Dear Vendors, with this opportunity, the Global Lingo team would like to thank you all for the support you have provided during the process of writing our first Vendor Newsletter. Your collaboration has helped us massively. And we do hope all the things we have shared with you have helped you get a better idea about who we are. The first newsletter, released in August 2016, has been truly successful, and your kind and supportive words have encouraged us to continue to share our ideas with you.

With great pleasure, we are releasing our second Vendor Newsletter, the Winter edition.

Meet the team

In the first issue, you had the chance to meet the Vendor Management Team. Now we would like to present to you a part of the Project Management team, which is spread across three continents, in four countries – United States, United Kingdom, Romania and Singapore.

First in line is the team based in Romania, Cluj-Napoca, which is made up of five pretty ladies, who make everything possible for each project to go smoothly. They focus mostly on translation projects, so I am sure that you, our translators, have heard from them at least once.

They want you to meet them, so we gladly snapped a picture of them. From right to left, please meet: Georgiana Iacob (Team Lead & Senior Project Manager), Tünde Bálint (Project Manager), Natalia Nistor (Project Management Officer), and Andrada Homone (Project Manager). The fifth member of the team, not featured in this photo, is Delia Radziuk (Project Management Officer), who at the moment has another job – the most rewarding one – as a full-time Mom.

GEORGIANA

I joined the company in the spring of 2013, after graduating with a Master`s Degree in Translation and Terminology, and completing a translation internship at the European Central Bank Frankfurt. On a more personal note, I like to spend my personal time taking long walks, trying out a new recipe, or binge-watching TV series. Some might say I have an obsession for handbags, and an impressive collection of lipsticks and lip balms. My biggest passion is travelling and exploring new cultures, and would someday like to live in a coastal town in Mexico.

TÜNDE

I am a detail-oriented and quality-driven perfectionist, who likes to do things by-the-book. I value honesty and integrity, and I believe in kindness and modesty. Others would say I’m difficult to impress, although little things like a sip of coke, a bit of chocolate, or some good fresh grapes can make me quite happy.

NATALIA

I’ve been with Global Lingo for over a year now, joining the Cluj-Napoca office in October 2015. I have a BA in Applied Modern Languages and a MA in Translation Studies and Terminology. I have acquired experience in the translation industry, working both for private companies and the European institutions. I am passionate about traveling, always looking to discover off-the-beaten-track spots…and won’t miss a Marvel movie.

ANDRADA

I would describe myself as someone who is honest, caring, intelligent, hardworking, and ambitious. I (think I) have a great sense of humour. I am an easy-going person, and don’t get easily disturbed by downs in my life. I loooove dogs, especially pugs – I always wanted to have one of my own – and I also love spending time watching movies (TV series), listening to music, traveling, and spending time with my loved ones.

Linguist ProfileWe made it a tradition, for each newsletter, to include the profile of one member of our extended freelance team. Debra Parfett-Basua is one of our trusted transcribers, with whom we`ve worked for a couple of years now. She started by working on transcription projects at first. And, after proving to be a very good, detail-oriented writer, we have trusted her with our editing work; thus becoming a full-time editor with Global Lingo.

Here is a bit about Debra:

`I studied Fine Art, majoring in sculpture and drawing. I have always been an entrepreneur, doing different things – for instance, music promotions; two friends and I put on a local-music concert and dance party for over 10,000 people.

Until recently, I was running my own business, doing murals, furniture, etc., with a national contract for the floor design of a music-shop chain, employing – at one stage – 15 people. Two years ago, I decided I had had enough of working on building sites and closed my business. I started at Global Lingo doing some transcription work but now I am doing editing, which I am loving!

I hope one day Global Lingo has a gathering for all of us to meet (preferably Romania, as I have always wanted to visit Eastern Europe), and they open up a branch in South Africa; dream big.

I still love painting and drawing. I enjoy reading – especially graphic novels, watching movies (complete visual addict), stand-up comedy, architecture, art galleries, dancing and trivia. I love new challenges and learning new things. Change makes life interesting.’

A good CV makes a difference

First impressions matter! I am sure all of us have experienced moments when we formed an opinion about a person based on the way they look, act or dress. Let`s take, for example, going to an interview. You know you will meet your employer in person, so before you leave your home, you make sure you`re dressed the right way, you choose your accessories carefully, etc.

But what happens when the employers get to know you through your CV only? You cannot impress them with your personality and smart answers to their questions, so all your knowledge, all your experience, who you are, must be presented in that CV.

Working in Vendor Management/Project Management, we often come across translators who are brilliant, but do not show this in their CV. A bad-organised CV might send the job, which would be perfect for you, to someone else, just because their CV is better structured. We trust that, in the future, when we ask for your CV, you will take the principles shown on the right into consideration.

� Have a clear structure and an easy-to-read layout. Information should be purposefully structured, as opposed to over-crowding text.

� Provide the right amount of detail. A ‘Functional’ CV, in which you reflect only the relevant information to freelance role(s) you apply for, is preferable.

� Introduce your main specialisms only. No linguist is a specialist in all fields of expertise, no matter how experienced he/she is. Listing a lot of specialisms in your CV can be confusing when considering you for a project, as it is difficult to understand which subjects you are really capable of translating.

� Make use of headings and colours. This will make your CV more reader-friendly.

� Proofread your CV before sending it. Good CVs are written in correct English.

Time Zones visually explainedHere at Global Lingo, we are striving for providing a round-the-clock service to our clients world-wide. For this to be possible, we collaborate with you, our freelancers, who are spread all over the world. This enables us to virtually cover all time zones, and thus deliver our clients’ projects on time.

As great as this system may be, there are times when time-zone confusions arise between us, when trying to pre-book or assign projects which have different start and end times than your local time. Based on all the feedback the team have received lately from you, while being in touch during the project pre-booking process for client accounts, we have decided to shed some light on how to better manage time-zone information.

We have pin-pointed a few large cities on the time zone map above to illustrate different time zones and how time changes, as compared to the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). UTC is often interchanged or confused with Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Although GMT and UTC share the same current time in practice, there is a basic difference between the two: GMT is a time zone officially used in some European and African countries; whereas UTC is not a time zone, but the time standard basis for time-zone calculations worldwide. Consequently, no country or region officially uses UTC as a local time.

Above right is an example of how time and date modifies in these cities, where the point of reference is UK time/GMT (UTC+0). Given the fact that some countries/regions switch to different time zones during their Daylight Saving Time period, we recommend resorting to online calculation tools when converting time, such as: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html or http://www.worldtimebuddy.com/.

Learning the ropes of this is key to ensuring a smooth project-management process, timely deliveries and well-organized work agendas! Luckily, when GloZone is released, a time zone switching function, within the system, will be available. But more information on this will come in the next Vendor Newsletter.
