Welcome to Fall! The temperature is falling!(pun intended) gone are the days where we send our children to school with a jacket and they come home dragging it behind them (thankfully) please remember to dress your children accordingly to avoid exposure to illnesses this fall/winter season.

God Bless! Renee McMillan-JonesPTF President

Health CornerBelow you will find tips to keeping your child germ free as the cold weather season begins:

1. Discuss and model the proper way to cover your mouth when your cough, or sneeze.

2. Get those shots!! No one likes getting shots (especially children); but keeping our children’s immunizations up to date is an important part of defense against unwanted germs this common cold/flu season.

*Fact: Cold weather does not cause adults/children to get sick. Germs do; please remember to practice healthy handwashing techniques with your children, and use sanitizer (when handwashing isn’t available)

Were you aware that we currently have two year long fundraisers running? No? Well then it’s good that you have this newsletter!! Currently our 2019-2020 GSFCA Penny Wars are underway! Help me congratulate the 5/6 Grade class for winning the last quarter!! Don’t worry your students still have time to win Dojo Points! Quarter 2 has started and is underway! Only two more to go!!

Our second fundraiser is the 2019-2020 Funds2Orgs Shoe Drive! We currently have three large bags of shoes donated! Isn’t that awesome!? The people of Haiti will undobutably be very grateful; but they can use more of our help! Please reach out to your neighbors, family, and friends! Most importantly if you are abe to donate shoes yourself. Bags can be brought to the office and stored in room 206. We need volunteers to come inspect, prepare, and package the shoes for delivery. If you are interested please email Renee McMillan-Jones (PTF President) at [email protected] to advise when you are available. We are trying to keep preparation days to every other Friday currently; unless our needs change, then I will

November’s Teachable Moment: Give Back!

During this season of giving we often forget those who are less fortunate than we are. Now I know that we are faced with the realities of homelessness, and poverty in the communities around us; but at the Thanksgiving and Christmas season its easy to get caught up in what we re doing for our own families that we see everyday. I want to take this time to encourage each family to make an effort to reach out to someone less fortunate than we are. You’ll not only help someone else; but also give an excellent example of giving back to your children. Below are some examples of how we can encourage our children to give back:

- Volunteer as a family: pick a place locally that you all can volunteer once or twice per month

- Donate: As a family, take unused items(i.e. clothing, toys, etc,) and donate them to your local shelter, or international charity. In some cases you can receive a donation slip for your taxes.

- Give: As a family pick a cause to which you are interested in giving to.

- Give your child a three part piggy bank dedicate one section to spending, one to saving, and one to donations.

- Participate in #GivingTuesday and share your giving efforts with friends, family, and on social media.

Christmas Plays Everyone will love:

Enjoy Christmas programs at the Columbus Theatre throughout the months of November and December! A list of some interesting programs are found below:

update everyone accordingly.

Qwirky Thanksgivng Facts:

Thanksgiving started out as a three day celebration! Wouldn’t that be nice to have three days off from work instead of two!?

Sara Josepha Hale the woman who wrote “Mary Had a Little Lamb” is also responsible for making Thanksgiving a national holiday.

A Thanksgiving mix-up inspiried the first TV dinners! In 1953 a Swanson employee accidentally ordered way too many turkeys (260 tons…Yikes); to get rid of the them all Lead Salesman Gerry Thomas filled 5,000 aluminum trays with a traditional Thanksgivng dinner and sold them in stores for $0.98 each.
