O f S p e c i a l I n t e re s t • Due to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the capital of

China has become the country’s showcase to the world. The Beijing National Stadium, better known as ‘The Bird’s Nest’, has attracted 20,000 to 30,000 tourists a day, drawing profits despite a minimal number of significant events hosted at the stadium.

• Peking opera, a combination of acrobatics and stunts, dialogues and songs, is considered one of the most important aspects of Chinese culture in Beijing. It is also the most representative and influential opera in China.

• The parks in Beijing boast of many activities such as playing of sports, tai chi practices, dancing, and calligraphic performances. Centrally located Beihai and Jingshan parks are popular choices for a fun and relaxing afternoon out.

C u l t u r a l I n f o r m a t i o n o n B e i j i n gDespite the growing forces of capitalism, China is still a communist country with communist values, aiming for modernization but not Westernization.

Authority is accepted and the desire for equality prevails. Although the ‘iron rice bowl’ - the notion that the company or state will provide and that a job is for life - is less accepted now, the highest priority for most Chinese is caring for their families. Society is polarized between rich and poor, with an astonishing 354 million people living below the poverty line. Despite having very few inhabitants who are not ethnic Chinese, society is highly diverse, with more languages spoken than in Europe.

Working with Chinese can challenge Western business professionals. Think about these things as you build working relationships with Chinese nationals:1. Demonstrate flexibility in your thinking. Western thought is

dominated by linear logic; Chinese thinking is influenced by early philosophers, who saw a paradoxical balance of opposites in all things. Where Westerners tend to look for clear alternatives (option A instead of option B), the Chinese may examine ways to combine both options.

2. Spend time developing guanxi - personal contacts/relationships involving mutual cooperation and support. Guanxi can make or break a venture in China.

3. Remember that ‘saving face’ – mianzi - is critical to the Chinese. Mianzi is the social perception of a person’s prestige. Causing someone to lose face will result in a loss of trust in the relationship.

4. Expect negotiations to continue even after an agreement has been signed. Be as adaptable as you can be.

5. Being punctual for appointments and being smartly dressed is a sign of respect.
