Sustainability and Packaging Design

Green Goes Mainstream in the U.S.

• In 2010, the Natural Marketing Institute’s LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) Consumer Trends Database found that 83 percent of the U.S. population is involved in green values, activities, and purchasing.

• This 83 percent of U.S. adults is now creating a $290 billion market for green consumer goods.

Green Consumerism Going Global?

• Globally, most consumers believe their purchases can make a difference and many intend to increase their eco-spending in the next year.

• Furthermore, the majority of consumers are willing to pay more for eco-friendly products and less likely to switch brands, when the product is green.

Tips for Sustainable Package Design

(1) Take a life cycle approach to package design. There are many Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools available for understanding the environmental impacts represented by different packaging options.

(2) Evaluate each component of your package.Ask yourself whether any changes can be made to use less material in these components without compromising product.

Example – All-natural sports drink-maker LIV Organic

Example – Artisanal food maker Premier Organics

Examples – iQ, SC Johnson

(6) Whenever possible design for recyclability.Example – Ecologic Brands

Tips for Sustainable Package Design

(8) Evaluate your distribution system for space-saving opportunities.

(9) Consider materials made from renewable feedstock.A product category that has undergone significant change to accommodate more sustainable packaging is household cleaning products.

Global demand for biobased and biodegradable plastics will rise 19 percent per year to 960,000 metric tons in 2017.

Despite the rapid rise in demand, however, bioplastics are still expected to account for less than 1 percent of the overall resin market in 2022.

Western Europe was the largest regional consumer of bioplastics in 2012, accounting for over half of global demand.
