This dazzling spectacle that unfolds on the Nagara River every
year from May to October shows you how the traditional method
of fishing for ayu, a Japanese sweetfish, has been preserved in

for on nights of the full moon or inclement weather), you canwatch the cormorant fishing masters and their cormorant birds
fish by torchlight on the river from a nearby boat. This traditional
practice is the pride and joy of Gifu City, and is not to be missed!
The loading docks for the viewing boats is located near the
Nagaragawa Hot Spring area at 1-2 Minato-machi in Gifu City.
Boarding times: 6:15pm, 6:45pm, 7:15pm, fishing: 7:458:30pm

Anyone interested in experiencing something a little bit
more out of the ordinary might want to look into this
traditional fishing method called yana, which is held in
various places around Gifu Prefecture from August until the
beginning of November. The ayusweetfish that are
swimming upstream actually jump right onto the raft and
you can catch them with your bare hands! This is a catch-
and-release operation, but if you want to taste some ayu
after youve enjoyed fishing them up with your own hands,
the places running yanafishing operations tend to have
restaurants as well!
Hida Furukawa Yana 15 min. walk from JR Hida Furukawa
Station. Catching the fish is free, but eating will cost you!
Coinciding with the traditional Japanese Obonseason
in which memorial services are held to honor the
spirits of ones ancestors, the Gujo Odoridance is
known as one of Japans Three Great Bon-odoriDance
Festivals, and is held over a period of 33 nights
throughout the summer. There is also a period of four
days during which the tetsuya-odori (all-night dancing)
is held, where the dancing continues until the sun
rises! There are ten different dances in total, all of
which are so simple that you can easily figure them out
on the fly, so dont think twice about jumping in and
dancing up a storm!
The dates for 2014s tetsuya-odoriare: August 1316
