BY ED JAMESSmall rural community school Christmas concerts have

something special about them. They are funny, prone to the occasional miscues, they show piles of work and imag-ination by teachers and students, there is the occasional, mysterious squeaky reed among the band students, and they are enjoyed by an audience that is always very forgiv-ing.

By a rough count I have taken photos at over 50 vari-ous Christmas concerts over the years, and just when you think you have seen it all, along comes something new or an old standard that makes the Christmas season so special for everyone and for me.

This year’s school concert in Elkhorn, held on Tuesday, was a mixture of items with the various levels of band stu-dents showcasing their skills. However there was a musi-cal twist this year with a new music program. This was the Grade 5 Ukulele students, under the direction of grade 12 math teacher Katrinka Johnson, who did a great and unique performance of the Christmas classic “Jingle Bells.”

They were followed by the various band level students

of Mrs. Unger, who played selections to more complicated pieces such as “The Little Drummer Boy” and those sea-sonal favorites from “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” An in-teresting technique used the last few years with the begin-ner band students is a karaoke style, where the students play along with a basic background track. There were two

did a violin solo of “Silver Bells,” and later senior student Saige Davidson sang “The White Winter Hymnal.”

The Grade 12 class put on a skit called “The Night Be-fore Christmas” to the audience’s amusement .

The rest of the concert was given over to the produc-tion of “T’was One Crazy Night Before Christmas” that included the song “Christmas Is A Comin’” by the Grade 2 students and a very funny number called “Sleepin’ On The Floor” about when too many people come to visit at Christmas performed by the Grade 5/6 students of Mrs Sabourin.

Sherlock Holmes even made an appearance, played by Kiley Kalyniak, as she tried to uncover the impostor San-ta, helped by the Grade 3/4 students of Mr. Howard.

The K/1 students of Mrs. Stonehouse did a number called “Slippers Again For Christmas,” with all of them in a colorful variety of warm wool slippers! However the award for the loudest group went out to the Grade 7/8 students of Mrs. Unger and their song and skit “Touch-down in the Kitchen,” which had a very large family gath-ering for a football game, with football language used to prepare the Christmas turkey and meal. The whole Crazy Night skit was held together by narrator Hailey Bird, who read the Night Before story.

being a combined ensemble of students and staff sing-ing “Something To Believe In” with solos by Mya Krieser

Grade K-8 students who sang “Christmas Time Is Com-ing.”

There was a large afternoon crowd with the community handivan bringing some residents to enjoy the concert. The evening concert featured a performance by the Elk-horn Tiny Tots group and a surprise early visit from Santa Claus himself!

BY ED JAMESThe Elks Club of Elkhorn, like many

other community service clubs this time of the year, recently held their annual Christmas party for members, family and friends. The event was held at the Elks Hall in the village with a good turnout for the dinner and fellowship.

The MC for the evening was Kevin Tut-thill, who is also the club’s president. A brief meeting was held in which various reports were given. Three of the highlights were updates on the club’s weekly Chase The Ace event, held at the village hotel. Kevin was able to report that revenue from the weekly event gave back $17,000 to community projects in the village.

It was also reported that the club’s Christmas food drive was underway and

that the club is making various prepa-rations for the 65th anniversary of the branch, which will happen in 2019. The club, since its onset, has been a major force in so many projects that have added to the quality of life in the village.

At the conclusion of the meeting, it was back to the Christmas celebrations that in-cluded voting on the most ugly Christmas sweaters and other categories. Some of the sweaters even had their own working Christmas lights! There was even voting for the most male and female “Christmas-

However the most fun of the evening was the annual Christmas gift swap and trade game. In keeping with the spirit of

    fellowship and friendship.

  • We have had a wealth of Christmas music over the past week. Betsy Darroch and Judy Skiba brought their women of the district choir, who sang at the Spirit of Christmas concert. We were all sung out after car-olling with them. Judy was

back with her keyboard to accompany Kornelia Ens on violin two accomplished musicians.

On Saturday night the la-dies of Sandra Dick’s family

duet and songs. Manuela, who shared the piano with

Sandra, has begun work at the Villa. Cornelia is play-ing violin. Last night four generations of the associ-ated Gospel church came caroling. Half a dozen of the preschoolers sang “Away in the Manger”.

    Monday night three cars

went on a Twinkle Tour of the village. Thank you to drivers: Doris Erickson, Rhonda Erickson and Char-lotte Kovach. The library is closed over the holidays but she brought three weeks worth of reading. While the tour was on we had a visit from Mocha, the Santa dog, a puppy pulling a sleigh down the halls, with a doll in it. The puppy signed the guest book, but his parents and grandma didn’t. Other guests during the week were Sherry Wilson, Sha-ron Adair, Sharon Blackbird and Kaitlyn Veysey Loraine and Aime Dumaine, with Marguerite.

and Bingo, and exercises go on. Bingo callers have been staff members Heather Ludlum and Marlee Swal-low, Judy Moore and her daughter-in-law Brianne.

The United Church served communion, with Pastor Roy Bortolotto, and Evelyn Gruer assisting.

The topic of Circle of Friends this week was memorable Christmas con-certs. Ralph Burke had been the Jester, in a grade four

Mills was the man drawing the curtains. Fred learned square dancing, in the crepe paper skirts. We girls all did marching drills—more pa-per skirts—and enjoyed the singing. Janet, playing for concerts since grade nine, played carols in the dark. Of course Santa came with candy and a gift, even for the high school. On Santa wanted Ruth Holmstrom to sit on his knee. Fred got a shock with his stocking on Christmas morning held an apple, an orange and a piece of coal. Thank you to Mary Thiessen and Marga-ret Penner for their leader-ship. “Draw the circle wid; draw it wider still.”

Diana Prudie of Regina has returned home after spend-ing several weeks visiting with her sisters, Linda Birnie and Sandra Murray and their families.

Born to Matt and Mallory Olson of Estevan, a daughter on December 9. She weighed 6 lbs 15 oz and has been named Halle Nicole Jade. She is a sister for Lexi and a granddaughter for Darren and Kathy Olson and Gene and Michelle Luscombe and a great-granddaughter for Liz Luscombe all of Wawota.

Born to Jordan and Kimberly Leugner of White City, a daughter on November 21. She weighed 7 lbs 10 oz and has been named Emma Rose. Grandparents are John and Laura Peddle and great-grandfather is Bert Peddle of Port Alberni, B.C.

Family and friends gathered at the Wawota Drop-In Centre for a surprise birthday party. It was in honour of Jim Easton’s 75th birthday. A group of friends planned a surprise birthday party for Sean Choo-Foo at Kenosee Lake. It was a surprise as it was several weeks early! Then

closer to his real birth date in November they planned another surprise party in Wawota! It too was a surprise as they had already given him a party!

Sympathy to the family and friends of the late Berniece Sweeting who passed away at Redvers on December 5 at the age of 88 years old. She was one of nine children

many years.Once again the seniors of the community were treated

to the annual Lions Christmas supper on December 10. A delicious meal was served to the appreciative crowd of around 175 guests. Winners of the door prizes were Syl-via McWhirter and Ingrid Hansen. The Museum Santa’s

Green and Marie Brownlee. This was their 50th anniver-sary of serving the community in this way!

If you need a lift this year, stop by and check out the young carollers in the Museum window! What a delight-ful scene!

BY ED JAMESThe RM of Wallace-

Woodworth held their an-nual holiday banquet at the Elkhorn Elks Hall on Friday, Dec. 14.

The event brought out a large crowd. Many of their employees and volunteers were on hand plus invited guest from the surround-ing RMs.

The MC for the eve-ning was newly elected Reeve Clayton Canart. After a brief welcome, the blessing of the meal was performed by councillor Rea Kinnaird. After the meal a toast was given to the Queen led by Mark Humphries and a round of appreciation to the dinner catering company.

Canart took time to welcome the guests and the many employees and volunteers that help in the smooth operation of the RM. He also acknowl-edged several members from the neighboring RM, giving their reps an oppor-tunity to bring greetings to the evening. These reps were from both sides of the

    Manitoba-Saskatchewan border.

Cheryl Porter brought greetings from local MP, Larry Maguire.

    Long service awards

were given out to the fol--

vice to the RM—Denise Mayo, Heather Skelton, Kevin Wright and Ross Jay. Dennis Smith received a

10-year award from Canart who was assisted by Dep-uty Reeve Val Caldwell. Wallace-Woodworth Fire Department Chief Ken Bond was presented a plaque on his retirement after serving 22 years on

-sentations were to outgo-ing council members, with Gerry Nolan for three years of service, Sandy Heaman with seven years of service and Corrine Nesbitt, who served for seven years in various positions.

All who were present were give a strong round of applause.

However it was a very noisy farewell for Denis Carter, who is stepping down as reeve after 23 years of public service in the area in many differ-ent leadership roles. Mr. Carter and his wife Marci were brought forward, and with house lights dimmed a memory slide show was presented to all show-ing his early life, his keen sense of fashion, his love of farming and fun, and his early skills of future lead-ership. The show was very appreciated by the Carters and by the audience as a whole.

    After he received his rec-

    ognition plaque, he took

years of service and the changes he has seen over the years. He gave thanks to the many staff mem-bers and volunteers he has worked with over the years and gave a few bits of advice to his successor.

-sentation, the evening was given over to socializing and seasonal fellowship.

“This evening was a time to show appreciation to all

the employees and volun-teers of the RM. The public does not always see their efforts,” said Reeve Clay-ton Canart afterwards. “These people are the heartbeat of what makes our RM so successful. This evenings event gives them recognition and puts a public face on who they are and their efforts. All of the staff and leadership of the RM offer the best of the seasons greetings and a safe and happy New Year.”
