Girls change the world
The Bronze, Silver and Gold Award Girl Scouts listed in this booklet have achieved the highest honors in Girl Scouts. They’ve selected an issue they are passionate about, raised their voices to be heard, and worked to make the world a better place. The process of earning a Girl Scout Highest Award is to identify a community issue, research the issue, develop a plan to address it in cooperation with a team of community members, establish a global connection with others, and provide sustainability for the project. The Gold Award, an individual honor and the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, is earned by high school Girl Scouts who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through remarkable Take Action projects that have sustainable impact in their communities and beyond. Earning the Gold Award is a rewarding process that calls for leadership at the highest level. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. They are our future, and our future looks bright! The Silver Award is earned by Girl Scout Cadettes in grades 6–8. Girls work in small groups of four or fewer to complete a project that impacts their community in a lasting way. The Bronze Award is the highest award earned by Girl Scout Juniors. This award challenges girls to work together as a group to make a positive impact for their community. The girls listed in this booklet completed their highest award achievements between March 1, 2019, and March 1, 2020.
The Girl Scout community is immensely proud of the exceptional young women who have earned one of Girl Scouts’ Highest Awards this year. They are leaders among their peers and in the community. We hope you will take inspiration from their accomplishments and share it with others. Their work has made a difference for so many throughout the world.
Unfortunately, due to the unprecedented circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to host in-person celebrations for our Highest Awards Girl Scouts this spring. A virtual celebration was hosted in May and the recording can be found at girlscoutsofcolorado.org/highest-awards.

Elizabeth Bannister, DenverThinking Outside the Box
By creating a workshop for middle school-aged girls, Elizabeth brought awareness and promoted the conversation of gender bias and how women can break out of that box. The workshop included successful female athletes who spoke about their experience, along with stations addressing inequality through athletics, workplaces, on the international stage, and our own implicit biases. She also created an interactive website and blog to encourage
other communities to host similar events.
Elizabeth was proud to raise awareness on a topic she is passionate about while supporting the next generation of influential women. Earning the Gold Award made Elizabeth a better leader and gave her the professional confidence to set her up for success in her future.
Kaitlyn Barto, Colorado SpringsMap It Out!
To address a lack of exciting and engaging geography curriculum for students at Peyton Elementary School, Kaitlyn created an interactive national map that is accompanied by a full curriculum for teachers. To accompany her curriculum and activities, Kaitlyn and her team painted a colorful map of the United States on the school’s playground blacktop. She then educated teachers and parents about how to best use her lesson plans and activities and
shared them outside of her community. The teachers love the curriculum and will be using her program for years to come.
Since she was a Girl Scout Daisy, Kaitlyn has been learning about kindness, leadership, and giving back, and in completing her Gold Award, she was able to apply everything she learned. Through the course of her Gold Award, Kaitlyn learned that she is capable of more than she realized.
2019–2020 Gold Award Girl Scouts
Holli Acree, Grand JunctionCommunity School Clothing Swap
To promote environmentally friendly practices within the fashion industry, Holli created a community and schoolwide annual clothing swap. Through her events, she promoted awareness of the widespread pollution within the industry and created a community service club run by seventh grade girls that will run the swap, along with other awareness events, every year.
Holli was able to create lasting change in her community and promote environmental stewardship through confidence and active leadership, skills that she built during her Gold Award process and will take to all of her future endeavors.
Lakin Altman, Colorado SpringsBaby Bundles
Lakin noticed a need within the veteran community of low-resource mothers needing items to help them raise their children. To address this, she organized a donation drive and put together boxes of essential baby items, such as diapers, wash cloths, blankets, bibs, wipes, and bottles. The items were distributed by Family Life Services in Colorado Springs. Lakin also created a resource guide, which will continue to be distributed by local OBGYNs, with additional
local resources for new mothers.
Lakin feels that because of her Gold Award she can lead with a better understanding of others, something that she knows will help her in future school and professional endeavors. In the process of earning her Gold Award, Lakin put together all of the skills she has been building through her years of Girl Scouts and showed she believes in herself!

Christine Bolt, Steamboat SpringsCamp Bloom
Through her own Girl Scout experience and love of attending summer camp, Christine noticed that these opportunities are not always available for kids with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or other differences, so she created Camp Bloom. Camp Bloom is a progressive and immersive camp experience for differently abled children and provides less potential for anxiety than a neurotypical setting, while still providing campers with valuable outdoor
experience. Christine partnered with the Yampa Valley Autism Program and Big Agnes to continue to run her camp and provide equipment.
Christine’s Gold Award journey opened her eyes to the community around her and affirmed that she is capable to make a positive influence on the world. She learned to be confident in her choices, lead with positivity, and always be proud of herself.
Bianca Bryant, DivideGolden Meadows Dog Park
After discussion of the development of a dog park in the Woodland Park community for more than 15 years, Bianca was frustrated that nothing had been done, so she took action. With two years of hard work, she was able to lobby the city and gain support from community leaders. Bianca then completed the task of raising more than $50,000 to build and develop a functioning dog park. She also partnered with the local Parks & Recreation Department,
which will continue to maintain the park.
Bianca learned perseverance through her Gold Award project, and that she is capable of big things. She knows now that she is capable of solving big problems with her leadership skills, which will be important for her future career.
Blakeley Bennett, Colorado SpringsCollaboration for Coexistence
Blakeley created a two-part workshop for middle school- and high school-aged students to spread awareness of the human vs. environment conflict on local and global scales. The workshop not only raised awareness of the issue, but also empowered students to create solutions that can be implemented in their daily lives. She partnered with the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to develop and sustain her workshop in the future and was able to run a pilot program at
their national Youth Leadership in Conservation Conference last summer.
Blakeley feels that her Gold Award project is something she will build upon in her career to help make a difference in the world of conservation. Being a Girl Scout for most of her life has helped Blakely believe she can make a difference in the world.
Kate Bleyle, Highlands RanchCreate, Compose, Communicate
Kate noticed a need for more diverse writing programs, in addition to reading programs, to address the issue of diversity in Colorado. She created an innovative creative writing curriculum to encourage K-12 students to write about their passions and interests. In addition to sharing her program with many local libraries for free, she also partnered with Boys & Girls Club locations that will have college volunteers teach her creative writing curriculum every summer.
As a naturally shy person, Kate felt the Gold Award helped her break out of her shell both personally, and professionally. This helped her develop leadership skills and confidence that she will use for the rest of her life.

2019–2020 Gold Award Girl Scouts
Devyn Dhieux, Evergreen Reusable Feed Bags
Devyn noticed that many people in her community use animal feed bags that were being thrown away and found a way to repurpose them into reusable bags. She developed a how-to manual with a sewing pattern to create the reusable totes that she shared with local sewing groups. Then, she created an efficient system in which community members can drop off their used feed sacks for them to be repurposed and sewn into reusable totes, which are donated
to the local food bank for shoppers to use.
Devyn grew a tremendous amount through her Gold Award journey by learning many valuable life skills and showing courage at every turn. Through her project, she was able to make a huge impact on the environment and those in need in her community.
Emma Downing, Colorado SpringsToys for TESSA
Emma knew that she wanted to work with her local shelter for women and children, TESSA, and discovered that the children who come to the shelter often have very few personal items and nowhere to store them. To address this, she installed personal lockers, created welcome letters for the children, completely remodeled the play area, and created an overall more welcoming environment for children in tough situations.
Earning her Gold Award has made Emma a more aware and active citizen of her community and the world. The process has given her the tools and confidence to act on her ideas and shown her that she can accomplish whatever she sets her mind to.
Gabriella Bynum, WardCold Frames for Jamestown Elementary
Right before the Colorado flood in 2013, Gabriella’s former school, Jamestown Elementary, built a greenhouse that was destroyed. She was inspired to help her community recover from disaster and lead a team of volunteers to revitalize the school’s plant science program by installing cold frames. These frames, along with her curriculum, are designed to teach students about plants and their sustainability.
Through her Gold Award project, Gabriella was able to take a negative experience in her community and grow something new for a school that has meant so much to her own life. Her positivity and resilient spirit are things she will take from her Gold Award experience into all her future endeavors.
Faith Carino, Colorado Springs Band Lending Closet
Faith understood that her favorite extracurricular activity, band, was already an expensive activity for families and wanted to make it more accessible. To address this need, she created a lending closet of appropriate performance clothes for students to use for free. This mitigates the cost for a student to be in band and allows more students to participate.
Through earning her Gold Award, Faith realized her full leadership potential and how it will impact her future employment and education opportunities. She also now has a deeper connection to her community.

Renee Gangwish, BoulderFence it Up!
Inspired by her childhood in the great outdoors of Colorado, Renee knew she wanted her project to deal with environmental restoration. With the help of several volunteers and the Parks and Open Space Advisory
Committee, she restored Walker Ranch to its former glory and continues to send volunteers for further restoration.
For Renee, the passion and care she has for the environment was cultivated through her entire Girl Scout experience. Earning her Gold Award was the summation of everything she learned as a Girl Scout and taught her that with passion, hard work, and persistence it is possible to achieve great things.
Emerald Doyle, Colorado SpringsOne Nation Donation Food Drives
Inspired by her own experience as an orphan until she was 11 years old, Emerald heard about the issue of poverty on Native American reservations in the United States and wanted to do something. She partnered with the One Nation Walking Together to create a sustainable pipeline of donated food and feminine hygiene products from her community to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, an area recently ravaged by devastating floods. Emerald
inspired her community, and collected feminine products, furniture, and 5,000 pounds of food.

Joslyn Hays, GunnisonMarbles Kiosk
The game of marbles is an important part of the culture of Joslyn’s community and life and she wanted to share the pastime with others. Through the program, she was able to introduce many new
players to the game of marbles.

Fiona Goe, DenverThe Informed Voters Project
Interested in politics herself, Fiona noticed a lack of informed voters within her own peer groups and wanted to do something about it. In partnership with the civics department at her high school, the survey will continue to be maintained and given to high school students for years to come.
Completing the award put all her Girl Scout skills into action. Fiona had been dreaming of earning her Gold Award since she was 11 years old, and she felt it was an incredible accomplishment to join the prestigious club of Gold Award Girl Scouts.

Abby wanted to share her love of music and participating in the school band with younger students who are more likely to drop out band programs before high school. She developed a mentorship program, connecting high school students with elementary students to help them practice their instrument in-person regularly. Her program saw a tangible impact in the first year because many more students decided to continue with band and her school will continue
sending high school mentors.
Abby’s project combined many of the skills she learned since she was a Daisy and was a remarkable opportunity to put all her Girl Scout skills into action. During her Gold Award project, she also acquired new leadership skills, which she can use for the rest of her life.

In partnership with the Town of Parker, the trail will be physically maintained, and the stories will be rotated by the Ponderosa High School National Honor Society to ensure readers can return regularly and read a new story.
Earning her Gold Award helped Avery learn how to dissect complex problems and come up with creative solutions. She believes that without being in Girl Scouts since she was a Daisy and earning her Gold Award, she would never have reached the success that she has had, and will continue to have, in her life.
Teagan Keeler, Colorado SpringsFort Carson Discovery
Teagan noticed her community museum, the Fort Carson History Museum, was mostly geared toward adults and not kids. By earning her Gold Award, Teagan was able to demonstrate leadership, passion and perseverance while giving back to her own community in a sustainable way. Madelyn Letendre, MonumentThe Buddies Club
Madelyn began working with differently abled students at her school during her sophomore year and noticed these students were often left out of after-school activities and other social outings, so she sprang into action to create “Buddies Club.” The club is a self- sustaining group at her school that promotes social events and activities for all students, including the differently abled, to enrich their lives and foster greater acceptance for all within her community.

Alexandra Lanucha, DivideCity Above the Clouds Satellite Library
Alexandra noticed in her community of Divide, elementary schools started to see preschoolers lacking the six early literacy skills needed for later success in reading and writing. To address this and promote literacy in kids, she partnered with the Rampart Library District, community partners in Teller County, and Summit Elementary School to create a satellite library and reading program for the community. Every three months the library rotates the
books and maintains the satellite library, and the library has been implemented into many different local education programs.

In addition to online resources and multiple peer support groups that she implemented, the H.O.P.E. program includes a visual aid through bracelets to help teenagers know they are not alone in their feelings. The bracelets are double-sided and help students express if they are OK and open to being approached by someone who may need to talk, or if
they are not OK and could use someone to talk with. The bracelets are being used in school communities and continue helping students express themselves and promote mental health awareness.

An annual cash award of $500 will be given to girls in Chaffee County who have earned a Gold Award.
Kay Rugeley Shaw Gold TravelshipThe Kay Rugeley Shaw Gold Travelship provides Colorado Gold Award Girl Scouts assistance with travel beyond their home community in celebration of the Gold Award. Alumna Kay Shaw established this fund in 2015 to celebrate the tremendous accomplishments of Gold Award Girl Scouts and ensure girls and families around the state can celebrate together.
Christine Bolt awarded Stephanie A. Foote Leadership Prize
For her Gold Award project, Christine addressed the lack of outdoor and summer camp programming available to kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Through her love of attending Girl Scout summer camp, she was passionate about making these experiences available and adapted for children of all abilities, so she created Camp Bloom. Camp Bloom is a free, progressive and immersive camp experience for children with autism and provides less potential for anxiety than a neurotypical setting, while still providing campers with valuable outdoor experience. Christine partnered with the Yampa Valley Autism Program and Big Agnes to continue to run her camp and provide equipment.
Christine said earning the Gold Award has been an extremely important part of her Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
“This project taught me to open my eyes and look at the world around me,” she wrote. “To affirm my role in the community and show me how I may influence those around me, and influence my sister Girl Scouts.”
Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable.
“Forevermore, I will be able to say that I accomplished something (earning the Gold Award) that I am genuinely proud of,” Christine wrote.
Stephanie Foote, president and CEO of Girl Scouts of Colorado, said Christine’s project is a prime example of how Gold Award Girl Scouts make meaningful and lasting change on their communities.
“Christine combined her love of the outdoors and camping with her passion for helping others and created a needed experience for children with autism,” she said. “The impact she made on those children will have a lasting effect, and more will be able to have this experience as her program lives on.
The Stephanie A. Foote Leadership Prize selection committee also chose an Honorable Mention:
Julia Trujillo, Arvada, “Free & Accessible Menstrual Products in Schools”. Julia created a legislative action committee through her school’s Intersectional Feminist Club that lobbies the Colorado state legislature to end period poverty and stigma by providing access to menstrual products to students in Colorado Title One schools.

2019–2020 Bronze Award Girl Scouts
You have touched the future
Bronze, Silver, or Gold Award Girl Scouts receive immeasurable support and encouragement from their parents, families, troop leaders, project advisors, and mentors. To all of those who have provided encouragement, support and guidance to these young women—thank you. They could not have done it without you.
The volunteer members of the regional Girl Scouts of Colorado Gold Award Committee meet across the state and work closely with each girl pursuing her Gold Award. They are dedicated to the success of each girl while encouraging her to strive for her personal best, deepen the impact of her project, and meet the standards of this prestigious award. We thank each one for the difference they make for each candidate. This year’s list includes all current Gold Award Committee members and those who have retired at some point in this awards year.
