    1 Introduction

    Associated Engineering (AE) was retained by the City of Vancouverto complete the retrofit and

    rehabilitation design of theBurrard Street Bridge. As part of that assignment, we developed a

    strengthening scheme for the concrete approach spans to allow the bridge to safely carry CSA-

    S6 CL625 vehicle loading.

    2 Existing Girders of Concrete Approach Spans

    The Burrard Street Bridge, shown in Figure 1-1, consists of steel truss main spans and concrete

    approach spans.

    City of Vancouver

    Type 3 - Bents 10 to 13; 13 to 16; 16 to 19; and P6 to Bent 24. These sections have three-span

    continuous girders with span lengths varying from 22.8 to 27.1 m.

    Type 4 - Bent 19 to P1 and Bent 24 to North Abutment. These sections have two-span

    continuous girders with span lengths varying from 21.1 to 21.9 m.
