What Fifty Said

When I was young my teachers were the old.I gave up fire for form till I was cold.I suffered like a metal being cast.I went to school to age to learn the past.

Now I am old my teachers are the young. What can’t be molded must be cracked and sprung.I strain at lessons fit to start a suture.I go to school to youth to learn the future.

A Time to Talk

When a friend calls to me from the roadAnd slows his horse to a meaning walk,I don’t stand still and look aroundOn all the hills I haven’t hoed,And shout from where I am, “What is it?”No, not as there is a time to talk,I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,Blade-end up and five feet tall,And plod: I go up to the stone wallFor a friendly visit.

In Hardwood Groves

The same leaves over and over again! They fall from giving shade above,To make one texture of faded brownAnd fit the earth like a leather glove.

Before the leaves can mount againTo fill the trees with another shade,They must go down past things coming up.They must go down into the dark decayed.

They must be pierced by flowers and putBeneath the feet of dancing flowers. However it is in some other worldI know that this is the way in ours.

Devotion

The heart can think of no devotionGreater than being shore to the ocean—Holding the curve of one’s position,Counting an endless repetition.

Unharvested

A scent of ripeness from over a wall. And come to leave the routine roadAnd look for what had made me stall,There sure enough was an apple treeThat had eased itself of its summer load,And of all but its trivial foliage free,Now breathed as light as a lady’s fan.For there there had been an apple fallAs complete as the apple had given man.The ground was one circle of solid red.

May something go always unharvested!May much stay out of our stated plan,Apples or something forgotten and left,So smelling their sweetness would be no theft.

Fragmentary Blue

Why make so much of fragmentary blueIn here and there a bird, or butterfly,Or flower, or wearing-stone, or open eye, when heaven presents in sheets the solid hue?

Since earth is earth, perhaps, not heaven (as yet)—though some savants make earth include the sky;And blue so far above us comes so high,It only gives our wish for blue a whet.

We are so blessed with our health, our adventures and our love for our families and friends. The only thing better than being at Glen Lake for two weeks would be being at Glen Lake for three. See ya next year. Same time. Same place.

Much love,

Marilee and Mary Lou
