What is Globalisation?

A process in which activities are organised on a global not national scale, in ways which involve some interdependence, and which are often instantaneous around the world.

FACTS

·        Almost 800 million people — about one-sixth of the population of the world’s developing nations — are malnourished. 200 million of them are children. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

·        About 24,000 people die very day from hunger or hunger-related causes. Three- fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five. The Hunger Project, United Nations

·        Today 10% of children in developing countries die before the age of five. CARE

       Besides death, chronic malnutrition also causes impaired vision, listlessness, stunted growth and greatly

increased susceptibility to disease. Severely malnourished people are unable to function at even a basic level. United Nations World Food Program (WFP)

     In the last 50 years, almost 400 million people worldwide have died from hunger and poor sanitation.

That is three times the number of people killed in all the wars fought in the entire 20th century. BFWI

More than 1.7 million people have been affected by 20 years of conflict in northern Uganda. The British Red Cross has been helping many of these people who had to abandon their homes.

medicine?

What is globalisation?

People around the globe are more connected to each other than ever before. Information and money flow more quickly than ever. Goods and services produced in one part of the world are increasingly available in all parts of the world. International travel is more frequent. International communication is commonplace. This phenomenon has been titled “globalisation.”

How is it affecting medicine in Europe?

•Europeans in the medicine industry are able to travel throughout the EU, therefore providing hospitals that have decreasing numbers of nurses and doctors with newly trained medics.

•Globalisation is resulting in new technologies being developed throughout Europe leading to the up-grade in relation to medical supplies and equipment.

•Globalisation helps with better communication throughout the countries leading to better research being carried out and shared.

How do Natural Disasters affect Globalisation? Natural Disasters come in the form of

earthquakes, tidal waves, volcanic eruptions, etc Overall Natural Disasters DO affect globalisation

because when one occurs and the place and people are affected then the rest of the world becomes aware of their suffering and wants to help.

This can be achieved by charities offering money, food resources, medical supplies, blankets and shelters. Also volunteers travel out to different countries to offer help and support to the victims and help rebuild towns, cities, etc.

All this shows that the World DOES unit in times of need.

Example 1: Tsunami

This disaster was an earthquake in the Indian Ocean, 26th December 2004. The great tidal wave was the cause of hundreds of deaths and injuries, but thanks to the global aid received the country and it’s people are now recovering.

Example 2: Hurricane Katrina

This disaster was a Hurricane in the New Orleans, 29th August 2005. This hurricane was caused many deaths and numerous injuries. Also various building were destroyed but thanks to the relief received by the rest of the World, New Orleans and the population are now recovering from the damage.

Conclusion

Due to these Natural Disasters everyone realises how other cultures/countries can relate to each other and through this work they become more globalised in their out look.

Due to Globalization People around the world are more connected to each other than ever before. Information and money flow quicker than ever. Products produced in one part of a country are available to the rest of the world. It is much easier for people to travel, communicate and do business internationally. This whole phenomenon has been called globalization.

What Causes Globalization?

Globalization has in more recent times been increasing rapidly due to improvements in communications, information and transport technology. It has also been encouraged by trade liberalization and financial market deregulation. Globalization offers a higher standard of living for people in rich countries and is the only realistic route out of poverty for the world’s poor.

Technology and Globalization

Technology (IT) is a driving factor in the process of globalization. Improvements in the early 1990s in computer hardware, software, and telecommunications have caused widespread improvements in access to information and economic potential. These advances have facilitated efficiency gains in all sectors of the economy. IT provides the communication network that facilitates the expansion of products, ideas, and resources among nations and among people regardless of geographic location. Creating efficient and effective channels to exchange information, IT has been the catalyst for global integration.
