Gleaming Gargoyles Conclude Campaign in Duffield Darkness Alstonefield v. Duffield What a fine way to finish the Gargoyles’ 2018 season with yet another nail-biter. A full-scale team performance with every player sparkling, lighting up the Gargoyles gallery of heroes. Winning the toss, Andy Bray chose to bat and then proceeded to play his most fluent innings for many years. Showing a full range of shots including a delicious cut just behind point, an effortless 6 and numerous well-judged singles. He just looked calm and organised at the crease. His opening partner, (Ironman) Alan Hayes opened with him and spanked his first ball for 4. He then managed to keep his wicket intact with a non-foot-moving stabbing action, which is uniquely Alan. Caught for 5 he was replaced by Jon Lane who hit a rumbustious 17 before getting carried away with the belief that he was Viv Richards. Shahid Ali came in and regaled us with his signature sprinting at the bowler, but we were also to be entertained by both his right and left-handed batting. Wonderful pull for 4, left- handed. David Joyce was in the mood for a 50 and spooned the ball into unusual areas. Neither he nor the fielding captain were totally clear where the ball would go next, but the crowd were alive with the intrigue. With David out, Liam Duffy joined Shahid and played one glorious cover drive before being caught and bowled by Phil Jones. A sharp catch by a very good cricketer. Ben King, Steve King, Tony Guest all perished and it was left to Harry Jones and Andy Farmer to winkle out a few more runs. Andy Bray, having retired on 50, returned for the last ball and launched it for 4. The innings closed on 167 for 9. A fine tea was enjoyed by all in the impressive new Duffield pavilion before the home side took the field to bat. The bowling of Phil Jones was good but his batting was brutal. He retired on 53 and if he had had more than one ball at the end of the game the result would have been different. There were wonderful opening spells from Ben King and Tony Guest, and in the face of a hard hitter they were upright, stiff-lipped and firm. Tony Guest even managed to bowl a maiden. Ben made the breakthrough with Harry Jones taking a smart catch. Tony got some reward for his toiling with a plum
