SOFIA GEISLINGERINTERN

Grade: 11th

Passions and hobbies:I really love to read and play sports. I play field hockey and lacrosse. Also, I started a community club called She’s The First. And I play the violin with the DC Youth Orchestra program.

Why it is important for me to be a part of GIT:I would love the opportunity to be an intern for the Girls in Technology DC program! By learning what it takes to lead and plan programs, I think that later in my life I could potentially start a similar program in another state or country so that more girls can be exposed to STEM and be mentored by experienced professionals. I think that GIT is a wonderful opportunity for girls in the District of Columbia and I would love to be a part of its community. It is wonderful that many girls have taken advantage of the program and the benefits that it offers. Hopefully their interest in the STEM field deepens and helps diversify the workplace. An intern experience with the GIT program would be unlike any I have ever had and would expose me to the leadership and planning qualities needed to run such a life changing program in DC.

VICTORIA R. DUARTE PROGRAM COORDINATOR

Position: Security Analyst Awards: Certificate of Appreciation for 2008 Presidential Inauguration

Passions and hobbies:I love to try new restaurants and try to copycat their recipes and enjoy creating my own dishes. I enjoy the outdoor activities such as sports, rock climbing, and hiking. Finally, I love construction, for 2 reasons:

1 - The idea of taking wood and nails and building something out of nothing makes me feel that I can do anything..2 - Stereotypes only exist because we let them exist.

Why it is important for me to be a part of GIT:I would like to have these young girls grow up powerful and positive and feeling secure in themselves. Learning to take action and making positive choices about their life. Encouraging them to think about the world around them and doing positive things for others. These young ladies will grow up with an “I can” attitude.

JOHN OHPROGRAM COORDINATOR

Position: Congressional Budget AnalystUndergraduate: St. John’s University, Criminology & Business

Passions and hobbies:• I bike at least 20 miles every weekend• Computer programming• Environmental science• Traveling

Why it is important for me to be a part of GIT:So, let’s address the obvious that my sister is the Chair of the GIT DC program. And I’ll state another obvious, that behind every successful woman, is a great brother. She is very passionate about the program, and she is my role model and the most supportive person in my life in helping me develop professionally and personally. It’s my turn to support her. Last year, she coined #GITGuy – that is the David Goldbergs behind the Sheryl Sandbergs. That is far from the culture we grew up in, and so I’m taking a lesson on leaning in, and how to help others lean in. This will benefit my future professional and personal interactions, I’m sure. I’ll be the #GITGuy doing things behind the scenes to ensure the program runs smoothly.

JENNY OHGIT DC CHAIR

Position: IT Strategist, and Media ProducerUndergraduate: University of Maryland, FinanceGraduate: University of Maryland, Information Technology ManagementCertifications: PMP, ITIL, Television ProductionAwards: 2016 Washington DC Women in Technology Leadership Award

Passions and hobbies: advocating professional development and education for women, youth, and minorities, digital media, biking, traveling, art, always learning new things

Why it is important for me to be a part of GIT: I grew up (almost) perfect. Amazing grades and so utterly responsible. But there was no real world instruction on how I'd navigate college, or how to choose a career. I was told it didn’t really matter because, getting married would solve everything, and because I’m smart, I’ll always be okay. But I am not the type to be okay with just okay. I didn’t have much of a support system in my early adult years. I had to learn how to be independent and had to work super hard to accomplish things I wanted. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted. Or even if I was allowed. I’ve also seen so much gender injustice all over the world through my travels. I believe that collectively, we can make a difference that will resonate generations to come. I want other girls to know that anything is possible, if only they allow themselves to believe in it. The women of GIT are here to help girls dream a bigger dream, as well as show them how to take action to make those dreams a reality. I know life can be challenging when no one supports you. GIT is a tremendous support system to help navigate your opportunities!
