Greenway’s Educators Rising organized a campus-wide book drive. These new and gently used books have been distributed to Acacia, Ironwood, and Sunburst elementary schools, which are the feeder schools in the Greenway area.
On Nov. 16, the annual book talk night, Greenway Reads, was held. Demon faculty and staff volun-teered their time to read a book of their choice and then held discussions with students. Being able to discuss books as a group is beneficial to
the reading and learning process and it promotes a positive reading environment. It also provides students with reading role models, gives students options for reading materi-als, makes reading fun, and gives an opportunity for students and adults to connect
through reading. Reading is vital for school success and the Greenway staff wanted to model this for their high school. Thank you to all who helped make this event a success.
In October, school letter grades were released by the Arizona Department of Education. Greenway has received a preliminary ranking of “A.” The rankings grade the quality of schools on an A - F scale. While half of high schools’ grades depend on how their stu-dents test on AzMERIT, the rest of their school rankings are calculated through gradua-tion rates and several other indicators of how they are preparing students for post-secondary careers. We are very proud of our achievement, and we fully realize our suc-cess is not possible without your support. We know that behind every successful stu-dent is a caring parent or guardian.
Make the difference with
your tax credit donation,
an additional giving option
that will benefit our stu-
dents.
In October, each badminton player teamed up with a Greenway staff member and played an exciting round-robin tournament organized by Varsity Badmin-ton Head Coach, Heather McDonald.
This annual event was in its 10th year of play and every year we have a blast.
All 23 teams gave it their blood, sweat, and tears and were extremely competitive with each other. We are all awaiting for next year to send those birdies flying.
ELL STUDENT SUCCESS - Senior, Nathan Werdy Congratulations!
Senior, Nathan Werdy has been selected as an Arizona ELL Student Success Story for the 2017 OELAS Conference. Of the dozens of applications that were submitted and received by the committee,
only four were selected as winners. The selection committee was im-pressed with Nathan’s dedication to English language acquisition, academics, and personal growth. The award ceremony was held on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Hotel in Tucson. With his brother and parents in at-tendance, he received his well-deserved award and was given a short introduction of his accomplish-ments from Principal Mr. Jon Vreek-en. Nathan gave a wonderful speech and we are all extremely proud of our Demon student success and we are looking forward to what future mountains he will climb.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
An additional giving option that will ben-efit your student and the students of the Glendale Union High School District is through a tax credit donation through the state of Arizona.
Arizona law provides a tax credit for monetary contributions to public schools which support extracurricular activities and character education programs.
You can help students, while possibly lowering your tax bill, by making a donation. The state tax credit is available to all qualifying individual Arizona state taxpayers. You do not need have to have a child enrolled in a school to take advantage of this state tax credit.
There are five different school tax credits that an individ-ual may be eligible to claim, so it is always best to consult
a tax adviser to learn if you qualify for the dollar-for-dollar credit.
A tax credit is different from a deduction because you may subtract the whole contribution from the amount of taxes that you may owe the state of Arizona.
An individual may contribute as much as $200, and a couple filing jointly may contribute as much as $400 and receive the money back in the form of a tax credit.
Tax credit donations can be made online. Visit greenway.guhsdaz.org. Look to the left on the front page of the website and choose ‘Tax Credit Contribution.’
Your donation will make a difference in the life of a student in Arizona. Thank you!

GREENWAY Elective Fair
2017 In November 1, we organized our annual Electives
Fair, just in time for the freshman educational and ca-
reer meetings with our academic counselors.
Students had the opportunity to walk around campus
and discover all the different types of courses we offer
and to meet other teachers and student leaders. We
have such a variety of different electives for students
to experience and learn from, including choir, restau-
rant management and digital media and theatre.
At Greenway, we are proud of what we do every day
with our students and we want them to know what is
available during their four years as a Demon.
If you have any questions, please call your student’s
academic counselor at 623-915-8502 to schedule an
appointment.
The Greenway High School chapter
for Key Club is always busy making
a difference in their community.
With every opportunity, our club
strives to make a difference.
The most recent event that they
participated in was assisting the
Woodmark Senior
Living Center in Sun
City.
The students
were there from
the beginning to
the end, from hanging
up decorations to
setting tables and chairs
to serving refreshments and
playing music. Even dancing with
the guests.
Last month, our students and the
advisor of Key Club, Jose Morales,
visited the chapel on Luke Air Force
Base to assist them in one of their
functions with our service men and
women. For those military families,
our students provide the hospitality
needs which include setup before
the event and tear down afterwards.
Key Club also continues
with their support for
the working poor at
the South Phoenix St.
Vincent de Paul Dining
Room. The student vol-
unteers prepare, serve and set-
up the dining room. After dinner
and dessert, the children get to
work at a craft table, read with
the students, or receive extra
help and tutoring in Math and
English homework.

Community Service = Greenway
The Annual Greenway Athletic Department Community
Service Project was held in October. Over 85 student
athletes volunteered their time to help raise funds to
support the fight against ALS. Everyone did a great job
as they lined the entire course cheering and
encouraging all who participated both in the short and
long courses.
Great job, Demons!
FACULTY
FOLLIES
Over 30 of the Demon staff
were involved in this year’s
Faculty Follies night. With over
10 different acts, we provided
over an hour of great enter-
tainment and made the crowd
smile. Below is a picture of our
administrative team as the
rock group KISS.
