GLENCORRIB / KILROE COMMUNITY SPORTSFIELD DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE wish to thank all those who supported their recent Table Quiz in Cradock’s Bar in Shrule earlier in the month. A total of €2,160 profit was made and it’s all down to the fantastic support we got from the
people of Glencorrib, Kilroe, Shrule and elsewhere, the GAA and the younger members from the parish. We wish to thank all those who attended and participated; those who helped organize the
tables, distribute and collect the papers, the markers and adjudicators etc. We wish to thank all those who bought tickets but were unable to attend. Your support was very much appreciated too. We wish to thank all those who gave spot prizes for the quiz and raffle and those who donated
hampers for the event. A special word of appreciation goes to James Lohan who put the quiz questions together and compiled and projected the results on a large screen throughout the
evening. Thanks also to Padraic Mohan who was the MC for the evening and no better man for the job. Thanks Padraic. And thanks also to our sound man George McGhee who did an excellent job. Thanks also to Padraig Cradock and family for hosting the event. For many of us it was our first
Table Quiz and it was a very enjoyable and entertaining evening. At the end of the night, the top three tables were tied at 75 points each and the tie breaker question was “what is the distance in
kilometres from Ballycurrin Castle to Croke Park” The answer is 243 Kms and the team nearest to it were the Quizzly Bears. And now the results: Winning Table: The Quizzly Bears: Ronan Ward, Adrian Moran, Ruth Cawley and Laura Kelly.
Runners Up: The Lodgers: Frances and John Cotter, Marie Byron and Stephanie Hoverty Runners Up: The High Kings: Tommy, Donal and Daniel Carey and John Mullen
Youth Team winners: Saibh Byron and her cousins Keeva, Jack and Paddy Reilly. Best name table winner: “Who cut the trees?” Gary Hennelly, Emma Farr, John Murray and Patrick
Burke.
ST. STEPHEN'S DAY MUMMERS who were raising money for Temple Street Children's Hospital Fund
would like to sincerely thank all those who kindly donated so generously and for their kind hospitality. A total of €613 euro was raised on the day. Thanks again
from the Flynn and O’Connor families.
THANK YOU: Shrule Community Centre Committee wish to thank everyone who
donated at the Shrule church gate collection weekend 12/13th January. A total of €295 was collected. Your
generous support is greatly appreciated.
JUST A THOUGHT: There’s a story about this philosopher who some years ago who had to make a
long train journey of several hundred miles. At the end of the journey the conductor proudly informed him that on this particular trip they had clipped six minutes from the previous journey. The Philosopher then enquired back. “How do you intend to use the six minutes?”
Nowadays we all seem to have got caught up in this passion for doing everything faster that it has ever been done before, but I’m sure if we were to meet the Chinese Philosopher, he would ask us,
too, what we have achieved by it. We find it difficult sometimes to slow down, to get out of the car and maybe walk a bit of the way; one might be amazed at what we might discover. See the beauty of the countryside, the friendliness of the people you’d meet, a hundred and one things that make
life worthwhile. So it’s a good thing to slow down now and again, and see what’s happening in God’s world. Have a Wonder-full week

ST BRIDGET is one of Ireland’s earliest recorded saints and among St. Patrick, one of our most famous. It is thought that she was born
sometime between 452 and 456 AD in Faughart, a few miles from Dundalk, in Co. Louth. Bridget’s father was a wealthy chieftain named Dubtach. Legend has it that she caused him great annoyance with her
generosity, giving away his valuable goods to the poor and needy. Eventually, Dubtach became so frustrated with his daughters behaviour
that he decided to remove her from his household. He approached the King of Leinster and offered to sell Bridget to him. However, while Dubtach was negotiating the deal with the King, Bridget, who was
waiting outside, managed to give away her father’s jewelled sword to a beggar so he could barter it for food for his family. When the King (who
was a Christian) learned of what she had done, he recognized her heart
and convinced Dubtach to grant her freedom by saying, "Her merit before God is greater than ours." Bridget is thought to have died in 1st February 524, when in her early seventies.
Legend has it Brigid prayed that her beauty be taken so no one would want to marry her, and the prayer was granted. It was not until after she made her final vows that her beauty was restored.
Little is known about Saint Brigid's life after she entered the Church, but at 40 she founded a monastery in Kildare. Brigid and seven friends organized communal consecrated religious life for women in Ireland and she founded two monastic institutions, one for men and one for women.
Brigid invited a hermit called Conleth to help her in Kildare as a spiritual pastor. There is a well-known miracle story about St. Birgid and her cloak. She was looking for land for her
community and King Leinster refused her request. St. Brigid persevered so she then asked for as much land as her cloak would cover. The King thought surely she was playing a joke since her cloak was so small. So the King didn’t hesitate to agree to her unconventional request. Miraculously,
when she laid down her cloak it covered acres of land. The story of her cross originated when St. Brigid was teaching a dying pagan chieftain about
Christianity. While her head was bowed she picked up the rushes off the ground and began braiding them into a cross. The chieftain asked Brigid about the cross and its meaning. He (the chieftain)
converted to Christianity and was baptized before his death. Brid agus Muire dhuit,” (Brigid and Mary be with you) is a common Irish greeting. Brigid once fell asleep during St. Patrick’s sermon. He found it humorous and forgave her with a smile. Brigid is the patron saint of poets, dairymaids,
blacksmiths, healers, cattle, fugitives, Irish nuns, midwives, and new-born babies. I remember driving between Dunmore and Glenamaddy a few years ago and met some 'Brid Ogs'
walking along the road, wearing white dresses and a straw hats. They were visiting the neighbouring houses. Something similar to our St. Stephen’s Day ‘Wren boys’.

POPE FRANCIS CELEBRATES THE BAPTISM OF 27 CHILDREN: Amid crying babies beneath
Michelangelo's famous frescoes, Pope Francis issued a simple advice to parents: never fight in front of your children. As tradition dictates, the Pope baptized new-born babies in the Sistine Chapel on Sunday 13th January last, to celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During his brief homily,
Francis reminded parents that although it is normal for couples to fight, they should serve as a good example for their children. "Excuse me, but I give you this advice: Never fight in front of your
children. Never. It is normal for spouses to fight; it is normal. The opposite would be strange. Do it, but without them hearing it, so that they do not see it," the Pope, speaking in Italian, said."You do not know the anguish a child experiences when he or she sees his or her parents fight."As he did in
the previous years, Francis again reminded the parents to be comfortable and let the children cry even during Mass. "I tell you: let them be comfortable. Be careful not to cover them too much and
if they cry of hunger, feed them. To the mothers I say: let the children eat. Be calm, the Lord wants it. Because they – why worry? – have a polyphonic vocation. One begins to cry and another responds, and another... and in the end, is this chorus of tears," the Pope added. This year, the
Pontiff baptized 12 boys and 15 girls who are children of Vatican employees.
