PUNE, Punyanagari, as it is rightly called is one of the most blessed and exceptional cities of India. PUNE has not only survived about 1000 years of middle ages, but it has also prospered constantly during the last 600 years. It has had the privilege of having been associated with leading saints, scholars, first rate warriors, administrators, industrialists, merchants, traders, diplomats and artists. The change in disposable incomes and demographics – PUNE’S population today is younger than ever before – has led to a demand for better lifestyle fueling a retail boom. PUNE’S prime position has been possible due to its

Abundant natural resources including water Diverse skilled manpower in traditional and new-age technologies Disciplined labour force and peaceful industrial relations Great educational heritage Moderate climate Proximity to ports and airports at Mumbai and its geographical positioning Quality educational system at all levels across multiple disciplines Strong institutional presence – government and private initiatives

Strong vocational training base evolving over time PUNE is constantly changing to meet new challenges and thrive. PUNE is hub for all the action : education – skill development – manufacturing – support services – realty – hospitality – healthcare tourism – be it launch of new products and services or test marketing or consumption initiatives. Its diversity is an opportunity for all and any resultant growth has been nurtured and well sustained by a growing demand for all supplies. Its also home to global initiatives in search of meditation or physical well-being – Oshos & Iyengars thrive in consonance.

PUNE has been witness to hectic activity in the manufacturing sector with global heads of multi-billion dollar enterprises putting the city on their itineraries and PUNE is riding the wave. All of them are from the engineering manufacturing sector or setting up Engineering Design Centres in PUNE. Steadily expanding manufacturing capacities has a direct bearing on employment generation in PUNE. The Pensioner’s Paradise is reinventing itself both as an investment destination and as one of the engines powering the economy. EDUCATION : World-class education, good facilities, excellent climate and a cosmopolitan feel are some of the factors that make PUNE a sought after education hub. PUNE attracts talent as it also has a capacity to absorb the new generation considering its vast IT and non-IT industry dominantly present here. PUNE since time immemorial has been open to a lot of foreign students with the government supporting the city in its educational endeavors opines Dr. S.B. Mujumdur, President of Symbiosis International University – the immortal guru who opened vistas to the management education in PUNE. He has driven his passion to make Pune the education hub. PUNE offers education at affordable fees that doesn’t mean compromise on teaching values according to Prof. (Col.) Balasubramanian, ED of Sri Balaji Group of Institutes. Foreign students know that Pune, thanks of course to the high standards of the institutes they will get the opportunity to learn from the best in the business, says Ms. Swati Mujumdar, Director of Symbiosis Center for Distant Learning, PUNE. It is one of the main reasons why students prefer Pune even to other American destinations. Personal safety as well as secure environment and excellent hostel facilities are a plus point. PUNE’S pleasant climate is another aspect foreign students keep in mind while zeroing on a educational destination feels Dr. Vidya Yerawadekar, Principal Director for Symbiosis Society. PUNE has been promoting Indian educational values and making its presence felt across the world with its top educational facilities – university of PUNE or College of Engineering PUNE, IISER, Symbiosis, IMDR et all in lead. Large self-sufficient campuses strive to match the IIM & IIT culture in more than one ways. No wonder than that PUNE receives around 100,000 students from more than 80 countries each year - a feat yet to be rivaled by any other city in Maharashtra. Not only management and engineering faculty – but also medical education is well facilitated by BJ Medical College and the Armed Forces Medical College located in PUNE with host of other private sector institutes. Industrial majors from PUNE like Volkswagen have gone ahead and formed associations with leading educational / vocational institutes like ITI or Kirloskar Brothers with COEP. Cummins India has gone further and setup an engineering college for women and is moving towards a 50% women workforce while Persistent Systems a software product developer has tied-up with IIT-Powai, Mumbai for a distance learning project for M.Tech students. PUNE IS CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE BEST CITIES TO INVEST OR LIVE AS QUALITY OF LIFE IS BETTER. Vibrant PUNE is more apt a description with its young work force and expanding industrial horizon. Premium housing also attracts investors and end-users alike, to PUNE. The township concept has caught on with PUNE and there are many townships at various stages of development, some already having occupant

footfalls. Investors consider PUNE real estate as value for money. PUNE now has expanded in terms of cultural acceptance, manpower i.e. skilled and is diversified in talent too. Changing skyline of PUNE and the geographical spread of the city reflects its dynamism and its ability to absorb change. Whether high end Kalyaninagar area, off the PUNE Ahmedbagar road or Pashan – Aundh – Baner, in proximity of Hinjewadi, the manufacturing and IT industry has driven realty growth. Over the past decade several areas like Wagholi, Chakan, Wadgaon and Pirangut, previously considered as fringe areas have developed with presence of classy residential and commercial properties. In developing Pune every area in the city is caught up in the building frenzy. The development of the city, notwithstanding the chicken ‘n’ egg situation is one of growth bursting at the seams is not the term you could use in Pune since the seams are just expanding to take in the influx. Intelligent buildings are here to support lavish grand style. Pune may have taken a while to come into its own, but there no denying its sudden rise and is poised for further growth. INDUSTRIAL GROWTH

The reason for Pune to emerge as an industrial centre, and subsequently SME hub, is not difficult to conjecture. The region is a favourite destination for entrepreneurs as it has a vast pool of engineering and management talent. It's proximity to Mumbai adds another feather to its geographical location. It has cosmopolitan culture and salubrious climate that gives additional reasons for MNCs to open their shops in the city.

Job opportunities are increasing in PUNE mainly due to sheer amount of growth in traditional industry and arrival of new-age industries. New investment and expansion of capacities is driving PUNE business enviro.

It is poised to be among the top 3 industrial cities in the near future.

PUNE has strengths that are well-known. It is a light engineering and auto manufacturing hub, a large number of global brands are manufacturing here with its large and youthful population making PUNE a fun place to live.

Manufacturing began in PUNE region about 100 years ago, taking tiny steps in the form of textile mill – Raja Bahadur … and The Paise Fund Glass works at Talegaon. From this heritage the city has evolved into a desired location that everyone wants to be in !

Industrial progress in Pune began in 1953 with the founding of Hindustan Antibiotics at Pimpri and Kirloskar Oil Engines at Kirkee followed by Ruston, Cooper. Then came in giants like Telco and Bajaj Auto. Small and medium size vendors and support system fell in place in Pimpri.

The implementation of the Maharashtra Industrial policy encouraged domestic and foreign investment in PUNE.

HOSPITALITY

PUNE is a Foodie’s delight – if you are what you eat, then this is the city to be in, because you can get whatever you want, whenever you want it !

With something like 20 lacs people estimated to be added to the city’s population every year, it is hardly surprising that the city’s boundaries are being pushed ever outwards. With newer areas being added to PUNE, so also are the cuisines that come along with this influx. PUNE has long being a food lover’s paradise. The leisurely lunches, Udupi restaurants, fast food or the Amrutulyas dishing out fresh tea have new-age company. The Marriotts, Oakwoods, Hiltons, Sheraton, Taj cuisines vie with the Kayanis, Joshis and Chitales to spoil the foodies for choice.

PUNE REGION:

PUNE is situated on the banks of the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers, at an altitude of over 1800 ft. above the sea level, with an average rainfall of 170 cm. per annum and the bracing climate of a hill station.

Mumbai – PUNE expressway, a six lane, dual carriage expressways brings the two most prosperous cities even closer – and journey time of less than 3 hours.

Major roads from industrial trade centers converge in and around Pune on the new ring roads i.e. easterly and westerly bypasses that form a ring around the cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

It thus emerges that Pune is the nodal point where major national and state highways converge and is the appropriate location for cargo consolidation and de-consolidation enroute port.

Notably, even though Pune is the eight-largest city in India, it has the sixth largest metropolitan economy and the highest per capita income in India, therefore having the least income disparity between the rich and poor.

During the last two decades, PUNE’S urban growth has the fastest rate in Asia. Between 1940 and the '80s PUNE’S urban population has jumped from 2 lakhs to 20 lakhs, which is just phenomenal. The present growth is due to various factors such as industrialization, location of various Central and State Govt. establishments, military command H.Q. , public sector industries, educational centers like the university , colleges and many research institutes of national level, health and holiday resorts, a record number of hotels and restaurants, good climate and relatively less polluted environment, clubs, parks, places of recreation, cultural ethos of the city, and scope for each hobby and pastime.

Until the 1960s, PUNE’S socio-cultural life was dominated by intellectuals, writers, journalists, lawyers, theatre and film artistes, poets, painters, professors and research scholars, social reforms and socio-political activists. Today, politicians and industrialists, merchants and traders, builders and real estate agents, top management executives and technocrats, doctors and chartered accountants are in the forefront.

Having taken the lead in engineering industries, precision instruments, machines and machine tools and especially in the automotive and electronics industries, PUNE is bound to be one of the first four industrial cities of India. There is a large number of small and medium scale equipment manufacturers, who produce basic transistors, semi-conductors, electronic components, digital equipment, process control, communication equipment, television sets, video equipment, computers and computer accessories, both software and hardware. The installation of a India’s first supercomputer at PUNE has given a great impetus to information technology.

It has quietly evolved into the ‘Detroit of the East’ while retaining its position as a center of learning. Today, manufacturing has reasserted itself, despite the glamour associated with the software and IT enabled services industry. Most units in the industry are expanding, a lot of them are growing global while more and more medium – sized European and US companies are forming joint venture here. All for the low cost, big domestic market advantage and PUNE’S position at the vertex of the India trade crescent extending from Gurgaon in north and ending at Chennai and encompassing the industrialized western states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka enroute.

The country’s first two wheeler plant or light commercial vehicles the list goes on – 3 wheelers, sedans, SUVs, tractors and trucks, all of them have a presence here. OEs here have gone globally. Look at Bharat Forge with manufacturing locations in Germany, Sweden, Scotland, the US and now China.

Specialization and single product companies like Indo Schottle are here. Early global companies were Europeans lead by the 625 strong German contingent, Swiss and the Swedish. In late 1990s the 2nd wave saw them coming from other parts of Europe. Italy, Flanders - Belgium, France, Finland while continuing from Switzerland, Germany and Sweden. The Asians too flock here. Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Indonesians, are the most recent. British and US companies have flourished in PUNE through its industrial history. Chinese technology in alloy wheels is already here. While Jaguars are assembled in Pune, the first industrial park will be by Foton of China in Chakan. CISCO and Foxconn are arriving shortly in Pune and have made investment plans public in the last few weeks.

PUNE is the Metropolitan city and its twin-city Pimpri Chinchwad is one of the important industrial and commercial centers in Maharashtra. Government of Maharashtra has declared PUNE city as Information and Technology/ bio-technology center and manufacturing hub with special emphasis on automobile and auto components; engineering and manufacturing industry; food processing; biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. It is an age old trade and commerce centre known for its international connections.

PUNE has well developed physical and social infrastructure in its vicinity and in the midst of the strongest industrial concentration and the largest and premium corporate and consumer market of Mumbai-PUNE region. Mumbai-PUNE region accounts for half the wealth and income generated in the state of Maharashtra and around 10% of the GDP of the country. The industrial corridor is the industrial and services power house of India accounting for value added output of US$ 35 billion minimum at the last count years back and is growing phenomenally.

Called the “Queen of the Deccan”, PUNE is the cultural capital of Maharashtra. The combined population of the metropolitan region is between 4.5 to 5 million as of 2004. This decade has seen a sizeable investment in the software and automobile sector, in the city. This has prompted a huge influx of youth from all over the country. Several suburbs are now completely cosmopolitan. PUNE is probably India’s best source for talented and skilled manpower for the prominent automobile and engineering Industry in this part of the state. The city has over 100 colleges and institutions of higher learning including 14 Engineering Colleges and 10 B-Schools. A large number of ITI’s provide the necessary shop floor skills for the industrial outfits. Scientific institutions like National Chemical Laboratory, PUNE University, and the substantial presence of IT companies assure a supply of high quality knowledge base.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION PUNE DISTRICT is located between 17 degrees 54' and 10 degrees 24' North latitude and 73 degrees19' and 75 degrees 10' East longitude. Auto component SMEs are graduating as vendors to powergen, aerospace and defence. Food Processing Clusters Food and Food Processing industries are one of the fastest growing clusters contributing to the region's prosperity. The cluster produces a range of products comprising Spices & Pickles, Fruit and Vegetable processing and Ready-to Eat (RTE)/ Ready-to-Cook (RTC) products. As per Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) statistics, the total investment in plant & machinery of Pune food processing 1100 strong industry employing 20000 people and turnover is to the tune of Rs 300 crores of which 51% is in the non Fruit and Vegetable (F&V) segment. Of the 49 per cent accounted for by the F&V segment 21% is in spices & pickles, 22% in fruit and vegetables and 6% in the RTE/RTC category. The total investment in Pune F&V sector is around Rs. 147 crore. The city which has already been identified as one of the major fruit and vegetable cluster is planning a

mega food park. It has launched a pilot project for promoting fruit and vegetable processing cluster to expand existing business and attract more investments in this segment. This is among the 25 clusters identified in India to be developed as role models. The food processing industry is expected to touch a turnover between Rs 700 crore and Rs 1000 crore in coming years. Pune enjoys some specific advantages in terms of expanding population, new upcoming industries, availability of fruits, vegetables and spices, and a lucrative export potential. Most of these industrial and food processing clusters which have come up in Pune, took almost a decade to reach the present stage. The credit goes to entrepreneurs who began on small scale and grew bigger after years of struggle. The convergence of these small units into clusters also have been gradual and on mutual interest basis. Once classified under Small Scale Industries (SSI), the government has realised its potential and has begun promoting it at par with other SMEs in developed countries. With India's SMEs sector integrating with the global market, the sector is expected to be a driving force of industrial growth in India. Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Agro-based Industry thrives in Pune Pune is among the top two centers for vaccine manufacturing in the world. The vaccine industry, in the city alone, is worth Rs.2000 crores and is estimated to be producing almost 50% countries total market and exporting them to 150 countries across the world through the WHO and UN channels. Emcure Pharmaceuticals began as a contract manufacturer and now have a tie-up with global manufacturer Actavis Pharma of Iceland and Bristol – Myers and supplying world wide. List displays versatility at its best.

Pune is also home to numerous small and medium sized enterprises. The PUNE SME CLUSTERS are playing a vital role in the economic growth of the region. There are approximately 12,500 industrial units which employ more than 842,700 people in the PUNE industrial belt. More than 4,500 units are directly or indirectly dependent on the automobile and auto components sector.

These units together contribute to nearly 60% of the total turnover of PUNE which is about Rs. 30,000 crores. In the industrial belt, there are about 6,138 micro industries, which employ 99,000 people. But the biggest contribution comes from 6,247 SME industries that provide employment to no less than 516,000 workers. There are some 115 large industries, which employ another 227,700 people in the region. The annual turnover of PUNE manufacturing hub has grown manifold during the last two decades. While in 1985 the turnover was Rs 2,749 crore, in 2007 it jumped up to Rs 5,2000 crore. The period between 2000 and 2007 was very significant for the city's industrial clusters as numerous industries opened shop in the region. The distribution of SME clusters in PUNE follows a logical pattern of proximity to industries. Engineering/machining workshops: Mostly micro and small units, numbering 2000+. Deals in finishing, grinding, packaging. It also provides services to the auto components manufacturers. Fabrication: Mostly medium and small suppliers to auto components. However, they have diversified client base which include machinery and equipment producers, consumer durables, etc. Total numbers of such units are more than 1000 Plastic and rubber components: There are almost 1000 such units. They are the suppliers to diverse sectors such as auto components, packaging industry, consumer durables, etc. Dies and moulds: There are 600 small industries which are suppliers to auto, auto component industries that have tooling rooms. Machinery and equipments manufacturers: There are big and small companies in the segment which manufacture machineries and equipments. Have exposure to auto industry and other sectors. Approximate number of such units: 500 Electrical parts: There are about 300+ such SME units which supply parts to auto component manufacturers as well as to consumer durables and machinery producers.

Chemical: Mostly medium scale units Over 500

Casting/ Forging: There are 350 such units which are a mix of large and small companies. Suppliers to

auto component and automobile manufacturers, machinery parts makers, etc.

Machine tools: Mostly SMEs. Total number of such

units over 200 + and are mostly suppliers to auto component manufacturers.

Electronics: Over 100 large and small companies, which manufacture range of products from

components to consumer durables. The PUNE auto component cluster has been of such

great significance that the government recently identified it among 19 industrial clusters under the Industrial

Infrastructure Upgradation. Maharashtra government, in order to speed up foreign investment in the region, has decided to construct a six-lane highway to connect Talegaon, Chakan and Ranjangaon with PUNE to improve the infrastructural facilities. The PUNE SME clusters also supply products and services to industries like Engineering, Food Processing, Information Technologies and other ancillary units. According to Dun & Bradstreet's study titled "Emerging SMEs: PUNE 2008" the engineering sector may grow by as much as 40% in the next two years. The study observed that 62% of the companies were involved in exports and 26% of the engineering companies manufactured and marketed branded products. It emphasised that 30% of the companies in the region have two or more manufacturing facilities One of the key features of the city's SME Clusters is its geographical distribution. Most of these satellite towns cater to one or two major industries. Some of the main SME Clusters are: Pimpri-Chinchwad The twin-city has high concentration of industries specialising in Automobile, Electronics Equipments Manufacturing, and Information Technology. This Park is among the best known in India. Set up in 1962 on an area of over 1200 hectares, it is now fully occupied, with over 3200 industrial units. The park was instrumental in putting Pune on the global industrial map Talegaon Maharashtra Government and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have chalked out a plan to ensure that the State puts forth a total biotechnology revolution. Since the Government wants to establish PUNE as a technology hub, MIDC has set up Biotechnology and Infotech Parks between Talegaon and Vadgaon. The government has also promoted Talegaon as a floriculture park for production of superior quality flowers like tulips and orchids, which are in demand in international markets. The area is in the Agriculture Export Zone. Ranjangaon Located at 50 km from PUNE airport, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has set up an industrial park in the region. Ranjangaon has attracted numerous industries from auto manufacturer to white goods giants like Whirlpool, Matsushita – National Panasonic, Anchor and LG. This industrial belt has emerged as the largest foreign direct investment for Greenfield projects in the country. WHY PUNE for SMEs In order to promote SME Clusters in PUNE, the Govt of India and the United Nation Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) have agreed to make the existing units energy efficient, environment-friendly and more productive. UNIDO has recommended setting up of a mutual credit guarantee scheme to help SMEs raise funds from banks and financial institutions. The role of SME clusters has been so vital to the economic development of the region that a Mahratta Chamber official called it the very arteries for product supply. "There are some 9,000 SME units from the total 12,500 units, crisscrossing industrial landscape of the city; they are the arteries, which make the city throb," the official said. The reason these clusters are finding favour with entrepreneur is because it provide easy access to an available market. In order to promote these clusters, the government has come out with cluster objective to

Page 19: Glimpses of Pune - Smart destination for Industry, Education and Living

19

effectively utilise the workforce, machinery and equipments, plant layout, available floor space etc. It has also set out to improve the flow of processes, material, information and finance apart from reducing downtime, overtime and rescheduling. The government is working on a comprehensive plan to eliminate wastages and minimize problems in these clusters. Apart from designing and implementing effective Management Information System (MIS), it has also introduced a new approach of 'Vision-Mission-Strategy-Goals-Objectives'. There are over 25 aluminum SME units in PUNE region, out of which 5-6 are export units. The units focussing on domestic market are doing well, whereas the export-oriented units have become vulnerably exposed to global recessive trends. Another SME industry which is fast emerging in PUNE’S satellite area is - plastic industry. It was not long back when DSM NV, a global company headquartered in The Netherlands, set up a manufacturing facility in the city. The company provides plastics compounds to be used in manufacturing moulded components for the automotive, consumer goods and other industries. There are some 400 Plastic SME industries catering to big and small manufacturing units in the region. IMPORTERS / EXPORTERS ARE THE backbone of foreign trade and include worthies like:
