Glaciers cover approximately 11% of Iceland and they form because more snow falls in the winter than can melt in the summer. A glacier is a thick mass of ice that develops from the compaction and recrystallization of snow. The accumulation of snow and the melting of glacier ice is dependant on annual temperatures and snowfall. If a glacier has more snow than can melt for several years, the glacier may advance but if it is either very warm or does not snow enough, the glacier will retreat. Glaciers move under the force of gravity so the ice is always being pushed downhill towards its melting point, eventually making its way out to sea in a murky glacier river.Most of Iceland’s glaciers are located in the Southern Highlands due in part to the much greater precipitation in the South than in the North. Formed over thousands of years ago, Vatnajökull is by far the largest glacier in Iceland and the largest glacier mass in all of Europe. It covers an area of roughly 8,000 km2 (5,500 sq. miles) and is almost 1000m thick at its deepest point, with an average thickness of 500m and a total ice volume of 3300km3.

There are a number of large active volcanoes under the ice cap and Vatnajökull is also home to Iceland’s highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur. At 2110m (6,922 ft.) it is a popular climb for locals and visitors alike. It also provides the backdrop to our most popular trips. Like so many other glaciers around the world, rising temperatures and reduced snowfall mean that this ancient icecap is melting. A recent report from the Icelandic government’s Committee on Climate Change, warns that by the next century, Iceland’s glaciers will no longer exist. Vatnajökull is estimated to be melting at a rate of one meter per year and many of its outlet glaciers are melting at an even higher rate. The continued climate change could quicken its fate. It is amazing to experience the power of nature when you find yourself embraced by this giant ice mass. Feeling its energy and infinite strength as an eroding force makes you feel humble as never before. Getting to know Vatnajökull up close is a truly unique experience that everyone should enjoy. The Glacier Grand Slam is our most popular trip and for a good reason, you will visit the most breathtaking and inspiring nature that Vatnajökull National Park has to offer. Wander along the Fjallsjökull glacier lagoon and then onto the glacier tongue itself, where you will find yourself surrounded by spectacular ice formations and crevasses. We start each morning at 8:45 from the Glacier Guide Booking office (the cool strawbale house) in Skaftafell. The drive along the south coast will provide you with views of majestic towering mountains and rugged outlet glaciers that slowly crawl down to the lowlands from the huge Vatnajökull ice cap.

Arriving at the Fjallsjökull glacier lagoon we gear up and get ready for our adventure. With your glacier guide leading the way along the shores of this seldom visited lagoon you will soon be making your way through a wonderland of towering glacier ice pinnacles and brilliant blue ice. You will enjoy sweeping, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the amazing crevasse system as well as the steep ice fall high up on the glacier. For those looking for a quick but stunning adventure, this popular trip is a great glacier adventure. Our famous buses leave from the service terminal at Skaftafell several times a day for the scenic 15 minute drive to Virkisjökull glacier. On our way we will see impressive mountains that line the southern edge of the Vatnajökull glacier. This is a fantastic introduction to the unique, enthralling world of ice, traversing the spectacular but easy tracks of the Virkisjökull glacier, only a short distance from the Skaftafell campsite. We start with a short walk along the glacier valley where your guide will explain the unique features of the retreating paths of Fallsjökull and Virkisjökull glaciers and their surroundings.As we arrive at the edge of the Virkisjökull glacier we will strap on crampons and make our way up the icy but easily accessible slopes, witnessing on the way the incredible ice formations and crevasses, learning about how they are formed and how the glacier continuously reshapes itself. We will approach the awe-inspiring ice fall, seeing up close how the ancient ice stoically falls hundreds of meters off the mountain top below as it flows in slow motion towards the ocean, a journey it will never complete as global warming continues to fuel its melting and slow retreat.

Our famous buses depart from Skaftafell at 8:30 a.m. for the short scenic drive on the ring road that lies at the base of the towering mountains and crevasse riddled glaciers lining the edge of Vatnajökull glacier.

Our adventure begins with an introduction to the enchanting world of Icelandic glaciers, traversing a spectacular but easy track on Virkisjökull glacier. Walking on the glacier ice with crampons, we will see unique ice formations and deep crevasses, learning about how they are formed and how the glacier reshapes itself continuously. We will approach the awe-inspiring icefall, witnessing up close how the ancient ice stoically crushes hundreds of meters off the mountaintops on its slow crawl towards the ocean.

The adventure continues with a wildlife exploration of the historic Ingólfshöfði cape, an isolated island caught between the black sands of the south coast and the North-Atlantic Ocean. This is where, in the year 874, Ingólfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland, jumped ashore and spent his first winter in Iceland. The adorable Puffins, Razorbills, Fulmars, Guilleamots, and Skuas amongst other species now inhabit the cape numbering in the thousands. To get there we will cross six km of waters, marshes and sands in a tractor pulled hay trolley. After arriving at the cape we will go for a short hike (2-3 km) allowing us to have a closer look at the sea cliffs where the majestic seabirds, so characteristic for Iceland, nest during the very short arctic summer.

All of our trips start from the Glacier Guides sales office in Skaftafell, and we will provide you with all of the appropriate gear including crampons and ice axes. After taking a short drive to the glacier we will gear up on crampons, making our way past unique ice formations and over the crevasse riddled outlet glacier to a wall of ice. There we will set up safety lines ensuring that even if you lose your grip you will not fall more then a few centimeters. This is a safe and fun introduction into the exhilarating world of vertical ice and is sure to be an experience you will never forget!

The southern coast offers the most majestic peaks in Iceland. These are scattered along the edge of the Vatnajökull ice-cap, Europe s largest glacier. Perhaps the most known and sought after of these is Hvannadalshnúkur, Icelands highest peak. This trip however focuses on its surrounding peaks, the often forgotten slightly smaller brothers and sisters. These ascents offer a true Icelandic mountaineering experience of solitude and serenity, away from the crowds and off the beaten path. Scaling peaks seldom climbed by others, aside from the few locals that make their way to these summits, is a unique opportunity. It offers the essence of what mountaineering is all about, good company, amazing views and no crowds.

There are many peaks to choose from and they vary in difficulty. But they all share these two things; they are almost impossible to pronounce and they offer magnificent views over the surrounding landscape in all directions. To the north is the expansive Vatnajokull icecap and to the south lies the North Atlantic ocean, curving on the horizon as far as the eye can see. It is a truly magnificent sight, inspiring appreciation for the saying “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey”. We arrange guided hikes to Hrútfjallstindar, Þverártindsegg, Sveinstindur and all the other classics in this area upon request.

Being a participant in this trip will give you a once in a lifetime experience. Stand on top of Iceland’s highest peak and cast your eyes over the biggest glacier mass in Europe with an unforgettable breathtaking panoramic view. To the north you can see mountains rising above the glacier plateau and to the south there are endless black sands being washed away by the Atlantic Ocean. This is certainly an unforgettable experience that no adventurer should miss out on.

The night before our estimated departure the guides will meet up with the group to discuss the details of the trip and go over logistics. At this time you will also be provided with the necessary equipment so that you can be ready for an early morning departure.

Although there is no technical climbing involved in the ascent to the summit, it is both physically and mentally challenging and takes 10-14 hours. The total elevation gain is more than 2000m (6,500ft) and the total walking distance is 23km (14 miles). We will be moving over challenging terrain and crossing crevasses so an expert mountain guide and specialized glacier equipment such as ropes and crampons are essential.

Please note that because the hike starts in the early hours it will be necessary to stay the night before and after the hike in Skaftafell under the Vatnajökull glacier or in the surrounding areas. Please make sure you prebook this trip.

Leaving the busy Skaftafell visitor center and it s surroundings for an amazing, off the beaten track bike ride should be one of your easier choices while travelling around Iceland. We will bike over sands and glacier-rivers, past a glacier tongue, into Iceland’s tallest birch forest. This ride will take you from one extreme landscape to another while stopping at some of the locals best kept secrets. Biking through the Morsárdalur valley we will witness first hand the destructive path left by the quickly receding Morsárjökull glacier and the river it feeds. We will aim for a forest, yes - a forest in Iceland, formerly guarded by trolls and outlaws but open for those that join us on this ride. We will then leave our bikes behind for a short hike up Vestragil where we can soak our weary feet in a hot spring and for the braver of the bunch, a dive into true Icelandic spring water- it is as clear and cold as they say!

Adventure packed express day trip directly from Reykjavík to Skaftafell and Vatnajökull National Park and return the same day! This amazing adventure tour will take you into the Vatnajökull National Park in South East Iceland and onto the largest glacier in Europe. We will drive along the South Coast on the Skaftafell Express Coach and have lunch at the National Park entrance in Skaftafell before starting our adventure on Virkisjökull Glacier. There we will go for an scenic hike on the glacier itself and feel the ancient ice under our feet and all around. High above us on the outlet rises the massive Vatnajökull glacier in all its magnificence, a sight not soon forgotten.

With crampons (metal spikes for the soles of our shoes) we will safely walk on the ice, along the way seeing spectacular ice formations, deep sink holes and rugged ice crevasses. From Virkisjökull we continue onwards onto the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon on Breiðamerkursandur. This place is one of the absolute must sees and there is no better way to explore it than on one of the strange looking amphibian boats. We´ll find ourselves gliding between huge icebergs, which constantly break away from the glacier tongue of Breiðamerkurjökull, producing a wonderworld of ice, hard to describe with words. After our boat ride we stop for coffee and a warm Icelandic waffel with cream and jam before starting our journey back to Reykjavík.

Directions to Skaftafell - Drive road no.1 east from Reykjavik (the direction of Hveragerdi). Continue on this road for approximately 4 hours. Turn left at the Skaftafell sign where you will find the Glacier Guides eco-friendly booking office.

To get to Virkisjökull continue on the road no.1 past Skaftafell for approx. 10km. You will see a sign on the left with the Glacier Guides logo marking the Virkisjökull meeting point for our Blue Ice & Black Sands and Glacier Wonders trips.

To get to Fjallsjökull from Reykjavik continue on Road no.1 past Skaftafell for approx. 40km. You will see a sign on the left with the Glacier Guides logo (after crossing the Hrútá River bridge and before Jökulsárlon) Glacier Guides logo marking the Fjallsjökull meeting point for our Glacier Grand Slam and Glacier Explorer trips.

We will provide you with almost everything you need to have a safe and enjoyable adventure, but for each trip there are some things you need to bring. Please read the details for the trips you wish to join so that you can be sure you have all you need for a great day out in the Icelandic nature. We rent hiking shoes and waterproof garments if you do not have such items.

All of our glacier & mountain trips are subject to weather and conditions and Glacier Guides reserves the right to change any trip if we feel your safety is compromised. Your safety comes first on all of our trips.

Guests are advised that all activities are undertaken entirely at their own risk and they must behave in a fit and proper manner at all times in accordance with Glacier Guides guidelines and must take proper responsibility for their own safety. Glacier hiking and related activities carry inherent risks and guests may be requested by Glacier Guides to sign a liability release and assumption of risk prior to certain excursions.
