LETTER FROM THE GLOBAL HONOR SCHOLARS COMMITTEE Dear MBU Global Honor Scholar:

Whether you are a new or returning member of the honors program, you may have questions about certain aspects of the program. This booklet is designed to answer those questions and help you to derive the most benefit from all the Program has to offer.

Each section of the Handbook begins with a general statement describing the particular aspect of the Program discussed in that section. More detailed information follows. Appended at the back are single copies of various special forms required; please note that, in fact, most of these are submitted electronically, but you can use these as a template for your e-document..

The Global Honor Scholars Committee has special responsibility for you. Whether as a committee or as your individual advisors, this faculty committee seeks to provide you with stimulating educational opportunities, both in the classroom and outside. We want you, as participants in the honors program, to experience new ways of learning that are exciting and challenging: we want you to discover new ways of exploring ever-expanding fields of knowledge. It is important for you to feel that the committee is a responsive resource, ready to help you if you want to approach your studies in an out-of-the-ordinary way. Perhaps you have identified some subjects or issues that seem related to each other, but no course in the catalogue suggests such a relationship. Or perhaps there are two or more professors who approach events or issues from vastly different perspectives, and you would like to hear the pros and cons defended while you read up on the background material for both points of view. An Honors colloquium, Honors contract, or a senior Honors project could be a way to explore these connections and differences.

Because we want you to participate actively in making your education open windows on the world, we urge you to keep in touch with other honor students, especially through the MBU Global Honor Scholars Society. Share your ideas with them as well as with us. The structure of the Honors Program is such that the subject matter to be explored in honors courses will be constantly changing, so as to serve the interests and enthusiasms of the Scholars currently enrolled. Two members of the Global Honor Scholars Society represent Honor Scholar students at meetings of the faculty committee, so your concerns can be formally presented to the entire committee. In addition, we encourage you to contact us individually.

Keep this Handbook readily available to answer your questions as they arise and to remind you of your options as participants in the Honors Program. Especially, consult it each semester as you plan your coursework, and mark your calendar for the special opportunities you want to enjoy.

INTRODUCTION TO THE GLOBAL HONOR SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The purpose of the Global Honor Scholars Program at Mary Baldwin University is to provide recognition of excellence and offer special opportunities for students of exceptional ability. It is designed to allow them to develop independently and creatively according to their own intellectual curiosity and desire to learn.

All participants in the honors program at Mary Baldwin are Global Honor Scholars. All Global Honor Scholars are admitted to the program by application. First-year Global Honor Scholars are selected by the Global Honor Scholars Committee from applicants to four-year undergraduate programs on the basis of SAT/ACT scores, high school records, essay responses to the Honors Program application, and personal interview. All other Global Honor Scholars apply for admission to the Global Honor Scholars Program after achieving a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher in at least twenty-four hours of graded work at MBU. Having met this requirement, a candidate may apply to become a Global Honor Scholar by submitting a copy of her transcript, a letter of recommendation from an MBU faculty member, an essay addressing the student’s desire for admission to the program, and an outline of her plans for completing the Honors Degree.

Selection as a Global Honor Scholar entitles a student to certain privileges in addition to participation in the honors program. These privileges include priority in course registration, eligibility to live in Global Honor Scholar housing, organizational leadership in the annual Capstone Festival in the spring, membership in the MBU Global Honor Scholars Society, participation in special cultural activities, recognition at convocations (Founders’ Day, Honors Convocation, and Commencement), and eligibility to apply for an Honors Degree.

The honors program has several components designed to lead to the Honors Degree. These include special honors colloquia and seminars, honors contracts in regular courses, and senior honors research theses or projects.

Specific requirements for the Honors Degree are described on p.14.

ELIGIBILITY FOR HONOR SCHOLAR STATUS First-Year Global Honor Scholars

First-year Global Honor Scholars are selected from the applicants to undergraduate four-year programs on the basis of SAT (or ACT) scores, overall high school record, and written application. All applications are screened by the Global Honor Scholars Committee. Finalists are expected to come to the campus for an interview, preferably on the Global Honor Scholar weekend held in the spring semester.

By the end of her first semester, a First-year Global Honor Scholar must achieve a GPA of 3.25. By the ends of her/his second, third, and fourth semesters, she/he must achieve a cumulative of 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5 respectively. Global Honor Scholars who have transferred to Mary Baldwin College must maintain a 3.3 cumulative GPA while they have freshman standing, and a 3.5 GPA while they have sophomore standing. By the end of the sophomore year, all Global Honor Scholars must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher to continue in the Global Honor Scholars Program.

If a student fails to meet the criteria for hours earned or minimum GPA in any one

semester, she/he will receive a letter of warning from the Global Honor Scholars Committee. If the student fails to meet the criteria for a second consecutive semester, she/he will lose Global Honor Scholar standing. Students who have been dropped can reapply to the program with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. However, students must spend at least three semesters in the Global Honor Scholars Program to be eligible to apply for the honors degree. MBU Global Honor Scholars

To become an MBU Global Honor Scholar as an undergraduate upperclassman, a student must have achieved a 3.5 cumulative GPA after at least two semesters at MBU (earning at least twelve hours per semester). All undergraduates enrolled in four-year programs, including Baldwin Online and Adult Programs, may apply. Although at present an MBU Global Honor Scholar receives no monetary award for that distinction, Global Honor Scholar status does carry considerable prestige. An MBU Global Honor Scholar is eligible for all the privileges offered by the Program.

Global Honor Scholars are required to earn twelve or more hours per semester, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.50. A cumulative GPA falling below 3.5 for one semester will result in a letter of warning. A cumulative GPA that falls below 3.5 for two consecutive semesters will result in revocation of Global Honor Scholar standing. In the semester after the

student receives a letter of warning, if the GPA returns to the required level, the warning is removed from the record; on the other hand, if for two consecutive semesters the minimum criteria are not maintained, the student loses Global Honor Scholar standing. If she/he is a Bailey Scholar, the initial scholarship award is maintained.

Admission to the GHS program assumes progress toward an honors degree. Student progress in the completion of courses required for the honors degree will be assessed during the first semester of the junior year at Mary Baldwin. Global Honor Scholars who have not made reasonable progress in the required coursework may be dismissed from the program. Procedures for applying to become an MBU Global Honor Scholar may be found on p. 30.

Leave Policy:

An MBU Global Honor Scholar who, for personal or academic reasons, takes a leave of absence from the College, i.e., does not enroll any work through MBU for one or more semesters, will maintain her Global Honor Scholar status and will continue as a Global Honor Scholar upon her return to MBU. An MBU Global Honor Scholar who has completed all requirements for graduation prior to her final semester will retain her Global Honor Scholar status through graduation.

PRIVILEGES OF GLOBAL HONOR SCHOLARS Participation in the Honors Program

Honors Colloquia are generally open only to Global Honor Scholars (although on occasion an individual student who is not a Global Honor Scholar may enroll by permission of instructor). In addition, only Global Honor Scholars are permitted to pursue honors credits via Honors Contracts. Eligibility to apply for the Honors Degree is also limited to Global Honor Scholars. Membership in the MBU Global Honor Scholars Society

Membership in the MBU Global Honor Scholars Society is open only to Global Honor Scholars. Details of the Society's activities are described on pages 19-21. Cultural Activities

The GHS Program occasionally sponsors cultural field trips for Global Honor Scholars, typically to performance events in Charlottesville, Richmond, or Washington, D.C.

The Mary Baldwin Theatre offers free tickets to Global Honor Scholars Contact the

Director of GHS for information. The MBU Broman music concerts are available free to all students, as are many other cultural events on campus. Global Honor Scholars Bulletin Board

A bulletin board on the north end of the Pannill Center has been designated for Global Honor Scholars. Check the board regularly for announcements of scholarship opportunities, field trips, upcoming honors courses, and activities of special interest to Global Honor Scholars. You can also check out and like the Global Honor Scholars Facebook page for more

information on events and what current honor scholars and alums are doing. Priority in Registration

Early registration is a particularly valuable privilege because it means that no matter how popular the course in which a Global Honor Scholar may wish to register, the Global Honor Scholar receives top priority in registration. When you receive your pre-registration materials

from the Office of the Registrar, please note the registration dates for Global Honor Scholars. Academic Advising

First-year Global Honor Scholars are able to meet and support other freshman Global Honor Scholars by sharing the same first-year advising groups and participating in MBU 102: All the World’s A Stage at the Blackfriars Theater. First-year Global Honor Scholars are assigned an academic advisor who is familiar with the GHS Program and the needs and abilities of Global Honor Scholars. In addition, Global Honor Scholars of all classes are encouraged to seek advising related to their honors course work or honors program requirements from the Director of the Honors Program or other Global Honor Scholars Committee members. Library Privileges

A few individual carrels in the library have been reserved for Global Honor Scholars. Books and notebooks can remain in the carrel while the student is attending class, as other students are not permitted to use the assigned desks. Carrel assignments are made only on request, on a first-come, first-served basis. Carrel application forms are available at the circulation desk. Be sure to indicate on the application form that you are a Global Honor Scholar.

Global Honor Scholars may request purchase of books not in the library collection but needed for individual research--particularly in fulfilling honors contracts or the senior honors project. The Library Committee has set aside special funds for this purpose, and therefore Global Honor Scholars should not hesitate to make use of this additional resource.

To take advantage of these privileges, contact Ms. Carol Creiger, Director of Library Services. Capstone Festival

Each year during May Term, MBU showcases the best senior theses in its Capstone Festival. Many senior Global Honor Scholars are nominated to present their work and compete for awards for best presentation. Other Global Honor Scholars play an important role in the organization and smooth running of the festival so that they are familiar with its operations when their time comes to be Capstone nominees. Members of the first-year GHS class are instrumental in publicity for the event. Members of the sophomore GHS class serve as room hosts and direct spectators to the proper locations, make sure programs, handouts and refreshments are available, etc. Members of the junior GHS class serve as moderators and introduce speakers, monitor time limits on presentations, and facilitate the question and answer segments. Gold Graduation Tassels

Thanks to a proposal by the 1998-99 Global Honor Scholars Society officers, all graduating Global Honor Scholars are eligible to wear a special gold tassel at Commencement. The tassel is purchased by the Honors Program and distributed during May Term by the Director of the Honors Program.

HONORS COLLOQUIA

The Bailey Colloquium

The Bailey Colloquium (INT 213) is designed to foster interdisciplinary and independent thought. During various semesters, the Colloquium’s focus shifts among various historical/cultural periods. Whatever period is being emphasized, the course features a multi-disciplinary approach, with faculty members from various fields contributing their expertise to the understanding of the art, literature, history, philosophy, and science of the period.

Working with other Global Honor Scholars in the course, each student is encouraged to

break down the artificial barriers between disciplines and, by the end of the semester, to develop a project of her own which will be interdisciplinary in its approach. In order to develop oral as well as written capabilities the colloquium concludes with a symposium in which each student shares her findings with her peers.

The Bailey Colloquium is open to all Global Honor Scholars (first-years through seniors) and has no prerequisites. This 3 semester-hour course is taken for a regular grade and carries three hours of honors credit. The Bailey Colloquium may also be counted toward either the Humanities or the Arts requirement for General Ed, depending upon the student’s choice of term project. Global Honor Scholars may retake INT 213 in order to explore a variety of historical periods.

Other Honors Colloquia

Each year, Mary Baldwin University offers several interdisciplinary Honors courses. Participation in these courses is restricted to Global Honor Scholars. Some Honors courses are one-time offerings and some are regularly offered on a rotational basis.

Global Honor Scholars will be notified prior to pre-registration if such courses are to be offered. Alternatively, Global Honor Scholars may request that a professor consider offering a seminar on a specific topic if there is sufficient student interest. All 3-hour Honor course proposals should be submitted by the faculty member to the Global Honor Scholars Committee six weeks before pre-registration. This will allow time for the committee to review the proposal and submit it to the Educational Policy Committee for information and/or approval.

To apply an Honors Course to the nine-hours of honors credit required for the Honors Degree, the student must receive a grade of “C” or higher in that course. An Honors course taken P/NC cannot be applied to the Honors Degree.

HONORS CONTRACTS

The Honors Contract is a means of encouraging an excellent student to pursue in greater depth the subject matter of a course in the student’s major or minor. Students who wish to complete an Honors Contract in an area outside their major or minor must include in their Contract proposal to the Global Honor Scholars Committee a compelling justification for the project, preferably its relevance to a major or minor field of study. (Merely needing a third Honors course to meet the Honors Degree requirements is not a compelling justification.). The Honors Contract option is available only at the discretion of the professor responsible for the course, and only to Global Honor Scholars. The contract does not affect semester hours or grade earned in the course. However, upon completion of the contract to the satisfaction of the professor, the student receives an Honors designation on her transcript. (Nine semester hours of honors credit is required for application for the Honors Degree.) In recent semesters, Global Honor Scholars have proposed Honors contracts for courses such as these: ANTH 208: Medical Anthropology, ENG 209: British Literature After 1780, PSYC 205: Techniques of Counseling, WS 200: Contemporary Feminisms. Guidelines The Honors Contract should involve:

● independent work ● research and/or creativity ● the use of higher level analytical and integrated reasoning skills ● work toward specific goals, building upon, but separate from, the regular course work

Objectives:

● a finished product, in addition to the normally required work ● commitment to one-on-one time between student and professor

The Contract should not be merely:

● additional reading ● writing an additional paper ● working as a student aide or teaching assistant

Contracts are not available in the following courses:

● 100 level ● teaching assistantships ● experiential learning ● physical education ● courses taken P/NC

Procedure An Honors Contract can be initiated by any Honor Scholar within the first two weeks of a semester by discussing possible projects with the professor in charge of the course and by making certain the final plan meets the above guidelines. If approved by the professor, an Honors Contract application (see p. 32) must be completed and signed by both student and professor. The contract should be submitted via email as a single attached Word document to the Global Honor Scholars Committee Chair no later than 12:00 noon on Friday of the second week of classes. Students wishing to pursue an Honors Contract as part of a May Term course must submit the contract by March1st of the spring semester preceding the May Term course. Since May Term itself is too short for students to examine a topic with the depth generally considered necessary for an honors contract, the contract must identify substantive work to be performed during the spring semester preceding the May Term in addition to work to be performed during May term. The committee will examine contracts received to ensure that each student is committing herself to honors work within reasonable limits and that all the above requirements have been met. Following committee approval, copies of the contract will be distributed to the Registrar or ADP office, professor, faculty advisor, and student, with the original remaining in the files of the committee. Evaluation and Reporting

Upon the student's successful completion of the contract, the faculty member will list "H" for "Honors Contract" on the final grade roster sent to the Registrar or ADP office and will notify the chair of the Global Honor Scholars Committee. The contract can be voided by mutual consent of the faculty member and student, with notification of the Chair of the Global Honor Scholars Committee. The grade for the course, however, remains unaffected by the success or failure of the contract.

A student who receives an "A" or a "B" on the course component specified in the Honors Contract will be awarded Honors credit for the course (with an "H" reported on the grade roster).

A student who earns a "C" or less on the Honors component of the course will not be awarded Honors credit for the course.

THE HONORS DEGREE

Successful participation in the MBU Honors Program culminates in the completion of an Honors Degree. The Honors Degree signifies three general areas of achievement: 1) the completion of a rigorous liberal arts curriculum (including a lab science course and the equivalent of the intermediate level of foreign language with grades of ‘C’ or better); 2) sustained academic achievement in all areas, indicated by a 3.5 cumulative GPA; 3) the ability to work independently and creatively on some worthwhile project, the ability to correlate results of that study with a body of related knowledge, and the ability to present both written and oral reports on the results of the study which support any conclusions reached. This third component is indicated by the student's successful completion of nine hours of honors credit coursework and a senior honors project. Global Honor Scholars apply for candidacy for the Honors Degree early in the senior year (November 1st for May graduates; March 1st, for January graduates). To be approved as a candidate, a student must have participated in the Honors Program (i.e. must be recognized as an "Honor Scholar") for at least three semesters, must have met the academic requirements stated above. At the time of application, the Honors Degree candidate proposes an honors project or thesis. In some cases, a student's senior honors project has been an extension of the senior project in her major; in other cases, students have chosen to pursue a project that bridges two majors or a major and a minor. As with honors contracts, the senior honors project can provide an Honor Scholar an opportunity to pursue a scholarly or creative project that explores a topic beyond the scope of a single course and/or discipline. The honors project or thesis must be subject to close supervision of a full-time faculty member, who is identified on the Honors Degree application as the Supervising Professor. The completed Honors Project must be defended before an examining committee comprised of at least five faculty members. At least three of those five members must represent disciplines outside the student's major field of study. To successfully pass this final requirement for the honors degree, a student's project and its presentation must be judged either "excellent" (A quality) or "very good" (B quality) by the examining committee. Procedure An application for candidacy for the Honors Degree can be submitted to the Global Honor Scholars Committee at any time after the beginning of the second semester of the junior year. At the time the application is submitted, a faculty supervisor and an examining committee must have been chosen and have agreed to serve. See p. 36 for an application form. Upon receipt of an application for the Honors Degree, the Global Honor Scholars Committee reviews the candidate's qualifications (GPA, course work, and honors credits) and evaluates the proposed project's focus and depth.

Following the student’s defense of the Honors thesis or project before the examining committee, the faculty supervisor notifies the Chair of the Global Honor Scholars Committee of the examining committee's decision. The Global Honor Scholars Committee forwards a list of those students who have qualified for the Honors Degree to the Dean of the College and to the Registrar or ADP office, so that appropriate notation may be included on diplomas and transcripts.

Guidelines for Preparation and Presentation of an Honors Thesis

1. A senior honors thesis may be a student’s senior project for her major discipline or may be a separate project. The recipient of the Russell Scholar Award may use her project to fulfill the senior honors thesis requirement.

2. To qualify for the honors degree, the senior thesis must meet the following criteria:

a. It must be an original work, and not just a summary of another’s work. b. It must be interdisciplinary – i.e., it should make use of sources, theories and / or

models from multiple disciplines. The student’s examining committee should include members of relevant disciplines when possible.

c. Honors thesis proposals that take the form of research papers must have all of the following:

i. a thorough and interdisciplinary literature review that includes scholarly sources,

ii. a clear thesis statement, iii. thorough and substantiated analysis that makes connections to prior

scholarly research, iv. professional writing, with correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, v. and clear documentation of sources within the text and a careful and

correct bibliography, d. Honors thesis proposals for creative works will clearly be more varied. However,

creative projects must show the following: i. that artistic or creative problems have been solved thoughtfully and

professionally, ii. that the application of research and analysis is evident in the project,

iii. and that the project meets expectations applied to professionals in the field.

iv. At the thesis defense, the student should be prepared to explain how her reading and reflection within multiple disciplines has influenced her final creative output.

3. A student who plans to write an honors thesis must consult with the supervising professor

in developing the proposal and throughout the writing process. She/he should submit multiple drafts to the supervisor and to other members of the thesis committee as they or the supervisor requests. The student must distribute a copy of the final draft to each member of the committee at least one week prior to the defense.

4. The thesis defense

a. The honors thesis defense must be separate from any departmental senior project presentation. It must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.

b. At the thesis defense, the student should begin with a brief presentation of her project. Most of the defense will consist of questions from the honors thesis committee.

c. The student must be prepared to explain her research methods and conclusions to a general audience. She/he must be able to explain models or theories used in her research and to explain the interdisciplinary connections made within the thesis

d. If the interdisciplinary examining committee determines that the completed project (including the student's oral presentation) is "excellent" (A quality) or "very good" (B quality) when judged against the standards for honors theses, that student successfully passes this final requirement for the honors degree.

e. The examining committee may decide that the student’s work needs revision before it meets the high standards for the honors degree. If so, the committee should set a deadline for thesis revisions and review. The committee need not require a second thesis defense but may do so at its discretion.

f. The examining committee may decide that the student’s work does not meet the high standards for the honors degree.

g. The decision of the examining committee should be reported to the Director of the Honors Program by the examining committee chair

5. The honors degree vs. distinction in one’s major and/or senior project grades

a. A Senior Honor Scholar may pass her senior honors project and receive the honors degree without being awarded "with distinction" in her particular major. (Likewise, students who are not Global Honor Scholars may receive the designation "with distinction.") The Honors Degree reflects a student's success across the liberal arts curriculum (as does initiation into Phi Beta Kappa). "With distinction" is awarded by the Major faculty, according to criteria set by the discipline..

b. A successful ("A" or "B") senior honors project need not reflect--or restrict--a senior's grade in her Majors Seminar or Senior project/senior exercise. As much as possible the senior honors project should be evaluated as a free-standing piece of work, assessed by an interdisciplinary examining committee. The degree to which that same project fulfills requirements in the Major is, again, determined by faculty within that Major. Similarly, grades in credit-bearing Majors Seminars and for Majors projects may reflect a variety of criteria determined, again, by faculty within that major.

c. To illustrate this distinction, the interdisciplinary honors project examining committee may determine that a senior honors project does not pass ("C+" level work or below). However, that same student may be awarded a higher grade by her Major faculty for her Senior Seminar course. Likewise, the interdisciplinary honors project examining committee may determine that a senior honors project does pass, but the faculty within that student's Major may determine to award a lower grade for her Senior Seminar course.

MBU GLOBAL HONOR SCHOLARS SOCIETY

Brief History

The MBU Global Honor Scholars Society was organized shortly after a meeting of Honor Scholars of the Virginia Consortium colleges, hosted by Mary Baldwin on February 26, 1983. Each college was represented at the meeting by three students and one faculty member. The gathering was initiated in order to provide a potential framework for interaction among honor students on the different campuses. Each college shared with the group the special provisions made for Honor Scholars at their institution. Then smaller groups, including one student from each college, worked together to develop ideas on how to coordinate and share activities in the future. Much enthusiasm was generated and plans were made to build upon the initial contact.

Following this meeting, the three students who had represented Mary Baldwin formed a steering committee to institute a new organization at Mary Baldwin, the purpose of which was to recognize and promote academic excellence on campus and to provide a means for members to become better acquainted with each other and with honor students on other campuses. Two officers of the Society were selected to participate in meetings of the faculty Honor Scholars Committee, thus providing a formal channel for student input into the policies and activities of the committee.

The original constitution was amended in 1987 and again in 1995. It may be found in the following pages. Amendment to the constitution can be effected as appropriate to the changing needs of the Society.

The faculty advisor to the MBU Global Honor Scholars Society is the Director of the Honors Program. Virginia Collegiate Honors Council

The MBU Global Honor Scholars Society is a member of the Virginias Collegiate Honors Council. The Council is comprised of colleges throughout the states of Virginia and West Virginia, including community as well as four-year colleges, all of which have honors programs in varying stages of development. The VCHC hosts two annual meeting. The fall meeting is for honors program directors. (The Fall 2003 Fall Directors meeting was held in Staunton, hosted by MBU.) The spring meeting features presentations by Honors students from various institutions. Certificates Awarded

Each spring the Society honors those seniors who are Global Honor Scholars by presenting them with special certificates at the spring Honors Convocation.

CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I

The name of this organization shall be the Mary Baldwin Global Honor Scholars Society. ARTICLE II

Members of this organization shall be those Mary Baldwin College students, designated Global Honor Scholars, who have maintained a 3.5 or higher grade point average for at least two consecutive semesters. The membership includes ADP and PEG students who have been recognized as Global Honor Scholars. ARTICLE III

The officers of this organization shall be a president, a vice-president, and a treasurer.

A. Elections:

The officers shall hold these positions for one year. The president shall be elected before May Term and will work with the outgoing president for the remainder of the year. The vice-president and the treasurer will also be elected before May Term. All officers will have been active members of the society for at least one year.

B. Duties of the Officers:

President: The president shall preside over all meetings of the Society. She shall plan and organize the activities of the Society with assistance from the officers, and she will work with the Director of the Honors Program to communicate the wishes of the Society to the college administration. She shall participate in the Honor Scholars Committee meetings as a non-voting member.

Vice President: The vice-president will assist the president in planning and organizing activities and will preside over meetings in the event of the absence of the president. She shall also participate in Honor Scholars Committee meetings. In the event of the resignation of the president, she shall become president.

Treasurer: The treasurer shall assist the president in maintaining any money earned from fundraisers and events. She will serve as the Fundraising Chairwoman, and work with the officers to coordinate events. She will also work with the officers on how to allocate funds. In the event that the president or vice-president is unable to attend a meeting of the Global Honor Scholars Committee, she will attend.

NOTE: The Global Honor Scholars Society account is not based through the college business office and is maintained strictly by the students. ARTICLE IV

This organization will have an ad hoc fundraising committee, and the organization will also have a Freshman Class Officer.

A. Fundraising Committee: The Fundraising Committee shall be chaired by the Treasurer as the need arises. This committee is responsible for all fundraising activities (including bake sales, raffles, etc.).

B. Freshman Officer: The duty of the Freshman Officer is to represent the needs and opinions of the incoming freshman class. The officer will be elected before Term 1 ends by her freshman peers. ARTICLE V

A. Amendments:

An amendment may be proposed by any member of the Global Honor Scholars Society. Amendments to the Constitution must be approved by a majority of the members of the Society present and voting at an amendment meeting. All members shall be encouraged to attend this meeting. B. By-Laws:

Those who have become members of the Global Honor Scholars Society shall not remain included in the membership of the Society if Global Honor Scholar status is later withdrawn.

Alpha Lambda Delta is a national society that honors academic excellence during a student's first year in college. Requirements for membership are a cumulative average of 3.5 or higher during the freshman year and inclusion in the top 20 percent of the class. Faculty Advisor: Dr. Carey Usher Beta Beta Beta

Beta Beta Beta is a national honorary society for students in the biological sciences. The Alpha Pi Chapter at MBU seeks to encourage scholarly attainment in the biological sciences by electing to active memberships those who achieve superior academic records and who indicate special aptitude for major work in the life sciences. Students in the second semester of their second year at MBU are eligible for consideration, provided that they are in good academic standing and that they have completed three semester courses in biological science with an average of B. The organization sponsors two to three programs each year for the College community. Advisor: Dr. Paul Callo Iota Sigma Pi Iota Sigma Pi is a national honor society for women in chemistry which seeks to promote interest in chemistry among women. The Argentum Chapter, installed on campus in 1979, is a regional chapter and includes members from other colleges as well as industries located in the Shenandoah Valley. Eligibility for membership requires a minimum of 20 semester hours in chemistry courses with a B or better average, at least one advanced chemistry course either completed or in progress, and a B overall average. It is unusual for these requirements to be fulfilled before the spring semester of the Junior year. Advisor: Dr. Peter Ruiz-Haas

Omicron Delta Epsilon

Omicron Delta Epsilon is the international honorary society in economics. Membership requirements include: completing 12 semester hours of courses in economics, achieving a 3.0 GPA in economics courses, and achieving at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. MBU is the first women's college in the nation to have a chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon. Advisors: Dr. Amy Diduch Omicron Delta Kappa

Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, recognizes and encourages achievement in the following five areas of college life: 1) Scholarship and Athletics; 2) Social, Service, and Religious Activities; 3) Campus Government; 4) Journalism, Speech, and the Mass Media; 5) the Creative and Performing Arts. Juniors and seniors placing in the upper third of their class and excelling in at least one of the above five categories and a member of the faculty, staff, or administration may be elected each year. Mary Baldwin was the first women's college to receive a circle of the ODK in 1976. Advisor: Ms. Sharon Spalding Phi Alpha Theta

Phi Alpha Theta is a national honorary society that recognizes those who excel in the field of history. To be elected to Phi Alpha Theta, one needs an overall 3.0 GPA, and a 3.1 GPA in the history field. Also, she must have completed at least twelve semester hours in history. The organization sponsors meetings, conferences, guest lectureships, and field trips to historically interesting places. Advisor: Dr. Mary Hill Cole Phi Beta Kappa

Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in Virginia was installed at Mary Baldwin in the spring of 1971. This oldest of honorary fraternities elects to its membership those who have the highest academic records and broadest liberal arts educations. The student selections are made from the top 10% of the Senior Class by faculty and staff who are already members. In exceptional cases students may be selected from the top 5% of the Junior Class. Students aspiring to membership in Phi Beta Kappa must be certain in planning their course work to include at least one course in mathematics, one in a laboratory science, and one year of a foreign language. Three quarters of their courses must be chosen from the liberal arts: specifically excluded are courses in business, computer science, communications, applied music, teaching assistantships, and the like. Breadth of academic experience, character, and outlook appropriate

to a liberally educated person are prime considerations in the election process. Two guest lectures on campus by distinguished national scholars are sponsored each year by the chapter. Advisor: Dr. Anne McGovern Psi Chi

The Mary Baldwin College Chapter of Psi Chi is the national honor society in psychology. The purpose of the society is to advance the science of psychology and to encourage, stimulate, and maintain scholarship by individuals in all fields, particularly in psychology. Membership is by invitation based on academic excellence. Students become eligible during their junior and senior years. Advisor: Dr. Chandra Mason Sigma Tau Delta

Sigma Tau Delta is an international honor society recognizing student excellence in English. The national organization sponsors annual conventions and scholarship competitions and publishes a newsletter and a semi-annual literary magazine. The Mary Baldwin Chapter, established in 1989, has sponsored activities which include career seminars for English majors. Candidates for Sigma Tau Delta membership are English majors and minors who rank in the top 35% of their class with at least a B average in English. Advisor: Prof. Rick Plant

Awards and Special Recognitions Class Marshals are chosen for their academic achievement. They participate in academic functions which include Founders' Day, Honors Day, and Commencement. The two students having the highest average in each class for the preceding year represent their respective classes. Freshman marshals are chosen after their first semester. Hillhouse Scholars are those students--sophomore, junior, and senior--who, in the previous academic year, achieved the very highest rank in their class. Their names are first read at the Founders' Day ceremonies in October. The Martha Stackhouse Grafton Award is presented each year at Commencement to the senior who has earned the highest grade point average in her class in four years at Mary Baldwin College.

Unselfish service is the basis of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, awarded each year at commencement.

The Russell Scholarship

The Margarett Kable Russell Award is given in memory of Margarett Kable Russell, editor of the 1902 Bluestocking and the first woman member of the Mary Baldwin Board of Trustees. The award is made annually by the Mary Baldwin Alumnae Association and the Board of Trustees. The recipient, selected by a vote of the faculty, is a rising senior outstanding in academic achievement, character, and service. The person honored is known as the Russell Scholar and works on a special research project in her field. A paper written on the research is bound and kept on permanent file in the College library. The award includes funds (approximately $1,000) for a research project designed by the student with a faculty advisor.

The recipient is chosen in the spring semester of the junior year according to the following procedures:

During Term 4 of each academic year, the Global Honor Scholars Committee contacts students in the top 10% of the Junior class, inviting each to submit a proposal for a scholarly project to be undertaken during the Senior year. The proposal should identify the faculty member who would supervise the endeavor and indicate in what way the stipend would be used. When submitted, the proposal serves as an application for the award.

Following receipt of the proposals, the Global Honor Scholars Committee selects a nominee for the Russell Scholar Award. The committee takes its recommendation to the faculty, and the faculty votes on the nomination. Public announcement of the person selected to become the Russell Scholar is made at the Founders’ Day Convocation in the Fall. Comments

Most Global Honor Scholars can anticipate that they will be among those invited to submit a proposal. Because the invitation often comes at a very busy time, it is wise to begin thinking early in the junior year about a project on which you would like to work. Discuss possibilities with some of your professors. The following listing can give you an idea of the subject and scope of previous Russell Award projects. In 2001, when the Global Honor Scholars Committee assumed the coordination of the Russell Award, the Committee agreed that if an Honor Scholar happens to be selected as the Russell Scholar, the Committee would accept her Russell project as a senior Honors Project. In such an event, the student must still follow the normal procedures for applying for candidacy for the Honors Degree, presenting her project to an interdisciplinary examining committee, etc.

National Scholarships Several national scholarships may be of interest to Global Honor Scholars. The Director

of the Honors Program serves as the MBU faculty advisor for the scholarships listed below. The following brief statements indicate the general requirements of a few of the most prestigious scholarships. The Honors Program website on the MBU homepage has useful links to most of these scholarship competitions. Fulbright Scholarships Eligibility: Seniors who will hold a bachelor's degree before the beginning date of the grant. Applicants are expected to have proficiency in the language of the host country. The Fulbright Program was created by Congress in 1946 to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. Grants are for graduate study and/or research abroad. Full grants provide round-trip transportation, tuition, book and research allowances, supplemental health and accident insurance, and a maintenance stipend. Typically, a grant is for one year of study or research. Fulbright opportunities are available in over 100 countries; the number of grants varies by country. Some countries also offer teaching assistantships. Applications are due in early October with in internal deadline of Sept 1st. Roxanne Russell, an Asian Studies major, was awarded a Fulbright to study in Japan for the 2005-06 academic year. Goldwater Scholarships Eligibility: Sophomores or juniors (rising juniors or seniors) who have a demonstrated interest in and commitment to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. A Goldwater Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,000 per year. Juniors may receive support for two years, and seniors for one year. Approximately 250 scholarships are awarded annually. The deadline for receipt of applications is mid-January. Interested students should contact the GHS Director in the fall semester. British Marshall Scholarships Eligibility: Seniors (26 years old or younger) who following freshman year have obtained a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or higher. Up to forty British Marshall Scholarships are awarded annually. These are tenable at any British university and cover two years of study in any discipline, at either graduate or undergraduate level, leading to the award of a British University degree. Applications are due in mid-October with an internal deadline of Sept 1st. (Website: www.britcoun.org/usa/usastud.html) Rhodes Scholarships Eligibility: Seniors aged 18-24 with academic standing sufficiently advanced to assure completion of the Bachelor's Degree before October of the following year. (The Truman Scholarship Program has a World Wide Web home page at http://www.act.org/truman.) The Rhodes Scholarship pays all approved fees of the college where studies will be carried out and a maintenance allowance paid directly to the Scholar. Appointment is for two years, with possibility for a third. Quality of both character and intellect are prime requirements for a Rhodes Scholarship. They seek intellectual ability based on sound character and integrity of character founded on sound intellect. The expectation is that Rhodes Scholars are persons who have moral courage, who have interest in their contemporaries, and who will esteem the performance of public duties. Approximately thirty Rhodes scholars are selected annually. Applications are due in early October with an internal deadline of Sept 1st. Rhodes Scholarship website: wwww.rhodesscholar.org Truman Scholarships Eligibility: Juniors interested in a career in public service. The candidate must also be a U.S. citizen and in the upper quarter of her class. The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards merit-based scholarships to students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or elsewhere in public service. Scholars are eligible to receive $3,000 for the senior year and $27,000 for graduate studies. One or two Truman Scholars will be designated in each of the fifty states. The deadline for receipt of nominations (by college) is late January. Interested students should contact Dr. Martha Walker no later than fall of junior year. Applicants must have selected an undergraduate field of study that will permit admission to a graduate program leading to a career in government. The application must include a statement of

interest in a career in government, detailing how the academic program and the overall educational plans need not be restricted to disciplines of history, political science, economics, or international relations. Careers in government can also draw upon training in chemistry, environmental sciences, foreign languages, mathematics, computer science, and public health. Udall Scholarships Eligibility: Sophomores or juniors in the upper one-fourth of their class. There are two categories of eligibility: 1) Students who intend to pursue careers in environmental public policy, and 2) Native American students who intend to pursue careers in health care or tribal public policy. Students must be nominated by their college. Each Udall Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $5,000 for one year. (Scholars selected as sophomores may reapply the following year.) The deadline for applications is March. Olin Fellowships Eligibility: Seniors preparing for careers in higher education and the professions. The Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Olin Fellowships carry awards of up to $8,000 per academic year, renewable for up to four years, but tenable for advanced study only at Washington University in St. Louis. Fellowships may be obtained in any of the following graduate and professional fields: Biological and Biomedical Sciences, the Humanities, the Physical Sciences and Mathematics, the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Architecture, Business Administration, Dentistry, Engineering, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, and Social Work. Applicants must submit, among other things, an autobiographical statement of 750-1,000 words that includes a discussion of the applicant's plans for a career in higher education or the professions and the reasons for planning such a career. Applications with all supporting documents are due no later than February 1st preceding the academic year for which application is made. Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Eligibility: Seniors and recent graduates (within past five years) who intend to pursue graduate degrees. The award is based on merit and unmet financial need and can total as much as $50,000 per year for up to six years. Scholars may use the award to attend any accredited graduate school in the US or abroad to pursue any graduate or professional degree, in fields from fine arts to medicine to history. The Foundation will award approximately 45 graduate scholarships in 2005 and expects to receive more than 1,000 applications. Each accredited undergraduate college and university in the US may nominate up to two students. Applications are due in late March for review by the Mary Baldwin College Global Honor Scholars Committee, which can select up to two applications to forward to the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. MBU Global Honor Scholar Application A Global Honor Scholar at Mary Baldwin is a student who distinguishes herself by her academic record, her broad-ranging intellectual curiosity, and her eagerness to pursue interdisciplinary and in-depth studies beyond the traditional College curriculum. Global Honor Scholars are participants in the MBU Honors Program and members of the Global Honor Scholars Society (student group). By applying to become an Honor Scholar, a student declares her intention to pursue an Honors Degree. Qualifications for Global Honor Scholar applicants : * A cumulative G.P.A. of 3.5 or higher in at least 24 semester hours of graded work at Mary Baldwin College . * The student must have at least three semesters remaining before graduation. (Two semesters is not an adequate length of time to fulfill the requirements for an Honors Degree.) Expectations: Global Honor Scholars are expected to demonstrate consistent and substantial progress towards an Honors Degree. The requirements for the Honors Degree are as follows: (1) Successful completion of the following courses required for Phi Beta Kappa candidacy with earned grades of “C” or above. One natural science lab course and foreign language through the intermediate level or the equivalent. (2) Successful completion of at least 9 credit hours of "Honors" coursework. At least

3 hours must be earned through an Honors course designated as interdisciplinary (INT), with an earned grade of “C” or above. The remaining 6 hours may be earned through any

combination of Bailey Colloquia, other Honors Colloquia, or Honors Contracts. Honors Contracts must be completed with an earned grade of “B” or above.

* An Online Honor Scholar who cannot take an on-campus interdisciplinary Honors course may, in consultation with at least two faculty members, design a 3-credit hour interdisciplinary course of study and submit this course proposal to the Global Honor Scholars Committee for approval.

(3) Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. (4) Successful completion of a senior Honors project or thesis. The Honors project must be supervised by a full-time faculty member and approved by an interdisciplinary examining committee. The Honor Scholar's proposal of an Honors project or thesis is submitted as part of her application for candidacy for the Honors Degree.

Requirements for continuation in the GHS Program: * Traditional Global Honor Scholars: Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher In general, a cumulative GPA that falls below 3.5 for one semester will result in a letter of warning from the Global Honor Scholars Committee. If a student's cumulative GPA falls below 3.5 in two consecutive semesters, she/he will lose designation as a Global Honor Scholar. (A student who loses her Global Honor Scholar standing may reapply to the program with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.) Application Process: The Global Honor Scholars Committee receives and reviews applications from GHS Candidates roughly one month into fall and spring semesters. Accepted students will then have the opportunity to take advantage of early registration. Deadlines for application: October 1st and February 1st. Each Global Honor Scholars applicant should submit the following to the director of Global Honor Scholars, Dr. Nadine Gergel-Hackett (nghackett@marybaldwin.edu)

1) Applicants should add the following documents as attachments to *one* application email. Please include “Global Honor Scholars Application” in the email subject line.

a. A cover sheet that includes the applicant's name, phone number, faculty advisor, and intended year of graduation

b. A short essay addressing the student's desire for admission to the Honors Program.

c. An outline of the student's plans for completing the courses required for the Honors Degree. See https://go.marybaldwin.edu/academics/honors/ for more information about the program, including Honors Degree requirements. Please note that the plan needs to list all courses already taken, include a good tentative plan of courses that the student plans on taking prior to graduation, and needs to clearly show that the student will be able to meet all major, general education, and Honors Degree requirements. Because the exact honors course offerings are unknown, they don't have to be listed by name. All other courses should be listed by name and the student should identify where in the schedule she/he would still have room to take all of the requirements for earning the Honors Degree.

d. A copy of student's most recent MBU transcript.

2) Applicants should request a short letter of reference from an MBU faculty member (instructor or advisor). Please request that the faculty member includes “Global Honor Scholars Recommendation” in the email subject line.

Honors Contract Application Mary Baldwin University Honors Program

Please prepare an application using the format described below. You should submit the application, including a course syllabus, electronically in an email attachment to the Chair of the Global Honor Scholars Committee. Description and Instructions. An Honors Contract is a means of challenging a student to pursue in greater depth the subject matter of a course in which she/he or he is currently enrolled. This option is open to Global Honor Scholars only. Honors Contracts will typically be in the student’s major or minor. A student must present a compelling case for completing an Honors Contract in a discipline outside her major or minor. The instructor of the course must approve this contract. Honors contracts are not permitted for 100-level courses, teaching assistantships, physical education courses, experiential learning courses, or courses taken P/NC. An Honors Contract must be substantially different from the regular course requirements; it should not merely consist of additional reading or the writing of an extra paper. The contract requires the student to engage in a higher, advanced, or more complex study than the restraints of the course typically allow. It must involve research conducted in collaboration with the course instructor, separate from and in addition to normally required assignments. Activities may include, but are not limited to, a longer paper than the class is writing that also uses different research methods or approaches; an oral presentation to the class or a public group; a research project; a video/audio project that reflects the student’s findings; and creative writing projects. In most instances, students should plan regular meetings with the supervising professor. Deadline. For a full semester course, the student must submit this application to the Chair of the Global Honor Scholars Committee no later than Friday of the second week of classes. For a one-term course, the application must be submitted no later than Friday of the first week of classes. After Committee review, copies will be distributed to the Course Instructor, Registrar or ADP office, Faculty Advisor, Chair of the Global Honor Scholars Committee, and the Student. In some instances, students may be asked to make revisions to the Honors Learning contract before the committee grants approval. Students should make changes as quickly as possible and resubmit the application. TIPS Successful applications (answers for 3,4, and 5 on the following page) are generally 250-500 words in total and typed. Upon request, the Director of the Program will provide a sample of a successful contract application and/or meet in-person to provide feedback.

Because it is not always feasible for an off-campus online Honor Scholar to take an on-campus honors course (such as the Bailey Colloquium), online Global Honor Scholars may meet this requirement by designing with faculty guidance an individual, interdisciplinary three-credit hour honors course. An independent interdisciplinary honors course must combine both literature and methodology from at least two disciplines within the Mary Baldwin central curriculum, i.e. two disciplines from among the arts, humanities, natural sciences, or social sciences. The interdisciplinary honors course must be supervised by at least two MBU faculty members from at least two separate disciplines. The two faculty supervisors should collaborate with the honor scholar in the design and requirements of the course. Interdisciplinary honors course proposals are not permitted for 100-level courses, teaching assistantships, physical education courses, experiential learning courses, or courses taken P/NC. Deadline.
