DESCRIPTION

The Center for GIS at Towson University has been partnering with Professor Todd Kenreich on GIS Day projects that enhance local K-12 schools’ curriculum by introducing the practical application of GIS. In 2009 and 2010 we took GIS to the Crossroads School in Baltimore to help students build a mapping component into their “Newcomers Guide to Fells Point.” The project brought together GIS professionals and 7th grade students during a visit to the Towson University campus. This presentation will summarize the project and explore the way we were able to utilize freely available resources to create a map of places in Fells Point that the students think are important for newcomers to know about. The presentation will walk through the same steps the students learned, discuss improvements made to the previous year’s project, and provide views of the finished map.

GIS Day 2010• Using Google Maps, CGIS helped

create a mapping component of the Newcomer’s Guide– First we created a generic gmail

account for the school– Then a document of simple step by

step instructions for the students to follow to make the map
