Presented by Andrew Gatenby – Investment Manager, Channel Capital Andrew will define how agriculture is a powerful asset class on the global stage and how Australian agriculture can get more investor equipped. Andrew will look at the drivers behind investment decisions from institutional and private sectors and give a view to how any business can get a seat at the investment table.

Ag Investments - A global perspective

Presented by Detlef Schoen – Managing Partner Farm Investments, Aquila Capital Aquila Capital is one of the leading global investors in alternative and real asset investments with over €360M Euro (>US$500M) invested in farming assets. In a paper published by Aquila Capital earlier this year entitled Real Assets – The New Mainstream, it is reported that there will be a trend into greater investment allocations into real assets, including agriculture with up to 60% of institutional investors surveyed looking to increase their exposure over the next three years. Using the Aquila experience, Detlef will discuss investment structures as well as investment processes, giving a unique and insightful view into the shift in investment thinking around future opportunities in agriculture both in Australia and around the world.

Bio – Jennifer Wainwright Jennifer has worked extensively across Australia’s rural sector, having worked over the last 15 years predominantly in the beef industry, with producers, investors, corporations and funds, representing some of the world’s largest and most progressive organisations. Today, Jennifer is the Managing Director of Aux Venture, providing services in investment development, pre-transaction due diligence and strategy advisory. Established in 2009, Aux Venture set out with a vision to create specific investment and financial support services to agricultural business. Focusing on the potential of northern Australia,

Aux Venture’s client base collectively operates over 1.5 million head of cattle. With over twelve years of experience in Rural Finance, including seven as ANZ Bank’s authority on livestock, Jennifer has also worked extensively in rural credit and is an advisor to Government on state and federal issues. Jennifer holds a Bachelor Degree in Rural Science with Honors from the University of New England and is a current participant on the Australian Rural Leadership Program sponsored by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation.

Bio - Andrew Gatenby Andrew is the Investment Manager – Agriculture at Channel Capital. Prior to this Andrew was an investment analyst with Solaris Investment Management Limited (Solaris), a $2.5 billion funds management group based in Brisbane. Andrew’s background includes analysis and portfolio management in Mining, Energy, Food & Agriculture, Chemicals, Utilities and Infrastructure sectors. Andrew also managed investments for 25 ASX listed the Suncorp Group. Prior to his time in funds management, Andrew spent over 15 years in the agriculture industry holding several key positions with large scale agribusiness operations, including Manager of

Property Development and Environment at Stanbroke Pastoral, Australia’s largest beef producer at the time. Andrew also served as Manager Agribusiness with Australian Country Choice, undertaking supply chain operational management for the largest supplier of beef to the Coles Supermarket chain, turning over more than 100,000 head per year. Andrew is from an agricultural family, who had interests in farms producing fat lambs, beef cattle, irrigated and dry-land crops in Tasmania and NSW. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Deakin University, as well as a Masters in Applied Finance from the Queensland University of Technology and a Diploma of Farm Management from Marcus Oldham Agricultural College. An agronomist, farmer and former global agri-business executive, Detlef Schoen is the Managing Partner, Farm Investments at Aquila Capital - a leader in alternative and real asset investments. Schoen has over 35 years of experience in international agribusiness. After completing a degree in agronomics he began his career with Cargill - having held a range of positions at the firm, Mr Schoen was Managing Director of the European Commodities Merchandising Division. He then ran his own farm services and grain merchandising business for a time before returning to global agribusiness as Manager of International Grains for NIDERA. Mr Schoen has held several non-executive and supervisory board positions in farming and agri-business and now travels the globe for Aquila’s investment interests, regularly visiting Australia. Detlef is based out of Aquila Capital’s head office in Hamburg, Germany.
