A MESSAGE FrOM NAT SAlTONSTAll

ACA New England’s President of the Board

Nat Saltonstall

In addition to Halloween and the notable absence of the Red Sox from the playoffs, this past October and early November included

two significant events for ACA New England that are important to highlight. Both are notable for their positive impact on our association and progress towards carrying out our current strategic priorities of growth, diversification of our fiscal model, and collaboration with ACA National.

First, as you’ll learn more about throughout this issue of Communicate, our first Camp Champions Celebration was a tremendous success. Fenway Park provided the ideal backdrop for an energetic evening in honor of June and Eliot Tatelman and to raise significant campership dollars. Our campership fund can now dramatically increase its impact on at-risk youth by providing experiences at ACA-accredited day and resident camps throughout New England. In addition, the event raised the public visibility of ACA New England and introduced many new individuals, organizations, and businesses to the important work of our association on behalf of camps and children.

Second, on October 20, the Board of Directors voted in favor of becoming an affiliate of ACA National. As you may recall, ACA has undergone a re-organization over the past two years with the goal of creating a unified national association that speaks with a more powerful voice. While the majority of Sections across the country have “rolled up” and consolidated as part of ACA National, we are one of three Sections (along with New York/New Jersey and Illinois) that has chosen to maintain an affiliate relationship. This agreement preserves our independence, yet enables us to work with ACA in a positive and mutually beneficial way towards our shared goal of serving the public and our membership, acting much like the charter agreement that has been in place for many years. We will continue to offer high quality service here in New England lead by our team of talented and knowledgeable staff. At the same time, we will benefit from ACA initiatives underway at the national level including the new Professional Development Center, a strong and growing public policy presence in Washington DC, and membership and customer growth.

ACA New England continues to grow and thrive as we position ourselves to increase both the quality and quantity of services we provide to our membership and the public. Have a happy Thanksgiving holiday.

THE 91ST ANNUAl CONFErENCEMArCH 30-31, 2012

The 91st Annual Conference is only four months away. Can you believe it? We can’t wait to see you all in Manchester for another great weekend, but until then we wanted to fill you in on some of the details.

ACA New England is pleased to announce MICHAEl THOMpSON, pH.D

as the keynote speaker for the91st Annual Conference.

Michael Thompson, Ph.D. is a consultant, author and psychologist specializing in children and families. He is the supervising psychologist for the Belmont Hill School and has worked in more than five hundred schools across the United States, as well as in international schools in Central America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

He and his co-author, Dan Kindlon, wrote the New York Times best-selling book, Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys (Ballantine Books, 1999). Thompson has written many other books on raising children. About his book Best Friends/Worst Enemies the Publishers Weekly review declared, “Not since Dr. Spock and Penelope Leach has there been such a sensitive and practical guide to raising healthy children.” He is presently writing a new book about summer camps and schools trips entitled, Homesick and Happy: How Children Change and Grow When They Are Away from Their Parents.

A dedicated speaker and traveler, Michael Thompson has appeared on The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, ABC 20/20, CBS 60 Minutes, The Early Show and Good Morning America. He has been quoted in numerous national publications and has been a guest on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” “Talk of the Nation,” and the Diane Rhem Show. He wrote, narrated and hosted a two-hour PBS documentary entitled “Raising Cain” that was broadcast nationally in 2006.

Dr. Thompson serves on the board of the American Camping Association and is on the Advisory Board of Parent Magazine.

HOMESICK AND HAppyHow Children Grow and Change When They Are

Away from Their Parents In the US today, we have a generation of adults who are dedicated to doing a great job of parenting. They want to produce healthy, happy children who are athletically skilled, socially accepted and academically successful. There is nothing wrong with these parental ambitions. However, there is an assumption that this kind of embedded parenting always adds psychological value. Yet, there are actually many times when parental absence is the magic ingredient for a child and especially for a teenager. In this talk, Dr. Thompson will explain how the greatest maturation in childhood occurs when children are away from their parents. It will describe the experiences, excitement, fears and growth of situations away from home, especially in summer camps, that bring him to his conclusions.

ACA New England’s inaugural Camp Champions Celebration at Fenway Park’s State Street Pavilion was by all accounts an enormous success. The evening of November 2nd found three hundred friends and fans of the summer camp experience in New England celebrating! Highlights of the evening included tours of Fenway Park with Red Sox official tour guides, photos with the 2007 World Series Trophy (which was accompanied by two guards), a memorable speech from a fourth grade campership recipient from summer 2011, and the presentation of ACA New England’s first Camp Champions Award to June and Eliot Tatelman for their inspirational work at Camp Miracles & Magic.

The excellent work of our Camp Champions Committee, led by Jeff Hacker, owner/director of Camp Cedar in Casco, ME, brought together so many people who really care about summer camp and about providing camp experiences to children who otherwise wouldn’t have access to them. Special thanks go to our generous event sponsors, particularly Bunk1, our Home Run Sponsor. We are equally grateful to all the donors who made this evening possible—ticket donors, auction donors, and Campership Fund donors! And, to all the folks who attended the celebration and bid on the fabulous auction items, we send many thanks!

Expect the Camp Champions Celebration to happen again next year! We are busy collecting links to all the media outlets that ran our photos. Boston Magazine recently posted this link to photography; stay tuned for others.

STATE ASSOCIATION NEWS

MASSACHUSETTS (MCA)

Legislative News

Bill to Require Lifejackets for All Swimmers in Non-Pool Swim Areas. The Massachusetts Camping Association supports the safety of children in camps and works with the MA Department of Public Health on regulations that govern licensed camps in MA. We also monitor legislative issues. One of the bills we have been following

recently passed through the Senate and has been referred to the

House Ways and Means Committee. The bill, “An Act to Improve Water Safety for Children in the Commonwealth” (Senate bill 2075) would require all camps to have a lifejacket for every minor that is present in a non-pool swimming area. You may wish to read the exact language of the bill Here. The bill is a result of a tragic drowning at a Municipal Camp in 2007. We support child protection and safety issues, but are unsure of the practicality of the bill as written - specifically regarding whether it could be implemented properly. We are also concerned about unintended consequences of the requirements, such as expanding to encompass swimming areas. There is no question that lifejackets are necessary and needed in boats, but some research may be required to determine whether the approach in Senate bill 2075 is necessary, appropriate and would actually improve child safety. We will be reaching out to members of the House and Senate to provide information and perhaps language that might assist them in creating a bill that can be implemented and regulated. We are currently drafting sample letters and shortly will be asking camps to send letters of support to their legislators. The MCA Legislative committee is also working with our Lobbyist to set up meetings with key legislators on this important legislation. Stay Tuned.

Maine Summer Camps

The Maine Youth Camping Foundation is now legally doing business as Maine Summer Camps. The name is more “user friendly” to families looking for information on Maine camps, and decreases confusion about our mission. MYCF is still the incorporated name but you will most often see us as Maine Summer Camps. (continued on p.8)

150th Anniversary of US Summer Camps

At its fall quarterly meeting, Maine Summer Camps had the distinct pleasure and honor of being presented with a framed copy of remarks made by Maine Representative Chellie Pingree in the Congressional Record, celebrating 150 years of youth camping in the US. A representative of Rep. Pingree’s office made the presentation. In her remarks to Congress on September 13, Pingree highlighted the start of summer camps in 1861, stating that “while times have changed, the purpose of summer camp has remained the same –to provide our youth with havens in which to grow and learn in nature.”

Her remarks further named historic summer camps in Maine, including Wyonegonic Camps in Denmark and Pine Island Camp in Belgrade, which both opened in 1902 and are two of the oldest continuously operating camps in the nation. Maine Summer Camps worked with the National ACA

office and Rep. Pingree’s office to bring about the 150th anniversary remarks.

IN MEMOryJUNE W. GrAy, Director of Camp Wawenock in Raymond, ME died on October 4, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME. The Wawenock Camp family extends deepest gratitude to the Gosnell House staff for their professional and compassionate care. Before her death, June’s spirit soared reading the hundreds of letters sent by wide spread members of the Camp Wawenock Family along with educators and camp leaders from near and far.

June was born in Suffolk, VA on March 5, 1936. She graduated from Suffolk High School, Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, and did graduate work at Penn State University. June taught Physical Education and Latin at the elementary, high school and college level in Richmond, VA, Pennsylvania and Portland, ME.

June was first hired as a staff member at Camp Wawenock in 1956. She served over 54 years as a cabin counselor, activity counselor, program director, Assistant Director and, in 1971, she joined Lillian and Sydney Ussher as a Director - continuing in that capacity after their deaths through the summer of 2011.

Professionally, June was recognized by Camping organizations at the state, regional and national levels for her Leadership in educational training programs for staff and new directors. As she said in a recent interview in Camping Magazine, key advice for new directors would include:

1. Always be a student2. Put down your pencils and listen to children3. You will learn that NEGATIVISM grows fast, to no avail, and IDEALISM works, albeit slowly,

for good!4. Camp is the reality of the day and the vision as far as the soul can see.5. When you are IN your purpose in life, you shine!

Each of us can give thanks for the warm acceptance of June’s smile, the energy coming from her core, the humor that was naturally a part of her being, and her sharp intellect. June’s hunger for learning shaped the training and development of staff - not only for a summer job, but for life! Most of all, we can be thankful for all June did to further the legacy of Camp Wawenock. June’s vision in introducing Andy and Catriona Sangster to Wawenock left her confident in strong and stable leadership for Camp. The Ussher Lodge, dedicated in 1990, has brought honor to the legacy of Lillian and Syd and is a center for performances, all-camp gatherings, and sharing the history of camp. A loving regard of the “place” that Wawenock is, drove June’s and Pat’s tireless efforts to secure the Wawenock Forest Land Conservation Easement, setting aside 60 of Wawenock’s 90 acres to be protected from future development, while also protecting the beautiful, clear waters of Sebago Lake. June’s legacy at Wawenock is celebrated worldwide by thousands of Wawenock campers, Staff and alumnae.

There will be a Service of Celebration for June on Sunday, August 19th at Camp Wawenock. Donations to honor June may be made to ‘The American Camp Association-Camp Wawenock Scholarship Fund’ and mailed to camp at 33 Wawenock Rd, Raymond ME 04071.
