COMMUNITY CORNER: PHOTOGRAPHY MINISTRY
Photography is a ministry for Isabelle Gaultier,
who donates her time to documenting student and
parish life at St. Patrick Parish in Wadsworth.
Gaultier, a Waukegan resident, moved to the
U.S. from France 20 years ago. “I don’t see myself
as a volunteer, but it’s really a ministry, using my
experience in photography for the service of my
parish family,” she said.
Although she’s retired, Gaultier has supported
St. Patrick School, 15020W.Wadsworth Road, by
working on the parish newsletter committee for
the past few years.
For this special photo issue of Gurnee Suburban
Life, Gaultier talked about her experiences as a
local photographer with Gurnee Suburban Life
reporter Jesse Carpender.
How did you get started in photography?I never took classes. My first camera was very
old, a mechanical Leica. I did black and white pho-
tography in France. In 1979, I bought an Olympus
SLR. I took a lot of photos just for me and used
photos for Christmas cards. I never made a cent
doing photography.
What do you do for St. Patrick?I’m leader of the photography ministry and
maintain the library of photos for bulletins and
newsletters. We live in an era where pictures are
a thousand words, and our parishioners like to see
them.
I look at key activities and schedule myself. I’m
there [at the parish] a few times a week. I love the
events with the school because the children have
those very precious faces. Most of the time I’m
telling the story of what happened at the events
[with photos] but other times it’s more artistic, like
photos of the snow outdoors.
What’s your favorite photo this year?A photo of the back of the church with the fall
leaves reflecting in the 13 glass windows. I was
standing in the oak grove looking at the church,
and the colors reflected brightly.
What have you learned from beingan observer?I realize the richness of the parish in terms of
diversity. It’s a huge family with all ages, walks of
life and people from different countries like me. It’s
a blessing to record events and share themwith
the rest of the parish.

The picture of kindness

Being visited in a nursinghome makes residents feel likepeople are thinking of them,that they aren’t in storagesomewhere, said Rosalie RitaSeibel, a resident of SunriseSenior Living in Gurnee.
“You just feel alive thatsomeone’s thinking of you,”she said.
Woodland Elementary Westart teacher Marion Beram saidthat’s exactly what she and twothird-grade classes were goingfor when they hand-deliveredportraits to Sunrise residentsDec. 18.
Fifty-three students sat onthe floor of the activity room,holding the construction paperfolders they made. Each foldercontained a photo of a seniorresident taken weeks beforeby Beram, a portrait of theresident drawn by the studentand a letter.
A third-grader named SamCusumano began the exchang-es by reading aloud his letter toSunrise resident Bob McCann:“I hope you like my portrait.I made it just for you. Yourfriend, Sam.”
After Cusumano read hisletter, the students began excit-edly looking at their portraitsand then around the room tosee whether their resident waspresent. Meanwhile, Woodlandteachers attempted to matchstudents with their residents.
All around the room,students and residents sharedsmiles, laughs and hugs.
As McCann, 81, looked at theportrait by Cusumano, he said:“I didn’t think I was as hand-some as that. I got a crookednose, so I gotta face away so itdon’t show up. We look forwardto seeing kids; they’re a realjoy. You can’t beat kids, they’reso full of energy.”’
The students worked ondrawing and painting theportraits for about a month,said Alivia Latondress, a third-grade teacher. “They werevery excited on the bus, sayingthings like ‘I hope she likesit.’ It’s wonderful that they’regiving back to the community,and it’s a special gift to theresidents at Sunrise.”
Third-grader Liam Hickeywas looking around for a resi-dent he’d drawn named Mandy,with short curly hair and largeglasses. “I like to draw, and I’mexcited to meet her,” he said.
His classmate Mia Pashawas looking for the same resi-dent. “I can tell from the photo[the residents] are pretty old,but they’re each unique, andyou can tell they’re going to benice,” Mia said.
Some students’ residentsweren’t present, while otherstudents visited residents intheir rooms.
When Liam and Mia foundMandy, she was standing withher walker near the entrance.Mandy is a nickname for Ro-salie Rita Seibel, based on hermaiden name.
“You’re making my day. It’s
just perfect,” Seibel told Liam,Mia and two other studentswhile reading their letters.
Art teacher Beram saidSeibel was the only resident toreceive more than one por-trait. When Beram visited totake photos of the residents,Seibel’s three adult childrenwere visiting and asked if theycould each have a copy of theirmother’s portrait.
“We had three morestudents than residents, so itworked out perfectly,” Beramsaid.
Beram was thrilled withthe students’ and residents’reactions.
“When I asked them whatthey learned, they said theylearned how important it is togive to other people,” she said.

When the students left,Seibel said, “I love seeing thechildren’s bright eyes, smiling

Gurnee’s ‘downtown’has storied history
Those of you who remem-ber Rowan and Martin’s“Laugh In” may recall that itcame to you from “Beautifuldowntown Burbank.” I oftenaffectionately refer to our sec-tion of Gurnee as “beautifuldowntown Gurnee,” althoughwe only live near the VillageCenter, not in the area oncecalled the business district.
Gurnee does not reallyhave a true downtown area. Ofcourse, that doesn’t mean wehave no place to shop. Wehave many strip malls, aswell as the Gurnee Mills megamall. You can shop till youdrop at all sorts of departmentstores and specialty stores.
Still, those retail storesare spread out. Waukeganhas a downtown, although itis nothing like it was in itsheyday. Antioch, Grayslake,Zion and even Lake Villa havedowntowns. Gurnee has aVillage Center with business-es that are spread out alongOld Grand Avenue and GrandAvenue (Illinois Route 132).
It wasn’t always like that.Before Grand Avenue becamea four-lane road, before megamalls, strip malls and businessparks, Gurnee had a businessdistrict.
When I was a little girl liv-ing in Lake Villa, we’d travelthrough Gurnee many timesduring the year to go shoppingin Waukegan and to visit rela-tives in Waukegan and NorthChicago.
After crossing the DesPlaines River, there was a signtelling you that you were inthe “business district.”
Being a little kid at thetime, I really didn’t pay muchattention to the business-es. My most vivid memory ofGrand Avenue in Gurnee wasone of the brick houses on thenorth side of the street, eastof the businesses. They hadthe cutest little Christmasdecoration over their frontdoor. It was a Santa Claus andsleigh, and it moved so thatthe reindeer looked like theywere flying. I was fascinatedby it.
By 1965, when Bob and I gotmarried and moved to Gurnee,
“new” Grand (the four-laneRoute 132) bypassed the busi-ness district, so the little signsproclaiming its presence hadmore significance. I rememberstores west of the river onGrand. Worth’s Standard Ser-vice Station was on the cornerof what is now Illinois Route21 and Grand Avenue. On thecorner of Grand and Milwau-kee Avenue was Happy Bill’srestaurant. In between wereValley Liquors, Triso Printingand Insurance, Maleck’s Gro-cery Store and later, BlamesFlorists.
In the business districtitself were the Rustic Manor,the Dr. Schneider’s DentalOffice, McCann’s Barbershop,Warren Township Offices andGurley’s tavern.
The Depke building was onOld Grand (which ran betweenGrand and Kilbourne). TheVillage Hall, police and fire de-partments were all in the samebuilding across the street fromGurnee Community Church.McClure’s Garage was farthereast, as was The Boat Show.
In what is now Viking Parkwas the Viking Hotel andnursing home. Depot Road hadan actual train depot, and thelumber company was next tothe station. Up on the hill, eastof Depot Road next to J.J. Hen-derson’s was Welton’s I.G.A.and Gungler’s Pharmacy.
The principal of West RidgeSchool in Highland Park usedto have me shop for him atPotter’s True Value HardwareStore; it was known as thestore that had everything.
You couldn’t buy every-thing in those small business-es, but the owners knew yourname and were ready to lenda helping hand, and customerservice was superb.

Ed Sullivan keeps the holiday spirit alive all
year long as he tends to Christmas trees at his
family farm in Lake Villa. December is the fun
and easy part, when his family sells the trees
on the weekends, he said.
Sullivan has owned the Christmas tree farm
at 24774 W. Petite Lake Road since 1974 and
has been selling trees for 15 years. A farmer at
heart and veterinarian by trade, he’s owned
practices around Lake County, including
Mundelein Animal Hospital, now operated by
his brother.

It’s strictly a tree farm,worked by my family, includ-ing my son, daughters andnine grandchildren.
I think it’s a special place.We’re more than just a treelot. It’s a farm in the woods,with lots of cover and wild-life like coyotes, deer, hawksand rodents.
We have 18 acres of land,and about half of that is usedfor Christmas trees. The restis open land.
We have hay rides, trails,open woods. It’s a nice placeto spend the day when theweather’s good.
What kinds of treesdo you grow?
It’s all spruce and pine. Inthe industry, balsam firs arethe preferred Christmas tree,but firs don’t grow success-fully in northern Illinoiswith our heavy topsoil.
How do most peopleshop for their tree?
Some people grab the firsttree they see, but others willspend a lot of time picking itout. If they have a lot of kids,they’ll leave a kid to reservea tree until they find the bestone.
Which trees are lucky?If you find a bird’s nest in
a cut Christmas tree, that’slucky and you should leaveit there. The birds we see themost are finches and wrens,but only in the summertime.The nests won’t have anyeggs or young in the winter.
Do Christmas trees growin that perfect shape?
No. There’s lots of workinvolved, from spraying[for pests], mowing weedsand shearing. We trim themto create dense growth.Unsheared trees are wild
and tend to have branchesfarther apart in the middle,which is not what peopletypically want in a Christ-mas tree.
But some people likeunsheared trees so they canhang decorations inside thetree.
What’s a perfect treefor you?
An 8-foot tree – anythingtaller requires a stepladder,and they’re heavy.
It has to be balanced so itdoesn’t fall over, and havea good base. We have fake
trees at home because mygrandchildren are sensitiveto trees and animals.
What happens to thetrees left behind?
They’re a foot taller nextyear. We’re never worriedabout an off year, and wedon’t have to burn the treeslike the ones sold on a cornerlot.
How’s business thisyear?
The busiest weekend wasafter Thanksgiving. Thisyear we only had four week-
ends after Thanksgiving.We’ve sold about 100 trees.
We’re not a big-time opera-tion, it’s more of a hobby. Wesee a lot of the same familiesyear after year.
What makes yourfamily’s tree unique?
My favorite family orna-ments are from my years atUniversity of Illinois Urba-na-Champaign, where I metmy wife. We have ornamentsof certain buildings or sceneson the campus, like the AlmaMater sculpture and theEnglish building.

DIXON — Shaw Media an-nounced Monday that it hasagreed to acquire the assetsof The Herald-News in Jolietfrom Sun-Times Media.
The purchase is expectedto close during the first weekof January. Terms of the dealwere not disclosed.

Village offers tips to staysafe on ice this winterThe tricky thing about ice is
that the thickness of the ice
means very little when you are
talking about its strength.
One needs to look at the
consistency and structure of
the ice to determine its strength
capabilities.
Uniform crystal clear ice is the
safest type of ice.
Generally speaking, new ice is
much stronger than old ice.
Ice formed by the direct
freezing of the water of a lake or
stream will be stronger than ice
formed by melting snow, refroz-en ice or ice made by water that
bubbled up through cracks and
froze on the surface.
A few inches of new ice may
be strong enough to support a
person, while a foot or more of
old “rotten” ice may not be.
Snow on the ice will insulate
the ice, slowing the ice-forming
process.
The additional weight of the
snow can also decrease the
weight-bearing capacity of the
ice.Ice can be several inches thick
in one spot yet only an inch
thick nearby.
Ice is generally weaker near
the shore.
Ice over moving water can
be dangerous, especially near
shore, around inflows and out-flows, at bridges and on lakes
with large numbers of springs.
Fluctuations in water level and
the actions of birds and fish also
can weaken ice.

Warren Township girls bas-ketball coach John Stanczy-kiewicz is used to havingsome tall girls in his lineup.From the days of Amy Petersto Sarah Boothe, it has madelife easier for this coach.
The only tal l girl onthe present club is 6-footerKristin Jacobs, who plays as aforward. But this Warren teamisn’t small, as 12 of the playersstand at least 5-foot-6.
It’s still early, but theBlue Devils won only three oftheir first 10 games. On Dec.16, they were trailing visitingLake Zurich by six points athalftime.
Led by the likes of KylieNedelka, Sammi Jo Nixon,Hailey Leinart and KristenO’Brien, this team rallied to
beat the Bears, 47-43.Warren led by 14 points in
the final two minutes but al-lowed Lake Zurich to scorenine straight points.
“My teams in the past wouldtake the other team’s best shotand respond. This team is stilllearning about that,” Stanczy-kiewicz said. “We have plentyof seniors, but we need avocal leader. We have abunch of nice kids whowant to get along with eachother.”
Nedelka is the lone soph-
omore on the team. A 5-foot-10 forward, Rebekah Foley,has made the club. She’s afreshman. Everyone elseon the team are juniorsand seniors.
One of those seniors isHailey Leinart. She mightbe considered a basketballjunkie.
However, she was in-jured in a trampoline ac-c i d e n t a n d m i s s e d h e rjunior season.
Her injury was severe, asshe tore both her ACL and
MCL.Now healthy, Leinart led a
balanced attack against LakeZurich with 10 points. Shealso added four steals.
“ I ’ m t r y i n g t o w o r kon my defense,’ ’ Leinartsaid. “And on offense, I’mtrying not to rush my passes.”
Jacobs battled foul troubleagainst Lake Zurich but gavethe Devils six points and threerebounds.
“That was good to see,’’Stanczykiewicz said. “Withher size, we get some goodmatchups.”

On the court, the Blue Dev-ils struggled early. Particular-ly frustrating was a 57-12 lossto New Trier on Nov. 29. Infact, Warren had a six-gamelosing streak before topplingLake Forest, 48-27, on Dec. 12.

Law bans use of hand-heldcellphones while driving
GURNEE SUBURBAN LIFE
A new state law, startingJan. 1, prohibits all driversfrom using hand-held cell-phones while driving.
Under House Bill 1247, Il-linois will join 11 other statesby prohibiting the use of elec-tronic communication devic-es while driving.
Cmdr. William Meyer withthe Gurnee Police Departmentsaid, “Distracted driving hasbecome a very dangerous hab-it on our roadways. Accordingto the National Highway Traf-fic Administration in 2012,there were 2,328 fatalitiescaused by distracted drivingcrashes.”
Drivers still can have aconversation while in theirvehicle, as the law does makeexceptions for hands-free orvoice operated mode devices,including those with headsets.Drivers also will be able to use
GPS or navigation devices.Other exceptions to the
new law include calling 911to report an emergency situ-ation or calling while parkedon the shoulder of a roadway,according to attorneys atSalvi, Schostok & Pritchard ofWaukegan.
“When a driver uses acellphone, it decreases theirconcentration and responsetime,” said Patrick Salvi,managing partner at Salvi,Schostok & Pritchard. “Ourlaw firm sees too many vic-tims suffer from accidentsthat involve distracted driv-ing. We hope the new lawswill be a reminder for driversto focus on the road and curbdistractions.”
If caught using a cellphonewithout a hands-free device,motorists could face a $75 fine.The penalties increase by $25for subsequent offenses to amaximum of $150.
Another new law increasesthe penalties that can be im-posed on drivers whose useof an electronic device whiledriving causes an accident.
Under House Bill 2585,if the accident causes greatbodily harm to another per-son, the driver faces a Class Amisdemeanor charge and canbe sentenced to up to one yearin prison.
If the accident causes deathto another person, the driverfaces a Class 4 felony chargeand can be sentenced to one tothree years in prison.
Current law only allowsdrivers to be charged withtraffic violations.
Meyer said the previouslaw on hand-held devices wasconfusing, but it was also diffi-cult to enforce.
“The new law is now verysimple. Using a hand-held de-vice while driving will get youa ticket,” Meyer said.

associate in applied sciencedegree in optics and photonicstechnology, students at theCollege of Lake County willhave an opportunity to preparefor careers in this emerginghigh-technology field.The new degree supplements
a certificate program CLClaunched in 2009. The CLCboard approved adding thedegree, effective Jan. 1, 2014.CLC created the degree and
bought equipment for the pro-gram through its participationin National Science Foundationgrants totaling $1 million.CLC is the only community
college in the Chicago areato offer either a certificate orA.A.S. program in photonicsand optics.The degree will prepare grad-

This week, we have two match-ups to preview: The Bears versusthe Packers with Aaron Rodgers atquarterback, and the Bears versusthe Pack with Matt Flynn behind thewheel.
My best guess is it will be Flynnirrespective of what’s at stake.
Reports from late last week arethat Rodgers never was close tobeing medically cleared, so it’s hardto imagine he will make that muchprogress for the Bears game. Theonly thing that’s certain is we won’tknow until late in the week, if beforeSunday at all.
With Rodgers, you’re talking aboutthe best quarterback in the game, andone of the best ever. The Packers arecapable of beating you with the pass
or the run, and Jordy Nelson, JamesJones, Jarrett Boykin and, perhaps,even Aaron Quarless all becomeweapons you have to scheme for.
If it’s Flynn at quarterback, theBears will focus their attention onstopping Eddie Lacy, James Starksand Nelson, and then trust individualdefenders to make plays against therest while the defense tries to forceFlynn to make a play to beat them.
Don’t think for a minute thatFlynn can’t beat you. He’s very com-fortable in Mike McCarthy’s offenseand just fine reading defenses, goingthrough his progressions and know-ing when to quit on a play to fightanother day.
But he has nowhere near thecannon Rodgers does nor can hecommand that kind of accuracy. KeepFlynn in third-and-long, and he’sunlikely to beat you.
The Packers are top five or top 10in almost every offensive category,regardless of the quarterback, exceptavoiding interceptions and allowing
quarterback sacks. There, it makes adifference who’s under center.
Rodgers has thrown four intercep-tions and has been sacked 18 timesin 251 attempts. Flynn, Scott Tolzeinand Seneca Wallace have thrown 10interceptions and have been sacked24 times in 280 attempts. Flynn hasseven of those picks and 17 sacks in166 attempts.
Regardless of which quarterbackit is, the story of this game for theBears’ defense figures to be their32nd-ranked run defense versus Lacyand Starks.
With Flynn at quarterback, theBears will pack seven, eight or evennine in the box on most plays. Lacyis dynamic at getting to the secondlevel, but not a huge threat to outrunanyone in the secondary or go all theway.
Defensively, the Packers havebeen a huge disappointment this yearand are more likely to be the reasonwhether the Bears win the NFC Norththan Rodgers’ injury. After their best
outing of the year versus Atlanta inLambeau three weeks ago, Dallas andPittsburgh have scorched them thepast two weeks. They had no answersfor the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell lastweek, and Matt Forte should have abig day.
After a fast start to the season,B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett have beenineffective up front, and the loss ofJohnny Jolly for the season with aneck injury has been huge as he wasplaying the best football of his career.
Clay Matthews and Nick Perry areback from injury at the outside line-backer spots, but neither is rushingthe quarterback the way they are ca-pable, and A.J. Hawk and Brad Jonesinside are not as stout as they need tobe against the run.
Tramon Williams and Sam Shieldshave been inconsistent, at best, on thecorners, making the occasional bigplay but struggling in coverage often.That matchup with Brandon Marshalland Alshon Jeffery is potentiallyanother big edge for the Bears.

In a perfect world, you
have been crowned as your
league’s fantasy football
champion.
More likely, however, it’s
wait until next year.
In either event, I hope
you had fun playing fantasy
football this year. I also hope
that this column, perhaps,
provided you some not-terri-
ble advice, at least once in a
while.
If nothing else, there were
quite a few fantasy surprises
in 2013. Ray Rice was a con-
sensus first-rounder, as was
CJ Spiller. No one expected
Peyton Manning to be a bum,
but I don’t recall much talk
about him shattering the sin-
gle-season touchdown passes
record, either. It was a wild
season.
