THE PROJECT

THE CHALLENGE

The goal was to minimize the risks associated with changes to the SAP applications (S/4 HANA - RevenueAccounting,HybrisBilling,Finance).Therefore,testingofthecomplexEnd-To-Endbusiness processes to ensure the stability of the SAPapplicationsinanefficientandtimely mannerwastobeachieved.Manualtestingtakesalotoftimeandefforttotestthesecomplexbusinessprocessesend-to-end.Forthisreason,test automation using state of the art tools was decidedtobeleveraged.Therefore,SAPSolutionManager (SAP CBTA and Worksoft Certify) was selectedasastandardizedtoolfortestautomation.

THE SOLUTION

Inthefirststepmission-criticalendtoendbusiness processeswereidentified.Testcasedescriptionswith details on the test data setup, authorizations, detailedteststepsandverificationpointswerecreated – based on a template provided – as inputs tothetestautomationteam.Thetestautomation team reviewed the test case descriptions for the business processes along with the respective stakeholders to identify gaps with respect to test coverageandthenobtaineda›Sign-Off‹forthesebusinessprocessestobegintestautomation.Inthe second step these business processes were automated in SAP Solution Manager using SAP CBTAandWorksoftCertify.EachE2Etestautoma-tionscripthas2portionsnamely,the1stportionis used to setup the master data in the respective systemsandthe2ndportionisusedtoexecutetheE2Ebusinessprocessincludingevaluationofverificationpoints.Thetestscriptswerebuiltwithfocus on reusability at the level of screens and processsteps.Allthebestpracticesintestauto-mation on various topics such as scripting, para-meterization,verifications,screenshots,recoveryscenariosandtestdatasetupwereimplemented.Eachbusinessprocesscreatesmasterdataonits own to avoid any issues with test data as the testsystemwasusedbymultipleteams.Manycustom functions were built using SAP CBTA to addressvarioustechnicalchallenges(Example:ManipulationofXMLandtextfilestopreparedata for upload in the PI system to setup master dataintherespectivesystems).Thetestautoma-tion team worked very closely with the functional teamforclarifications,addressfunctionalissues

andgetresolutions,onadailybasis.Inthethirdstep,allthetestscriptswereexecutedbythetestautomationteamtoobtainafinal›Sign-Off‹fromallthecorrespondingstakeholders.Afterthisfinal›Sign-Off‹businessprocesseswereexecutedwith multiple data sets to ensure test coverage forthevarioussubsidiaries.Inthefourthstepthese test scripts were handed over to the Opera-tionsteamwhichisresponsibleforexecutionofthesetestscriptsonadailybasisin›Lights-Out‹mode to ensure that the mission-critical business processes are not broken due to planned changes inthevarioussystems.

THE SUMMARY

TheTestAutomationteambuiltmorethan250test automation scripts which includes more than200testautomationscriptsforthevariousprocessstepsandmorethan20testautomationscriptsforthevariousE2Ebusinessprocesses. AnumberofSAPapplicationssuchasSAPERP,S/4 HANA, SAP CRM and SAP NWBC were automatedalongwithlegacywebapplications.

THE ADVANTAGES

– The ROI was achieved after 3 Test Cycles– The test automation scripts were built in less

than6monthswithminimaleffortusing SAP Solution Manager (SAP CBTA & WS Certify)

– Test automation was done in the implemen-tation phase thereby the regression test suite was readily available for planned changes immediately after Go-Live

– Maintenance of test scripts was quite easy usingthe›Repair‹featureintheTestAutoma-tion Framework
