The urban studies major provides a broadly interdisciplinaryunderstanding of how urban dynamics shape both globalinterdependence and local spaces. It emphasizes how cities areincreasingly critical to the organization of economic, social, andcultural activities that shape and transform human experience. Themajor provides opportunities for community learning in Hartford,approved selective courses at the University of Connecticut or theUniversity of Hartford, study away in international cities, as well asinternships in a variety of urban settings.

Gavin Xu '21 reviews maps with the staff ofthe Ridgefield, CT planning and zoningdepartment as part of a semester-longinternship. Urban studies students intern ina variety of urban settings.

Each summer, the Center for Urban and GlobalStudies leads a field study course in China.Though the course content and location varieseach year, the course always focuses on urbandevelopment in China.

URST 101: Introduction to Urban Studies URST 201: From Hartford to World Cities 12 credits: To complete the major, students will take atotal of at least 12 credits Community Learning: At least one course must be acommunity learning course, the community learningresearch colloquium, or the Liberal Arts Action Lab Comparative and Global Perspective: At least one ofthe elective courses must be either (A) a study awaycourse or (B) an approved domestic internship that willexpand the student's capacity for awareness of globalurbanism Capstone requirement: Students must complete URST401. Qualified students (GPA over 3.25 and 3.50 in themajor) may choose to get honors in the major, whichwill require them to complete a one semester thesisthrough URST 497, or a two-semester thesis throughURST 498 (fall) and URST 499 (spring) Thematic cluster: Four courses must be completed inone of the thematic clusters. At least one course mustbe at the 300 level and no courses at the 100 level canbe counted toward the cluster.

This thematic cluster includes courses in urban studies,public policy, environmental science or other fieldswhich are built around practical, applied, orprofessional skill development.

U r b a n S o c i e t yThis track encompasses the general liberal arts areasof concentration, through courses in urban studiesbut also urban courses in many fields such as politicalscience, history, anthropology, sociology, art history,Hispanic studies, American studies, educationalstudies, economics, English or international studies,among other possibilities. Students work with theiradviser to make the thematic cluster a clearconcentration within the social sciences andhumanities.
