Definition• Children and youth with
outstanding talent perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment
• These children and youth exhibit high performance capability in intellectual, creative, and/or artistic areas, possess an unusual leadership capacity, or excel in specific academic fields. They require service or activities not ordinary provided by the schools. Outstanding talents are present in children and youth from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.
Accommodations• Work with reading, writing,
and mathematics specialists in the schools– Initiate contact early in the
school year and schedule regular meetings throughout the year to discuss students’ needs, plan instruction, and evaluate the program
– Become familiar with one another’s programs• Philosophy, curriculum,
instructional procedures, and materials
– Discuss role and decide on responsibilities. Clarify who will teach the skills and how. Who will accountable for grades and reporting to administrators and parents
• Help students improve motivation to learn– Create and orderly, safe
learning community. Avoid practices that tent to isolate, stigmatize, or disfavor at-risk students
– Set clear purpose for learning. Let students know their academic missions and the importance of what they are learning
– Have high present expectations for academic achievement, allow students gradually to develop high expectations for future achievement
Accommodations (Cont.)• Working conditions for
alternative activities– Stay “on task” at all times with
the alternative activities you have chosen
– Don’t interrupt the teacher while he or she is teaching
– When you need help, and the teacher is busy, ask someone else who is also working on the alternative activities
– If no one else can help you, continue to try the activity yourself until the teacher is available, or move on to another activity until the teacher is free
– Use “6-inch voice” for talking to each other about the alternative activities
– Never brag about your opportunities on the alternative activities
– If you must go in and out of the room, do so soundlessly
– If you are going to work in another location, stay on task there, and follow the directions of the adult in charge
– Don’t bother anyone else– Don’t call attention to yourself
Technologies• Computer games such as
“The Way Things Work”– Bursting with machines,
movies, animations and gizmos, plus all the wit and humor of David Macaulay, this program explains the fascinating worlds of history's from 7000 B.C. to the present.
– The program is divided into four main sections : " The A-Z of Machines", "Principles of Science", "History" and "Inventors" each explaining the workings of more than 150 simple and complex machines and inventions.
Technologies (Count.)• Pinball Science
– Students will learn about various scientific principles as they go through the Inventor's Log- a fascinating view of the wonders of the world as explained by science.
– Students then apply their knowledge to become mechanical engineers in this program and actually design and build their own exciting pinball games.
– Using springs, hot air balloons, gears and more, as they learn more science they gather more and more gadgets they can use in building their games- as the bumpers and obstacles of their game come together, their knowledge of science increases.
