Girls Days Out in

Holland Michigan! April 29-May 1, 2020

It’s time for our Girls Days adventures again! This year, we will be traveling to Holland, Michi-gan to view the quaint town and experience the beautiful tulips right before their annual Tulip Festival. We should get to see all of the beautiful tulips while avoiding the worst of the crowds!

After a half day drive to get to the Dutch village, we will take a few hours to explore the historic and vibrant downtown shopping district and grab a bite for lunch (on your own). Home to more than 100 boutiques, galleries, brew pubs and eateries, downtown Holland is known for an abundance of shopping, live music, international fair trade items and your choice of chic downtown cafes, tucked amongst a mix of locally-owned retailers and businesses. Next, we continue on to Windmill Gardens. Stroll the 36 acres of beautifully manicured grounds! Explore the gardens, dikes and canals, take a ride on a hand-painted Dutch carousel, enjoy music from an antique Amsterdam street organ, and shop for Dutch souvenirs in the Dutch “village” themed gift store. Be sure to tour the 250 year old DeZwaan Windmill, the only authentic Dutch windmill operating in the United States! After making a quick stop at our hotel, The Doubletree by Hilton, to check in and freshen up, we will continue on to din-ner at the Beechwood Grill. Here we will enjoy a traditional Dutch feast, served family style. We will sample Metwurst (a Dutch sausage), Dutch Crusted Chicken, Sweet and Sour Cabbage, Hutspot (mashed root vegetable blend of potato, carrot and onion), Dutch Saucijsjes (pigs in blankets) and Dutch Apple Pie Bars. The meal also includes a tossed salad, dinner rolls and non-alcoholic beverages. After such an event filled day, we will return to our hotel to enjoy some much needed rest before our next day of adven-ture begins! Day two starts out with an included breakfast at our hotel. Our first stop will be at the Holland Bowl Mill. One of the last of its kind in America, Holland Bowl Mill makes solid hardwood bowls and various wooden products of the highest quality. Each piece is lovingly hand carved, sanded and finished by skilled artisans like it was done more than one hun-dred years ago. We will receive a tour of the factory and have time to visit their beautiful showroom. We will then continue on to the Cappon & Settler’s Homes. The historic Cappon House was the home of Holland’s first mayor and local tannery proprietor, Isaac Cappon. Built in 1874, it is now partially restored to its appearance in 1900. Here you will step back in time, immersing

yourself in the stories of Isaac Cappon and his large family. The his-toric Settlers House is a small family home that was lived in by a se-ries of working class families over the course of its long history. Built around 1867, the building survived the Great Holland Fire of 1871 and was continuously lived in until the 1990s. Today, the home has been restored to how it would have appeared in 1871. Next on the agenda, Nelis’ Dutch Village. Lunch will be on your own here at the Hungry Dutch-

man Café, where a variety of Dutch dishes and American favorites can be purchased. Then, step back in time at this theme park reproduction of an 1800’s Dutch Village and enjoy Dutch architecture, canals and gardens. Learn a few steps of Holland’s traditional “klompen” dance and watch arti-sans make cheese.

After a brief stop back at the hotel, we will continue to enjoy a two hour dinner cruise on the Holland Princess, a 65’ Victorian style river boat. The cruise will take us through beautiful Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan and cruise past the Big Red lighthouse. For dinner, we will enjoy BBQ chicken, fried shrimp, potatoes, salad, fresh fruit, rolls, cheesecake and chocolate cake. A cash bar is also available.

We will again return to our home away from home for another restful evening.

Day 3 begins once again with an included breakfast at the hotel. Then, we are off to the Veldheer Tulip Farm, Holland’s only tulip farm and the DeKlomp Shoe Factory. In the spring, visitors can see as many as four million tulips in bloom along with thousands of daffodils, crocus and hyacinths. All varieties of bulbs are available for purchase. Also on the property is the DeKlomp Wooden Shoe & Delftware Factory. Watch as wooden shoes are carved from a block of poplar wood on machines imported from the Netherlands. Follow Delftware production from the pouring of liquid clay into molds, firing in the kiln, and talking to the artists as they hand-paint the signature blue Dutch designs in the only Delft-ware production facility in North America. Following our busy morning, we will board the bus to begin our journey home. Along the way, we will stop at Ander-son Winery for lunch, a tasting and tour. Be ready to make your lunch selection when you register. Choices include: Strawberry/Pecan/Feta Cheese Salad (Mixed greens, grilled chicken breast with raspberry vinaigrette dressing) Chef Salad (Meat & cheese strips, hard boiled egg, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion & croutons with Ranch dressing) Emmi Roth Signature Cheese Board (Assortment of 4 cheeses served with nuts, dried fruit, crackers, etc.) Grilled Chicken Sandwich (Onion mayo, grilled pepper strips, gouda cheese on focaccia roll with chips on the side) Then it’s on to our final stop, Albanese Candy Factory. For over 30 years Albanese has been making the World's Best Gummies & Candies right here in the United States. You will have a chance to browse their factory store and purchase items to take home with you! At last, we will return home with fond memories of our experiences at the Dutch Vil-lage of Holland and our time spent with our dear girlfriends.
