DAIRY CATTLE March Cogent Dairy show and sale. Kirkham farmerHarry Gardner took the top price today at £2220 for a smart black heifergiving 35 litres which was claimed by John Pickervance, Brindle.Winner of the commercial heifer class was Eric Armer who also cameclose at £2200 to MJ Kenyon, Chipping. The champion heifer camefrom WA Booth, Feizor by Bassingthorpe Bossman and was a fineexample of a modern Holstein heifer with a very deep pedigree, she soldat £2100 also Mr Pickervance. The shippon was full of milky heifersand there was no let up in trade with five over £2000 and five over£1900. Older cows still in demand with the cull price rising again withthird and fourth calvers between £700 - £900. There was no let up intrade with many buyers going home with empty trailers which should bebe very encouraging for anyone thinking of selling up.

Champion The Moore family-Laura, Robbie and Maisie with their champion Beltex shearlings and lambswhich sold for £192 alongside Jake Lakin of WE Jameson & Son, pre-sale show sponsors.

Gisburn Auction Marts spring show and sale of ewes and lambs at foot last Saturday saw a very impressive635 head forward which attracted a large ringside crowd. WE Jameson & Son, animal feed suppliers ofMasham kindly sponsored the pre-sale show, which was very capably judged by beef and sheep farmer-Robert Towers, Farleton. The Moore family from Triangle near Halifax were awarded the champion rosettewith their pair of Beltex cross shearlings with single lambs at foot which sold for £192 or £96 a life to SE Coar,Riley Green, Preston. However, it was Lampkin family of Silsden, better known internationally as worldchampions in the sport of Motocross that topped the sale at £262, with their Texel shearlings with twins atfoot. The much anticipated first appearance of the season from regular York vendor, Chris Craven did notdisappoint, when he sold his smart Texel ewes with twins lambs at foot for £245 and Texel ewes with singlelambs at foot for £170 a family or £85 a life. Generally, the Mule ewes with lambs at foot on offer did not haveyouth on their side, with the majority broken mouthed. However, those with twins sold regularly in the £160 -£170 bracket. Whilst the majority of twin Texel families sold in excess of £200 and Suffolk crosses justbelow. The packed ringside crowd, created a flurry of bids when the 33 spare lambs came under thehammer, selling to a high of £30 to average £14.70. Demand for in-lamb sheep continued with ewes scannedfor twins selling between £120-£140 range. Even this late on in the season, buyers for a whole range of storehoggs were present. Topping this section at £108 was a smart pen of Texel hoggs from Cheshire, down to abottom of £29 for some longer keep Herdwicks sent down from the Lake District.Auctioneers Richard Turner & Son
