INSTALLING GUTTERING

& DOWNPIPESWickes gutters can be directly

connected to many other

manufacturers plastic gutters,

without the need for specialconnectors. A compatibility

chart listing the gutter systems

on the market with which they

are compatible can be found

towards the end of this leaflet.

The temptation is to keep

old guttering in use for as

long as possible. Eventually it

becomes inefficient and worn-

out, perhaps even dangerous,requiring replacement.

When that time arrives, or you

need to fit new guttering to a

conservatory or extension, this

leaflet will help you understand

the products and basic rules,

enabling you to fit the right

guttering, safely, correctly,

in a trouble free way.

Ideally, all guttering shouldbe inspected twice a year.

These inspections only take a

matter of minutes and involve

a routine look at the gutting

systems condition.

2. REMOVING AN OLD GUTTER &

DOWNPIPESSome gutters, especially cast iron, will beeavy ad diicult t maage. Altug

most of the gutter should be supportedwith gutter brackets, some sections such asstopends may not. When dismantling thegutter, any unsupported sections shouldbe supprted usig 150mm ails driven intothe fascia underneath the gutter. See FIG.7.

Te blts used i te jiig metal guttersections will probably be rusted and needto be cut off with a hacksaw, or drilledut. oce te blts ave bee remved, the mastic or putty seal, used t jilengths of gutter, will break away easily.Remve te gutter, secti by section,

and independently lower each piece to theground.

oce a legt gutter as bee remved, the fascia support brackets may beunscrewed and discarded. Continue thisseuece util yu reac te ed te

gutter. Some sections of gutter or downpipemay be badly rusted together. If this is thecase, te jit will ave t be careullybroken up using a hammer and chisel.

Cast iron downpipe brackets were oftenixed usig masry ‘pipe ails’. Te ailscan prove difficult to remove and mayneed to be driven out using a hammerand cold chisel.NOTE: In both cases safety glasses andgloves should be worn.

old plastic gutter systems ca be easilyremved, simply uclip te gutter jits adsupport brackets and remove each sectionof gutter. Gutter fittings may thenbe uscrewed ad discarded. Jitigmaterials are t rmally used PVCu

dwpipes, tey suld just pull apartdurig disassembly. Ay jits tat appearto be glued will have to be cut out usinga fine toothed saw.

3. RENOVATING THE FASCIA BOARDWhen the old gutter and downpipesare removed, the fascia may now be

reurbised. Ay deects i te timber, sucas screw holes and cracks, shouldbe cleaned and filled with an appropriatewd iller. Yu may id patces wetrt; agai tis must be trugly cleaedthen filled. Severely rotted timber shouldbe cut out and replaced either withpreservative treated timber or Wickeslw maiteace PVCu prducts.

If the painted finish of the fascia is in poorcondition, it should be stripped, the woodand any filler rubbed down, and a coatof preservative applied before repainting.Treat bare timber with Wickes WoodcareBasecat llwed by Wdcare Tpcatrather than conventional paint.

This could be a good time to replace tiredwde fascias ad Sets wit Wickeseasy t use, lw maiteace PVCu

products. See Good Idea Leaflet 104for more details.

4. INSTALLING THE NEW GUTTERSYSTEMYur gutter system may be istalled level r t a maximum all 3mm per metre.

NOTE: hwever itted, te bttm te

roof tile and the top edge of the gutter mustever be mre ta 30mm (11 / 4") apart.

FIXING PROCEDUREUse a plumblie cetred ver te gully or drain connection to establish the positionof your first outlet. See FIG. 8.

fix te utlet t te ascia t suit levelixig r gutter wit a all. next, ix a

supprt bracket abut 55mm rm te end of the fascia board, furthest from theoutlet. When using a single screw fixingbracket to secure the string line, take caret t twist te bracket. By psitiig te

bracket towards the top of the fascia, youwill create a fall on your gutter. The fall canbe checked by running a taut stringlinebetween the two fittings and resting a spiritlevel on the string. The line will also helpyou position your next fitting at the rightlevel. See FIG. 9.

I yu reuire a level gutter, ix te supprt

bracket level wit te gutter utlet. Agai, run a taut stringline between the twofittings and tie it off, this will act as a leveland help you in the positioning of the nextfitting. See FIG. 9.

Usig te striglie as a guide psitisupport brackets at one metre intervalsstartig rm te utlet. Remember t ix all

jiig brackets r uis t te ascia.oce all te supprt ittigs are i place the

gutter may be cut to suit and installed. At teends of a gutter runs you may terminatethe gutter with an external stopend.Psiti te stped abut 50mm (2") pastthe end of the tile edge, this should helpcollect water swept from the roof by thewind.

To calculate how long a section of gutterneeds to be between two fittings, measurete distace betwee ‘isert t ere’ lieson the inside the fittings. See FIG. 10.This will give you the exact length at whichthe gutter must be cut. This will also allowfor expansion and contraction movement of

the gutter.

Mark te gutter wit a pecil ad cut t

legt usig a ie tted saw (a siglescrew bracket can be used as a saw guidewe cuttig gutter t te reuired legt).Carefully remove any burrs or rough edgeswit a ile r sarp kie. Apply Wickessilice lubricat t te jit seals, adthen install gutter into the relevant section. To install the gutter into a fitting, insert therear edge of the gutter under the backretaiig lip te ittig. Esure tat it isfully home, This is even easier with TheWickes system gutters. Simple wing clipsare used to hold the guttering in placein most connectors. This prevents sorefingers. See FIG. 11.If you are installing guttering around acorner, secure your gutter angle in positionand repeat the fixing procedure as before.

5. INSTALLING DOWNPIPESBuildigs wit very sallw eaves, suc as garages, extensions and conservatories, may not need an offset to connect thegutter utlet t te dwpipe. hwever, i a small set is reuired, te ur

adjustable set suld be used (430-062).

This is a two piece fitting that is simply cut tosuit, then fitted.

A stadard dmestic prperty will rmallyhave a larger eaves overhang. If this iste case, yu will eed t use te 112.5°or 92.5° set beds. A set may beformed by cutting a piece of downpipe atte reuired legt ad ittig it betwee tetwo bends. See FIG. 12. To give the offsetmaximum support, fit a downpipe bracketdirectly around the lower offset bend.

When connecting the next section ofpipe to the lower offset bend, fit the pipe

over the bend spigot, but do not pushully me; allw r a expasi gapof approximately 6mm. This should beallowed for at every bend, branch orconnector, as also shown in FIG. 12.

Visually ceck all brackets are secure. That none of the gutters or downpipesare loose, cracked, or seals any havebecome dislodged. Look for staining alongthe underside of the guttering as this isthe first sign of a leak. If in doubt, test bypouring some water into the gutter.
