King’s College London and Yale working against global povertyProfessor Thomas Pogge, Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Aff airs for Yale University will be lecturing on the International Justice module.

President of Academics Stand Against Poverty, Professor Pogge aims to enhance the impact of scholars, teachers and students on global poverty.

Professor Pogge chairs the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute taskforce on illicit fi nancial fl ows, poverty and human rights.

Professor Leif Wenar, Chair of Philosophy & Law, programme leader sets out his vision for the Global Justice MA.

‘When we look at the international realm, we see leaders who cannot reach

agreement because their perspectives differ so much. One major source of this problem is that leaders lack a common framework to discuss global public goods like peace, human rights and poverty.

‘ I really believe this online degree will help improve the quality of international cooperation in future. By training and networking ambitious university graduates from all over the world, we can prepare our online students to be global leaders of the future in non-government organisations (NGOs), governments and international organisations.

‘ Designed for students who seek a degree from one of Britain’s top universities; for people with busy schedules; who learn well online, or who cannot take a year away from home.

‘ The online Global Justice MA fosters students’ awareness of contemporary global issues. Each module covers both philosophical and applied dimensions of complex political issues enabling critical evaluation of the principles, institutions and individual actions that arise daily in the news.

‘ Students will develop their collaborative skills, analytical activities and cross-cultural understanding through explaining issues from their own country and respond to issues initiated by students in other countries.

‘ If you are engaged in global issues, especially climate change, poverty, inequality, peace, truth and reconciliation this may be the ideal course for you. You’ll need a strong interest in philosophy, (although no formal background in philosophy is required) be self-motivated and have some university level training in analytical skills.’

King’s striving for global justiceDr Nicola Palmer, lecturing on the Conflict, Truth

& Law module, was formerly Convenor of Oxford

University’s Transnational Justice Research working

on issues of transition in societies recovering from

mass conflict and/or repressive rule.

A Rhodes Scholar, Dr Palmer assisted the UN’s

International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She

works with the Economic Social Research Council’s

collaboration project to formulate, implement

and assess transitional justice processes.

King’s working for human rightsProfessor Allen Buchanan, Professor of Philosophy

of International Law, lecturing on the Human Rights

module, combines research and teaching with

practical contributions to human rights.

Professor Buchanan has participated in national

and international public policy processes, serving

on every US Presidential bioethics commission

since 1981.

He is an Advisory Council member of the National

Human Genome Research and consultant to the

High Commission of National Minorities of the

Council of Europe.
