The Tradition Continues…

From the staff:We love a local holiday. There’s a reason

why the winter holiday season is called “the most wonderful time of the year” – people are more joyous, giving and caring of family and unknown friends. And nothing beats the warmth we feel being around those we love and participating in our area’s traditions.

In our office we thought long and hard about the approach we wanted when plan-ning Gifts 2014 and decided to highlight our hometowns and state. From tree lightings to parades, choral concerts to decorated main streets, each community has created its own identity and traditions.

The goal of GIfts 2014 is to highlight the events, people and businesses that are available to you locally. We know there are many options for customers during the holiday season, but our friends who own the shops and restaurants in each community

should be just as much a part of the holiday as our family visiting from out of town. All of the gifts are items made in Indiana – most even in our communities. We’ve also done extensive work to make sure to highlight the best holiday events taking place in our com-munities to keep you and your family enter-tained because there are so many options to keep the little ones and grownups busy in the coming weeks.

Tips for shopping, gift wrapping and deli-cious recipes will help make the season a little bit easier – and a little bit more creative. Saving you time on your shopping and plan-ning, we hope will help you make this the best holiday yet. Spend this time with friends and family, and enjoy what makes the holi-day really special.

We wish you and your family a delight-ful holiday season filled with love, joy and peace.

What makes your city/town special during the holidays?

What is your favorite holiday tradition/production in your city/town?

The Reynolds Equipment com-mitment to creating a one-of-kind light show is something we make sure to see every year.

John Wechsler, Launch Fishers founder

Fishers is a great community to enjoy the holidays due to the family friendly environ-ment. Our community has an abundance of young children that enjoy every moment of the holiday season. Even as our population grows with the number of empty nesters, the grandchildren make it even more special.

John Weingardt, Fishers City Councilor

Spending time with family and friends, and observing the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Robert Knox, Zionsville police chief

Christmas in the Village is a wonderful community activity. It’s great fun to see the whole town (and visitors) come to-gether for carriage rides, trol-ley rides, Santa, tree lighting, petting zoo and shopping and dining. My daughters and I always enjoy the parade (Nov. 29 at 5 pm); it’s always an amazing display of all things Zionsville.

Jeff Papa, Zionsville Town Council president

One of my favorite holiday traditions as Mayor is Holiday on the Square, our official kick-off to the holiday season. It is heartwarming to see so many families attend this event.

Jim Brainard, Mayor of Carmel

I grew up in rural northern Indiana, cornfields as far as the eye could see. Westfield brings a great mix between city and country that brings me back to my childhood. The people of Westfield have that “small town” pride and personality that shines during the holidays. A wonderful spirit of community.

Joel Rush, Westfield police chief

My favorite holiday tradition in my city of West-field is the annual lighting of the tree that takes place during the Westfield in Lights celebration. This event is very nice and it is wonderful to see the community turn out and join together to usher in the holiday season while sharing fellowship.

Julie Sole, Westfield Chamber of Commerce executive director

What makes Noblesville so special during the holiday is the quaint feeling you get when visiting the square during the holidays. The tree lighting and ice sculpture festival the day after Thanksgiv-ing is a treasured tradition. The Noblesville square is always special, but during the holidays it is a place where families make cherished memories.

Beth Niedermeyer, Noblesville Schools superintendent

Seeing Santa’s House on the square with children and their parents waiting for that very important visit and picture with Santa each year is very spe-cial, and surely Noblesville is one of the very last of the cities to actually have this tradition.

Gail Nowicki, Noblesville Realtor and community volunteer

I think the Holiday in the Arts District is a really unique and festive event with carolers, elves, reindeer and more sets us apart from many communi-ties across the country.

Rick Sharp, Carmel City Councilor

Here are a few ideas to keep children en-tertained through the holiday season:

• Holiday place mats – Have the kids make place mats and place cards for everyone. You provide supplies such as construction paper, glue, scissors and crayons, and let the kids create.

• Scavenger hunt – Divide the kids into teams and send them on a holiday scavenger hunt. Items to search for might include a picture of a snowman, an autograph from someone who doesn’t like sweet potatoes, a recipe for stuffing, a piece of holiday candy, a greeting card, etc.

• Pin the nose on Rudolph – Give each

child a picture of Rudolph to color. Then play Pin the Nose on Rudolph and give a prize to the winner.

• Create with Playdough contest – Give each child some Play-Doh (To make your own, mix 4 cups flour, 1 cup salt and 1 3/4 cups water. Color with food coloring if you like.) Have each child make an angel/snowman/rein-deer and give little prizes for the most colorful, the biggest, the most delicate, etc.

• Baby pictures – Have each adult bring a baby picture and see if the kids can guess which picture goes with each adult.

According to local business owners, when people shop locally during the holi-days, everyone benefits.

“There’s a ton of studies out there that say more money stays in the local economy once you shop at a local store,” said Julie Johns-Cole, Zionsville Chamber of Com-merce executive director. “Whether it’s through wages or donations or using other goods and services, study after study shows around 50 percent versus when you use a large corporate store, as low as 30 percent of every dollar you spend today (returns to) the local economy.”

Today, online purchases are more popu-lar than ever, but shopping through a screen doesn’t have the same feeling as shopping in person.

“I think it’s absolutely building a relation-ship and it’s all about an experience,” said Chris Owens, Noblesville Main Street execu-tive director. “Be it clothing or technology or otherwise, it’s a chance to have a deeper interaction. There’s a name, a face and a story that goes along with the purchase that you may not necessarily find with one of the

bigger retailers.”Zionsville Town Manager Ed Mitro said he

shops locally whenever possible.“I go into the shop because I get to talk

to the local merchants and you develop a rapport with them. It’s important,” he said. “I know online shopping is big, but it’s very impersonal and I think people like that contact.”

When new or growing businesses see the success of our local shops, more money stays in the community.

“Economically, a strong and healthy busi-ness community contributes greatly to the tax base of a community,” explained Julie Sole, Westfield Chamber of Commerce ex-ecutive director.

She said that a robust business communi-ty that is supported by many, including local shoppers, may entice additional business to locate to the area.

“As we grow, we should attract local entrepreneurs who both live in and do busi-ness in our community,” said Luci Snyder, Carmel Economic Development Com-mission president. “(It’s) a self-generating success. If our restaurants thrive, then we attract more businesses and we have more choices.”

12. Place bow in center of your package, still holding on. Tie bow to package with left over ribbon from step eight.

11. Repeat alternating direction until the bow is the size you want. Do not let go of center of bow.

10. Make a second loop going the op-posite direction, returning the end to your thumb and forefinger. Give ribbon a half twist and make third loop going the origi-nal direction.

9. Take a second piece of ribbon and form a loop holding the end between your thumb and forefinger, twist.

5. Position box so top is facing up. Run your thumb and forefinger across the edg-es of the box to create a creased edge. Repeat on bottom of the box.

1. Start with an area big enough to roll your wrapping paper out flat. Measure the perimeter of your gift adding a few inches to make sure you have enough to cover your entire gift. Cut the paper.

Gift wrapping can be the most stressful part of the entire holiday season. Follow our guide below:

6. With the package in front of you, lay ribbon lengthwise along the middle of the box.

2. Place the gift face down in the middleof the paper. Bring paper from the long side of the box, up to the middle of your package. Pull both sides tightly so the paper hugs your package smoothly, and tape closed.

7. Flip gift over and wrap ribbon around until it meets in the middle. Fold right sideof ribbon over left.

3. Next, you need to close the ends. Face the open end toward you and fold the right and left edges, pushing the sides in next to your box, to form flaps.

8. Pull ribbon up short sides of the box un-til it meets in the middle at the top again.Tie into a knot, leaving extra ribbon attached.

4. Fold top flap down to the box, pulling tightly, and tape. Fold the bottom flap up tightly and tape. Repeat on other side of package.

A savory holiday dinner

Apple Pecan Cornbread Dressing

Ingredients: One 9-by-9-inch pan cornbread, cooled and crumbled; 4 cups herb-seasoned dry bread stuffing mix; 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley; 1/2 tea-spoon salt; 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger; 3/4 cup butter; 1 cup chopped celery, 1 cup chopped onion, 2 cups apple juice; 2 cups chopped apples; three eggs; and 1/2 cup chopped pecans.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter one 3-quart casse-role dish. In a large bowl combine the cornbread, stuffing mix, pars-ley, salt and ginger. In a heavy saucepan melt the butter and sauté the celery and onion for eight to 10 minutes or until tender. Add this to the cornbread mixture and mix well. Stir in the chopped apple, chopped pecans, apple juice and beaten eggs. Toss lightly. Spoon dressing into the prepared casserole dish. Bake 30 to 35 minutes.

Bacon Wrapped Dates Stuffed with Bleu Cheese

Ingredients: 1 pound sliced bacon, cut in half; 1 pound pitted dates; and 4 ounces bleu cheese.

Directions: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Slice dates in half and open them up. Pinch off pieces of bleu cheese and place them into the center of the dates. Close the halves of the dates and wrap a half-slice of bacon around the outside. Secure each with a toothpick. Ar-range in a baking dish or on a bak-ing sheet with sides to catch any grease. Bake 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven or until the bacon is crisp. Turn dates over after the first 20 minutes for even cooking.

Chocolate Bourbon Pecan PieIngredients: 9-inch pie shell; 1 cup white sugar; 1 cup light corn syrup; 1/2 cup butter; four eggs, beaten; 1/4 cup bourbon; 1 teaspoon va-nilla extract; 1/4 teaspoon salt; 6 ounces semisweet chocolate chips; and 1 cup chopped pecans.

Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a small saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup and butter or margarine. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until butter or margarine melts and sugar dissolves. Cool slightly. In a large bowl, combine eggs, bourbon, vanilla and salt. Mix well. Slowly pour sugar mixture into egg mixture, whisking constantly. Stir in chocolate chips and pecans. Pour mixture into pie shell. Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 55 minutes, or until set and golden. May be served warm or chilled.

Cinnamon Bun CookiesIngredients: Vanilla cookie dough – 1/2 cup powdered sugar; 3/4 cup un-salted butter; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract; and 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour. Middle – one large egg white; 1 tablespoon water; 1/4 cup granulated white sugar; and 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon. Icing – 1/2 cup powdered sugar; 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream; 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract; and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon.

Directions: Prepare dough: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, cream together the sugar, butter, salt and vanilla. Add the flour, stirring until the dough comes together. Flatten the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until you’re ready to use it. Roll the dough: Transfer chilled dough to a lightly floured piece of parch-ment or waxed paper. Roll it into a 9-by-12-inch rectangle. In a small bowl, whisk together egg white and water until foamy. Brush onto rolled out dough. In another small bowl, whisk together sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle it evenly over the dough. Starting with a long edge, carefully roll the dough into a log, sealing the edge (if dough sticks to parchment, gently use a metal spatula to guide it off of the paper). Wrap in plastic wrap or parchment and freeze until firm. Bake the cookies: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease (or line with parchment) two cookie sheets. Remove the dough from the freezer and unwrap it. Using a sharp knife, gently cut it into 1/2-inch slices. Transfer them to the prepared baking sheets. Bake the cook-ies for 12 to 15 minutes, until a light golden brown. Remove from the oven and transfer to a rack to cool. Ice the cookies: Sift or strain the powdered sugar into a medium-sized bowl to remove any lumps. Whisk the cream into the sugar to make a smooth icing. Drizzle or spread icing onto cookies.

Apple, Cranberry and Walnut Stuffed Pork Loin

Ingredients: 5 tablespoons butter; one apple – peeled, cored, and chopped; one small onion, chopped; one celery stalk, diced; 1/2 cup chopped walnuts; one cup unsweetened applesauce; 1/2 cup dried cranberries; 1 1/2 cups water; 5 cups dry bread crumbs; 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon; 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt; 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves; 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg; 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger; and one 3-pound boneless rolled pork loin roast.

Direction: Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Melt the butter in a me-dium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the apple, cranberries, on-ion, celery and walnuts, and cook five minutes, until vegetables are tender. Mix in the applesauce, water and bread crumbs. Cook and stir until the bread crumbs have absorbed the liquid. Season with cinnamon, kosher salt, cloves, nutmeg and ginger. Unroll the pork roast, and place in a baking dish. Spoon the stuffing mixture over the roast. Arrange any excess stuffing around the roast. Roll the roast so that the fatty side is on top and tie with kitchen twine. Bake 45 to 50 minutes in the preheated oven, to an internal temperature of 145 degrees F.
