be provided with seismic spring vibration isolation. The blower section shall have ahinged access door to allow easy maintenance of filters and belts. The NEMA T-Frame motor shall be mounted on an adjustable base located within thefan section. The blower wheel shall be statically and dynamically balanced, and mounted on a turned, ground and polished shaft with rigid bearingsupports. The shaft shall be designed with a maximum operating speed not exceeding 75% of the first critical speed. The bearings shall be split taperlock ball bearing type L20 minimum life of 100,000 hours.

Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger shall be of four pass design with a primary combustion chamber and multi-tube secondary. Internal turbulators or other fluerestrictor to boost efficiency are unacceptable. The entire primary heat transfer surface shall be constructed of Type 409 Series stainless steel, and shallbe cooled in its entirety by the air to be heated. The Secondary heat transfer surface shall also be constructed from Type 409 Series stainless steel. The stainless steel tubes shall be continuously welded into the secondary front and rear header tube sheets to ensure an airtight seal. Mechanicallyswedging the tubes are unacceptable. All heat transfer surfaces, including headers and the front collector box, shall be inside the casing and in theairstream. The construction of the heat exchanger shall permit free, unrestricted lateral, vertical, and peripheral expansion during the heating and coolingcycle without damage or strain to any part. The heat exchanger shall be designed to prevent contamination of heated air with the products ofcombustion. A spring loaded pressure relief door with glass view port shall be provided. The entire heater casing shall be lined with a 22 gauge liner.

Burner

The heater shall have of a power type 409 stainless steel burner, with integral combustion air blower and motor; combustion air proving switch,removable pilot assembly and positive pilot combustion air supply. The combustion air damper shall be interlocked with the main gas valve to insure a proper air/gas mixture. A solid state programmable safeguard relay with UV Scanner and purge card shall continuously monitor main and pilot flame. The main and pilot valve train to the burner shall be completely factory prepiped. This assembly shall be wired and include the following minimumcomponents; main and automatic shut off valves and adequate unions and test ports for service. A 6,000 volt transformer shall accomplish ignition ofpilot flame. The unit shall be suitable for natural gas and designed and certified by ETL and C.G.A to provide full gas modulation. Depending on theburner selection, turndown from 100% to 7% of output are achievable.

Electrical Control Equipment

Electrical assembly and components shall be in strict accordance with the latest provisions and requirements of the Nation Electric Code. Controlcabinet shall be designed and constructed to ETL specifications. A dead front safety disconnect switch shall be mounted on the control enclosure door.Electrical cabinets shall be NEMA 12. The cabinets shall be located in a weather proof cabinet. Provisions for service padlocking shall be provided. Thefollowing items shall be located within the electrical enclosure: fuses, starters, control relays, timing and holding relays, resistors and numbered terminalstrips. All components shall be labeled and cross referenced to control and field wiring diagrams. The control circuit shall be 110V, single phase. Wiringshall be neatly run in “PANDUIT” wiring duct. Low and/or line voltage thermostats shall be furnished shipped loose for installation by others. Unit shallbe equipped with automatic low limit freeze protection with bypass timer. Unit will feature a convenience outlet with separate disconnect, circuit breakerprotection and supply transformer. Temperature control shall consist of a solid state PID loop with adjustable setpoints. A discharge temperature sensorshall be wired in series-parallel to room sensor. The temperature control system may be controlled by DDC at any time during operation. DDC systemmay take control of blower/burner/dampers and modulating gas valve.

Remote Control Panels

Remote NEMA 12 locking stainless steel control panels shall be equipped with summer or winter switch and blower on, burner on, flame failure andloaded filter lights. A remote adjustment potentiometer shall control damper positioning. A LCD display shall provide system temperature and setpoints.

Mix Box and Filter Section

A mix box with fresh air and return air dampers shall be provided. The dampers are to be aluminum airfoil low leak type with seals. The dampers are tobe inset into 22 gauge steel mix box liners. The dampers shall be equipped with modulation actuators.

The blower section shall include a motor operated outside air intake sized for 100% outside air. The filters shall be 2" pleated throwaway type withminimum of 85% arrestance and 30% dust. Filter access shall be through a latched and gasketed access doors located on both sides of the unit.
