Dear friends,

As I move into my second year of leadership with Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, I am in awe of the strong base of philanthropy in improving the health of our community.

Partnerships with our philanthropic supporters have paved the way to supporting continuing education for hundreds of nurses, enhancing programs and services to pediatric patients, providing direct financial

aid to cancer patients in need and implementing innovative new technologies and equipment that will ensure Novant Health’s highest level of remarkable care in our region. And those are just a few of the many good things that are happening.

Please accept my deepest appreciation for your dedication to Novant Health’s mission of improving healthcare, one person at a time. When we say those words, we mean them. The coming years promise exciting endeavors for Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, our foundation and our community … exciting endeavors that will change the face of healthcare in our region.

With sincere thanks,

Harry SmithNovant Health Presbyterian Medical Center president

Thank you from our president

Dear friends of Novant Health Foundation Presbyterian Medical Center,

What a privilege it is to be a part of Novant Health Foundation Presbyterian Medical Center and see, firsthand, the power your gifts have in our community. Over the last two years, you have enabled us to distribute more than $3.5 million to improve healthcare in our region. The passion that you have for making our community a healthier place to live is nothing short of remarkable.

Here are some of the things we have accomplished together:

• We launched the $60 million GroundBreaking campaign to support the construction of an outpatient heart and vascular and cancer facility.

• We contributed more than $105,000 to support Child Life programming at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital.

• We created Novant Health’s first mobile patient simulation lab and training program to educate nurses.

• We delivered more than 2,300 flower bouquets to hospice patients and their families.

• We collaborated with Speedway Children’s Charities to develop a private waiting room for family members who have a baby in our neonatal intensive care unit.

• We supported Project Life and added 1,248 North Carolina college students to the National Bone Marrow Registry.

• We dedicated a new mobile mammography unit that travels the region to corporations, community agencies and free health clinics to make early detection of breast cancer more accessible and help save lives every day.

Since 1980, together we have generated more than $80 million in charitable giving in our region. With almost 150 funds and more than $50 million in assets, your philanthropy through the Foundation can continue to support the great work that goes on every day at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center and Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital.

Please accept our deepest appreciation for your dedication and commitment to making our community a better place to live.

With gratitude,

“The generosity the John M. Belk family has shown is remarkable. Their enthusiasm underscores the tremendous need for these services in our community, and Novant Health is committed to improving access, collaboration and – ultimately – outcomes for those facing a cardiac or cancer diagnosis.”

Belk family continues to transform healthcare landscape In 1888, William Henry Belk opened his first retail store in Monroe, NC, and began the legacy that would make Belk a household name throughout the Carolinas and the South. Not everyone knows, however, that Belk left an even more special mark on the city of Charlotte. Without the generosity of William Henry Belk and the entire Belk family, Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center as we know it today would not exist. In 1903, surgeon John R. Irwin, MD, helped found Presbyterian Hospital, a 20-bed facility in what is now uptown Charlotte. By 1917, the hospital had moved and expanded to 45 beds but was quickly outgrowing its space. Irwin enlisted the help of son-in-law William Henry Belk to help the hospital purchase the former Elizabeth College property at 200 Hawthorne Lane so that it could build a much-needed new facility. The family purchased 10 acres and personally guaranteed the loan for the hospital to purchase an additional 25 acres.

William Henry Belk served as president of the hospital board of trustees from 1918 until his death in 1952. The family’s home, built on the Elizabeth College property, was donated to the hospital following the death of Mary Irving Belk in 1968 and is still part of the Presbyterian Medical Center campus today.

The Belk legacy at Presbyterian Medical Center doesn’t end with our building. William Henry’s son, John M. Belk, served on both the hospital and foundation boards. The Honorable Claudia Watkins Belk, wife of the late John M. Belk, currently serves on the Novant Health Foundation Presbyterian Medical Center board of directors.

In March 2014, the John M. Belk family continued their commitment by making a gift of $10 million to Presbyterian Medical Center to support the construction of the John M. and Claudia W. Belk Heart & Vascular Institute, a comprehensive outpatient facility. This donation is a lead gift in the $60 million capital campaign, named GroundBreaking, Presbyterian Medical Center launched to take on the nation’s number one and number two killers – cancer and heart disease.

The campaign will support the construction of an outpatient heart and vascular and cancer facility, located across the street from Presbyterian Medical Center. This new facility, the only one of its kind in the region, will enhance patient-centered care coordination, improve accessibility, increase affordability and provide leading-edge treatments for patients facing these challenging diagnoses that often require numerous appointments over the course of many months.

Presbyterian Medical Center will forever be grateful for the generosity of the John M. Belk family that will continue to transform our healthcare landscape for generations to come.

To learn more about our GroundBreaking campaign, visit NovantHealth.org/groundbreaking.

A generous gift provides a special place for families of critically ill newborns

The birth of a child should be a joyful experience. But when that child is born too early or is critically ill, the celebrations quickly turn into fear and concern.

Thanks to a $100,000 donation from Speedway Children’s Charities, families with infants in the Novant Health

Hemby Neonatal Intensive Care Unit now have a private waiting room dedicated especially to their needs. Speedway Children’s Charities made the donation in honor of Tucker Hucks, who spent five months in the Hemby NICU after being born at 24 weeks and weighing just 1 lb., 7 oz. in March of 2012. Tucker’s Room, equipped with a refrigerator, coffeemaker, couches, chairs, TV and special children’s area for siblings, provides a quiet place of respite away from the often-gleeful common area used by families awaiting the birth of healthy babies.

A portion of the $100,000 donation was also used to purchase three new isolettes for the Hemby NICU. These pieces of equipment are vital to providing a safe, stable environment for infants to grow during their NICU stay.

To learn more about ways you can give back to help patients and families during their healthcare journey, call us at 704-384-4048.

“It’s hard to be in the same room with balloons and lullabies when your baby is fighting for his life. As we left five months after our stay, we were hopeful that at some point down the road there could be a space for parents because moms and dads in the NICU need a place to go where they can collect themselves. A place to pray privately. A place to weep without trying to hide tears. A place to make calls to family, updating about triumphs and setbacks. A place to find a moment of peace from the monitors, alarms, tubes and chaos. A place to sit, pause and summon up the hope they need to walk back through those NICU doors.”

- Heather Hucks, Tucker’s mom

“By being committed to our patients, we’re also committed to our nurses. That means providing them with ample opportunities for education and training so that they can provide the highest level of care to our patients. Having this mobile simulation unit expands access to important training opportunities for nurses. We’re so grateful for this investment in nursing education!”

– Stacy Capel, RN, MSN, nursing simulation educator

Leaving a legacy for nursing education

Margaret “Jean” Norwood Culver received her nursing training at Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1942. Over time, her nursing career led her to military service and 35 years in the Active Reserve of the United States Army. Throughout those years, Culver continued her nursing career at the Atlanta Veterans Medical Center where she held various nursing administrative positions.

But Culver never forgot her time spent at Presbyterian, and upon her death in 2011, she bequeathed her estate to Novant Health Foundation Presbyterian Medical Center to benefit nursing education. This gift, received by the foundation in 2012 and 2013, totaled more than $2.85 million. Culver’s support was used in part to enhance the White Rose Nursing Education Endowed Fund to provide nursing scholarships, focusing on degrees for higher education. Culver’s generosity helped provide four scholarships in 2013 to deserving nurses, two of whom were also honored as “Culver Scholars” for their dedication to the nursing field.

This gift has also been used to create our first mobile patient simulation lab and training program. Through this hands-on training, nurses are able to practice new medical procedures and enhance current skills to better serve our patients. This learning tool reduces

safety issues, improves nursing confidence, provides unmatched hands-on experience and allows department team building through simulation exercises.

Culver’s generosity has created a legacy for her life, one that will impact nursing in this region for generations to come. Her gift is also a wonderful example of the impact a planned gift can have in the community.

To learn more about making a legacy gift to support healthcare, please call us at 704-384-4048.
