Ten-year-old Domingo’s parents were unable to find work, or to meet their children’s most basic needs, so Domingo and his sister were brought to an orphanage by authorities in El Salvador.

Domingo has thrived in his new home environment. He receives straight A’s in all his class work, and was the only boy in his school to take on extra English-language classes. His dream is to become a mechanical engineer. “I want to bring technology to El Salvador,” Domingo said.

Rania’s parents died in the 2010 Haiti earthquake when she was just 5. An aunt took Rania in, but could only give her spaghetti noodles and rice to eat.

Rania’s aunt eventually abandoned her at an orphanage, leaving Rania, who has no siblings, completely alone. Rania, now 9, has adapted to her new home, and happily talks of her friendships and the joy of being given three nutritious meals a day. “They take care of me here,” Rania said.

Teresa was given up by her mother shortly after birth. An aunt took her in, but ultimately could not afford to care for Teresa. At the age of 7, she was brought to an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

This talented girl hopes to become a dancer and singer. When we met her, she sang a beautiful Haitian Creole rendition of “Here I Am to Worship.”

Teresa says she enjoys school, and playing a tag-like game called lago deli with her friends.

Ryan’s father died when he was 3 years old. Soon after that his mother abandoned him and he was sent to live with his aunt’s family.

One day, while playing with matches, Ryan accidentally burned his aunt’s house down, totally destroying it. His aunt’s family then abandoned him at an orphanage in Guyana.

Caring staff at the orphanage continue to spend time with Ryan, nurturing him and helping him work through his sadness. His days are filled with school and playing with friends.

After being abandoned by their drug-addicted mother, Jocelyn and her three sisters were sent to live with their alcoholic father. The girls had no food except for the fruit they could find by climbing tall trees.

A kind neighbor alerted authorities to the terrible situation, and the sisters were placed in an orphanage in El Salvador. Jocelyn, 10, has only been in the home for two months, but proudly reports that she now climbs trees only for fun.

Wilgens was just 7 years old when the 2010 Haiti earthquake hit. A year later, his mother, who was still without a home or a job, was unable to care for him, so she dropped Wilgens off at an orphanage. He hasn’t seen her since.

Wilgens, now 11, is in a safe and nurturing environment, attending school regularly and concentrating on his studies. “I like reading. I know it will help me to be somebody when I grow up,” said Wilgens.

Christmas is a time of sorrow and longing for countless children throughout the Caribbean and Latin America who are victims of neglect, abuse or abandonment. They need your love and compassion as much as they need food, clothing and shelter. Through our generous donors, Food For The Poor supports orphanages that help children heal from their suffering.

The children in this booklet represent countless others who are still alone and need your help. Your gift provides the necessities all children need, and serves as a reminder to every child that they are loved. Through your compassionate generosity, you can demonstrate to them the power of God’s love and help them heal.
