Academic Eligibility
The Gillespie County 4-H program and the Texas A&M
Agrilife Extension Service supports the Texas Education
Code requirements to be labelled as an official
“extracurricular activity”. Please keep in mind that in all 4
-H competitive events 4-H members must be eligible to
compete. This applies regardless of the day or time during
the week the event is held. Eligibility requirements apply
to all 4-H members whether they are enrolled in public,
private or home school. Eligibility is determined by the
school, not the county Extension agent. Parents should
address questions about a student’s eligibility to the
school.
I AM DRIVING 4-H YOUTH TO A CONTEST, STOCK
SHOW, TOURNAMENT, ETC…. DO I NEED TO
ENROLL AS A VOLUNTEER ONLINE?
YES!!!Club managers, project leaders, coaches, and all
other adults who will be driving 4-H members in their per-
sonal vehicles this next year MUST enroll and will be as-
sessed an annual $5.00 fee to cover background screen-
ings. This fee can be paid online through 4H Connect with a
credit card.
Adult Volunteers must also complete 2 online trainings
during the annual enrollment process in 4-H Connect titled
“Texas 4-H Volunteer Training” and “Ensuring a Safe Envi-
ronment”. These online trainings take approximately 15
minutes per training. You will see them whenever you work
on your enrollment, so plan to take 45 minutes to complete
the trainings and the enrollment process for adults.
Congratulations to Mills Meier for receiving Champion Showman at
the 2017 National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO
GILLESPIE 4-H ROBOTICS PROGRAM HOSTS TOURNAMENT On Saturday, January 21st the Gillespie 4-H Robotics Program hosted a FIRST®
LEGO® League Team Tournament at Fredericksburg Elementary School. Twelve teams
from Bandera, Harper, Fredericksburg, and San Antonio participated in the tourna-
ment. Teams arrived early in the morning for judging sessions, which include CORE®
Values, Project, and Robot Design. Teams also competed in one practice Robot Game
during the morning. During the CORE® values judging sessions, teams are evaluated on
how they are able to work with one another and make decision. In the Project Judging,
teams presented their research projects that they have been working on since mid-
September. The Robot Design session examined how each team’s robot was constructed
and if their programming achieved the goals of each team.
At 1:00pm the opening ceremonies began followed by the Robot Games, where teams
competed to earn as many points as they could in 2 ½ minutes. Each team competed in
three matches, and the highest score among all of the matches is the score for the
team. Three Gillespie County 4-H teams received an award at the tournament.
The Harper Robo Horns received the 2nd place Champions Award because they were
judged to be well balanced in all three judging sessions and the robot game. The Harper
Robo Horns are made up of Barrett Sander, GG Sander, Silas Sander, Garrett Long, Ethan
Marschall, and Hanna Whitaker. The Bro-Botics earned the CORE® Values Award for
their ethics in all parts of the game. The Bro-Botics is composed of Leyton Torres, Gibby
Lambert, Derek Whitworth, Colter Potucek, Spencer Holt, Matthew Holt, and Maverick
Potucek. Lastly, the Storming Seabirds won the Robot Design award for their robot con-
struction and programming. The Storming Seabirds are Aven Ottmers, Karsten Ottmers,
Rowyn Bowlby, Phaedra Bowlby, & Holt Geistweidt.
Two Gillespie County 4-H robotics teams placed high enough in all judging sessions
and the robot game to advance to the next level of competition on Sunday, March 12th in
San Antonio, TX. These two teams are K-9000 (team members include: Dane Carter,
Luke DiCuffa, Mark Dicuffa, Jace Granville, Mark Millhouse, and Case Semmler and the
Harper Robo Horns (team members were listed in previous paragraph).
