User requests for CPC products in GIS format are rapidly increasing.

CPC & National Integrated Drought Info System (NIDIS): CPC products are heavily used in the preparation of the US Drought Monitor. The USDM authors need CPC data in GIS format.

CPC & The NOAA Climate Services: Prepare CPC products for dissemination via the Climate Services portal.

The Famine Early Warning SystemThe Famine Early Warning System (FEWS) Program (FEWS) Program

• CPC has the lead in developing the “Weekly Weather Hazards” for Africa, Central America, Hispaniola and Afghanistan.

• GIS allows CPC to import data from our various partner agencies around the world (e.g., refugee camps, roads, locations of agriculture, etc) to ensure a more accurate analysis.

• CPC’s users can import CPC’s GIS data into their systems to better identify areas in need of humanitarian aid.

• This assessment is based on the current atmospheric/oceanic state and uses the forecasted evolution of the MJO as input.

• The 1 and 2-week outlook predicts areas of enhanced/ suppressed rainfall and also regions where conditions favor tropical cyclone development for the global tropics.

• Product developed using ArcMap/ArcInfo

• Two ArcGIS Servers have been installed on the NOAA/WOC

• CPC plans to start development on the WOC in June/July 2010 and transfer products that are currently available via the GeoServer to the ArcGIS Server

• Shapefiles are currently created using IDL, but soon the newest version of GrADS will be used to create the shapefiles

• GrADS will be the primary software to create CPC GIS layers (Shapefile and GeoTIFF).
