Headmaster’s MessageIn a recent communication to the parents, I emphasised the need for our children to realise the importance of honouring their extra-curricular commitments, and the necessity of planning their lives in accordance with their responsibilities. This does become a contentious issue, especially in the 4th term, due to academic pressures exerted on our pupils by both parents and teachers. It is, however, extremely important that we, as the adults in the children’s lives, assist them in finding a balance which is conducive to serving both academic, as well as extra-curricular, demands.This all being said and done, let us remind ourselves why we have sport at Glenwood House. It is one of those things that, for some children, makes school tolerable, but for most, it makes school fun: not just the organised activities, but the games of touch, dumpy, one-bounce and so on. These activities are a way for them to blow off steam, to bond with classmates, make new friends, interact with children of varying ages and cultures and to get to know the teachers on a more informal basis. Participating in extra- murals very often allows the children to operate on a more level playing field, the “ phonies” are exposed, the shy children come into their own, the bullies are put in their place and the truly exceptional personalities emerge. Extra-curricular activities, be it on the sports field or on the stage, can teach character, but what it actually does best is to reveal it!At Glenwood we expect all pupils to participate in at least one extra mural activity per term. The reason for being compulsory is that we intend to develop our children, not only physically and equip them with a variety of skills, but also to create a passion about being active and involved in some form of sports or cultural discipline which will enrich their lives in the long term. This can only be achieved by exposing them to a variety of activities which they regard as being fun. We shouldn’t expect them all to become champions, as that will usually take care of itself. Encourage them to take part, especially in those activities to which they have committed, as this will go a long way towards making them feel good about themselves.

Nelson Mandela 67 MinutesThe Annual International day in honour of Nelson Mandela – 67 minutes spent with someone in need…On 18 July the children of the Môreson Children’s Home were treated to an outing to Wakaberry. Each child received a lucky packet full of goodies and a bowl of ‘happiness’ with as many toppings as they wished. Our Glenwoodians, Cian Scholtz and Erica Vegter, enjoyed their time joining in the fun with the children. Marlene Luiters and Hilda Joseph can be seen in the supervising role!

Maths (Concentration) CampThe annual Grade 12 Mathematics Camp (or Concentration Camp as it is sometimes referred to!) took place during the first week of the September holidays at Carmel Guest Farm.

The 2015 matrics took the full days of doing Maths in their stride and many of them were astonished at how much they managed to accomplish. Working with others made the time pass much more quickly and it was even possible, sometimes, to forget the magnificent view over Victoria Bay!

Many problems were ironed out and misconceptions corrected and much, much, much practice took place. A little bit of time out in the afternoon and some relaxation time in the evenings helped them forget that they were actually on holiday… Tyler Boltman and some of the rugby boys took some time out to teach a young guest the intricacies of throwing a ball like a real hooker and kicking to the posts (see picture).

Many thanks to all the Grade Twelves who showed their commitment towards the subject and were willing to give their time and effort. The teachers appreciated your co-operative attitude and we know that the work you put in during this time will stand you in very good stead come the 3rd and 12th of November.

Plugged in and switched on...Working, working, working Yes, we ARE having fun

Vietnamese Trip – Operation Game ChangeProject Rhino KZN has been invited to select 5 worthy South African Youth Rhino Ambassadors to attend the culmination week of the Operation Game Change (OGC) demand-reduction campaign in Vietnam, between 23 October and 3 November 2015. They extended this invitation to various schools across South Africa, including Glenwood House.

OGC is spearheaded by the governments of Vietnam and the United States in an alliance aimed at ending wildlife crime, especially rhino horn trafficking, amongst the citizens of Vietnam - a country that is one of the leading consumers of the illegal rhino horn trade, which is driving the escalating rhino poaching crisis in South Africa.

The OGC campaign is being managed by the Freeland Foundation on behalf of the Vietnamese and US governments.

It seeks to increase awareness, change behaviour and catalyse action through a series of events and activities leading up to WildFest- an exciting live, high-profile, outdoor public event designed to engage, entertain, and influence public debate around illegal wildlife issues.

The few that are chosen will engage directly with their Vietnamese peers to educate them about the realities of the rhino poaching crisis in South Africa. They will represent in person, our need to conserve the last remaining African rhino populations and highlight other wildlife species at risk (eg: pangolin, elephant, lion), as well as explain their value for the sustainability of tourism, the benefits to poor, rural African communities and their essential role in the future biodiversity of not just South Africa, but Africa as a continent.

They will carry an important message from the young people of South Africa (and worldwide) to government leaders in Asian countries, requesting that they do more to clamp down on the illegal, criminal trade in wildlife in their countries, particularly against the rhino horn trade that is driving one of Africa’s world-renowned ‘Big 5’ species very close to extinction.

This will take place through the public presentation of the World Youth Wildlife Declaration to Vietnamese and other Asian government leaders. This priceless book already contains thousands of signatures and includes messages of support from world leaders such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the late Dr Ian Player and Dr Jane Goodall.

During their time in Vietnam, the South African Youth Rhino Ambassadors will participate in the following main engagements:

1. Presentations to Hanoi schools on the rhino poaching crisis in South Africa; this will include running Rhino Art and motivational talks about the value of Youth Wildlife Declaration to Vietnamese youth;

2. Participation in the Rally For Rhino event on 25 October 2015;

3. VIP Participation in the WildFest event and presentation of the World Youth Wildlife Declaration to Vietnamese government officials on 1 November 2015 at the Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi;

4. VIP attendance at a private dinner and presentation of the World Youth Wildlife Declaration to Environment Ministers of ASEAN countries.

Applicants were required to have attended either the 2014 or 2015 World Youth Rhino Summit, be between 16 and 18 years of age, had to write a one-page, personally penned essay motivating why they are worthy of being chosen, and provide a letter of endorsement from the school.

Jacomé Pretorius was chosen, along with Emma van der Meulen (Uplands College, White River), Jared Robinson (Maritzburg College, Pietermaritzburg), Phelisa Matyolo (youth leader of the Lesedi Cultural Dance) and Nadav Ossendryver (youth founder of the award-winning LatestSightings.com platform). She and the rest of the team will be meeting on the 21st of October in Durban for training preparation before their departure on the 23rd, flying via Hong Kong to Hanoi, Vietnam, where they will be staying with host families.

WATER-POLO

Pearson Stayers Tournament 15 – 18 October 2015

The under 19 boys water polo team travelled to Port Elizabeth on Thursday 15 October 2015. On arrival they had to get into the pool straight away and started the tournament with a rather disappointing loss against the hosts, Pearson. Glenwood House created many opportunities to score, but lacked the finishing in this match. Our next match was another loss, this time 0-16 against Grey. The third match of the tournament was against Hudson Park, the final score 3-9, next we beat Dale College 18-2, with Conrad Reynolds scoring 5 goals and Rudi Reitz 4 goals.

Glenwood House ended on a high by winning their last 2 matches against Graham College and Pearson’s invitational team, respectively.

Their overall placing in the tournament that ended on Sunday was 9th out of 12 teams. This is a decent result, especially if one considers that this is a team with 2 grade 9 boys and one grade 8 boy already playing at under 19 level.

The girls played in the Clarendon Stayers tournament and finished 7th out of 10 teams.

Western Cape Schools Trials

Both Annie Marais and George Marais were invited to participate in the Western Cape Schools Trials. Only the top 8 swimmers per stroke per distance from all schools across the Western Cape were selected for the trials and Annie and George were the only learners from Glenwood College selected to go. From these trials a team is selected to represent the Western Cape at the SA Schools Championships at the Ellis Park Aquatics Stadium in Johannesburg 11-16 December 2015.

Eden High Performance Academy

In the Glenwood newsletter it stated that George Marais, Trisha Pollicutte, and Ewert Pretorius have made it through to final selection. We can now report that all three were selected. Out of 60 athletes from the various codes in Eden, 10 Eden Academy scholarships have been given to swimmers. They were inducted into the Academy programme on 17 October in Oudtshoorn.

LANDMARK FOUNDATION EDUCATION

GLENWOOD HOUSE COLLEGE ENVIRONMENTAL- CONSERVATION PROGRAMME 2015

Landmark Foundation has been involved with Glenwood House since 2009. Our partnership has strengthened and it is one of Landmark’s Flagship Conservation Programmes. There are many aspects to the education programme that involve taking learners each year to the next level of understanding conservation as a whole. EARTH HOUR CONCERT – ANNUAL EVENT Every year during Earth Hour, a music concert organised by GWES (Glenwood Environment Society) and Landmark Foundation takes place at the school. The learners enjoy an evening under the stars, listening to local musicians and even some of their very own talent at the school. During earth Hour (8:30 to 9:30) fires and candles light up the stage. The learners of the school have an opportunity to participate in a global event that aims to bring awareness to a conscious world speaking with one voice about our planet. Over 200 tickets are sold and the proceeds go to GWES. LEOPARD CONSERVATION PROJECT - ONGOING A small group of learners interested in Leopards initiated this as their Flagship Project in 2009. Learners are involved in setting up cameras, setting up cages, collecting the data and placing it on a data sheet for research purposes. The data collected has given the learners an insight into the variety of wildlife roaming their forests. Glenwood was responsible for taking one of the most iconic photos of a collared female and her cub feeding off a deceased cow on a nearby farm. The project continues and cameras are placed in the forests by the new learners every year.

GLENWOOD KAROO CHALLENGE – CONSERVATION PROGRAMME This year marks the sixth year that Landmark participates in the Glenwood Karoo Challenge (GKC). The GKC is an 18 day journey, during November, which covers a 550km through Eden District. Learners hike, paddle and cycle the entire route. This journey tests the learners’ physical, emotional and mental strength. The aim is to promote the love for adventure and outdoor lifestyle. There is a strong binding that takes place and learners begin to enjoy each other’s company, they learn to work together as a team within their groups and, as they are surrounded by nature, they learn to appreciate it. Throughout the 18 days, a strong environmental and conservation awareness is instilled. Under these circumstances, the opportunity to guide the learners into a more conscious society that cares about nature and the planet, is a more real experience. WASTE MANAGEMENT A waste management and re-cycling programme is put in place for the duration of the 18 days. This aspect brings awareness to reducing, re-using, and managing waste on all levels, including food wastage. “DIE HEL” CONSERVATION PROGRAMME The programme at Die Hel focuses on Biodiversity and Leopard Conservation. It includes a talk on Leopards, behaviour, movements and other interesting facts, as well as their role in the eco-system as predators. They learn how to set up camera traps in the field. Each group has an opportunity to choose a location and set up camera for the duration of their stay in “Die Hel”. ROOIBERG SPEKBOOM PLANTING INITIATIVE This project is run with the collaboration of Andre Britz from GCBR (Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve). Learners receive a talk on the Spekboom, the role it plays in carbon sequestration and the process of planting in order to restore land. A documentary on Biodiversity is also shown to the learners.

RACING FOR LEOPARDS – GYSMANSHOEKPASS 79 km CYCLE This event has been a highlight in the GKC journey/challenge. This is the toughest leg of the GKC and passes through Gysmanshoekpass, once a forestry department road only. This cycle is dedicated to Leopard conservation. Glenwood have been great ambassadors of Leopard awareness. Everyone wears yellow “racing for Leopards” T-shirts on this race. COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECTS During the 18 days, the group travels on gravel roads and traverse a few mountain passes. On route they pass remote rural communities and schools. One of the shorter days they visit Warmwater Primary school, small farm school near Calitzdorp. Here they stop over and present, a small stationery gift and have lunch with the learners. They talk to them about what they do and they exchange stories. The learners enjoy this interaction very much. They also visit Vondeling Primary School near Stilbaai. The learners from the two schools spend a few hours together, playing games, having lunch and enjoying the interaction.

We would like to take this opportunity to commend the learners and teachers at Glenwood House for their strong ethos in Conservation. Their efforts and leadership have left a tradition of sound environmental values that will be part of the history of the school. A special thanks to Mrs Eckersley, a pioneer in this realm, whose love for animals and the environment has been the driving force in bringing this ethos to fruition.
