Glasurit - CHANGE, CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY WITH GLASURIT INDUSTRY LEADERS

The event held from 13th - 15th of October, provided the opportunity for operators to come together to discuss trending business topics. The theme of the conference encouraged Glasurit customers to learn to turn challenges into opportunities to help achieve business success in an industry where market influences are constantly changing.

Glasurit customers were welcomed to the event by Tony Wiggins, Head of Coatings, BASF Australia and New Zealand with a discussion on business reinvention using relevant case studies to set an inspirational tone for the conference.

Chairman and Managing Director for BASF Australia and New Zealand, David Hawkins followed, sharing the personal challenges and opportunities that he has encountered during his career. He also took some time to talk about the impressive changes BASF’s innovations have made in the automotive sector.

Mr Stephan Rausch, Aftersales Director for BMW Group Australia then presented on the changes from conventional construction of a vehicles body to carbon aluminium and how technology has advanced for BMW and how this impacts the repair of a vehicle.

The closing guest speaker for the first day of the event was David Bartlett, former Premier of Tasmania, who has forged a career on innovation, technology and science. The audience was shown how the digital disruption can affect business and its future and how to look at new digital channels to engage in a new way. A thought

A gathering of 70 of Australia’s leading bodyshop

owners and senior managers made their way to

Hobart late 2016 to attend the Glasurit Access

Event, a 3 day conference hosted by the experts

from BASF’s world class refinish system, Glasurit.

provoking and insightful discussion that had many people talking after the close of day one.

Tasmania was the theme of the evening with guests free to explore Hobart and enjoy the beautiful scenery and delight in the produce available from many of the local traders.

Workshop groups were formed on day two of the conference to highlight various business topics:

• Vision360™, presented by Ian Johnson and Peter Sparks, BASF Australia

• Job Role Matching, presented by Anita Maini, BASF Australia• iBodyshop, presented by Stephen O’Brien, DNS Technology

Attendees were then treated to a talk from special guest and Australian sporting icon David Foster. Achieving an impressive 186 world championships, he was ranked 197th in the Sun Herald’s top 200 sportsmen and women for the last century, the only axeman to receive such honour. A very inspirational personal and proud Australian, David talked about ‘dreams do come true’ and left a lasting impression on the room. It was obvious that his fellow Tasmanians are also proud of him - he was witnessed walking out of the building and being stopped by almost anyone who crossed his path to chat.

Overall Glasurit Access was a big success with Tony explaining how well received the content was.

“Our team of staff and our distributors put together a superb event, and we have received overwhelming feedback from our customers. It is always important that we bring relevant and topical information to our customers and the feedback we received absolutely echoes this” Tony said.

The success of the event was validated by the overwhelming response from attending customers.

“I appreciate all that you did for my business over the conference period. I always take something away from these events and this

year was no different,” said Lucy Warrener from

Northside Panel and Paint.“The speakers were terrific and I will incorporate these into our business over time. It’s really important in our industry today, to get together on occasion to share with others, if for no other reason, than to realise that we all go through the same things, and face the same challenges” Lucy added.

The conference was followed by an evening of entertainment opened by comedian Cam Knight and closed by ABBA tribute band Abbalanche.

Inspirational David Foster, the only axeman to achieve an impressive 186 world championships.

Peter Sparks, spoke about master business success with Vision360™

< >Glasurit - FOR THE LOVE OF CARS, THE JOCKO LINER

The Jocko Liner - the first streamlined dragster

The Jocko Liner was built by Robert ‘Jocko’ Johnson in the 1950s.

FOR THE LOVE OF CARS, THE JOCKO LINER

What started as a love of cars in his youth, has transformed into a 37 year career for Greg ‘Ziggy’Sadler spanning spray painting, judging, retail, the corporate sector and creating hand madedesigner cars in the custom automotive industry. Today Ziggy owns and runs Ziggys DesignDriven Pty Ltd, which Ziggy and his passionate team have grown to be the premier shop of itskind in Australia.

With an unwavering commitment to detail and quality, Ziggys Design Driven has evolved from being housed in a two-car home garage to a large industrial warehouse which is a revolving door of new and exciting projects. One particular project that is world renowned, is Ziggy’s complete rebuild of the famous Jocko Liner, a 1950s US built dragster with an amazing history.

Johnson, a respected figure in the drag racing world, was well known for challenging the status quo of racing vehicles and the Jocko Liner is no exception.

The Jocko Liner is particularly unique as it was the first streamlined dragster ever built - the engine is in the back of the car which allows for faster speed, better control and improved traction. Johnson created just six models, and only four are in existence today. Only one of these models is in working condition and it belongs to avid Australian car enthusiast, Norm Longfield.

The Jocko Liner moves to Australia

When Norm found out there was a Jocko Liner on the market, he knew he had to have it, despite the fact that the car was in Detroit USA and he lived in Australia. He had also never seen it in person.

When the car arrived in Australia, Ziggy re-painted the exterior and Norm enjoyed several years of racing it in Sydney and Canberra.

The destroyed Jocko Liner

However, while racing a Warplane at Cowra airfield, the car crashed in spectacular fashion and was completely destroyed. Norm was thankfully unhurt.

Restoration – taking new shape

Determined to get his beloved car back up and running again, Norm engaged Ziggy to re-build the Jocko Liner from scratch. The car was so badly damaged, the parts that remained were delivered to Ziggy in a small box trailer.

Ziggy set about matching the unique body shape, design, decals, lettering and fonts of the original car. This was no easy task as his only point of reference were old photos and film of the original vehicle.Repairing the bodyThe entire body was repaired using fibreglass and gel coated to seal and protect the fibreglass and repairs. Once this was completed, the body was returned to Norm Longfield’s Race shop to be completely dry fitted, and then back to Ziggy to start the paint finishing process.

3. A 1958 FC Holden, being restored for a lady client wanting to drive the car she went to school in.

4. A 1954 FJ Holden utility which will be made nine inches longer and into an all-wheel drive with 1000 horse power mechanical running gear.

OTHER PROJECTS

The Jocko Liner is just

one of many vehicles

Ziggy has transformed,

and he continues to

be inspired by new and exciting projects that

come his way. Some of the cars he’s currently

building and some past projects include:

Glasurit - FOR THE LOVE OF CARS, THE JOCKO LINER

Ziggy put significant grunt work into sanding the body using a range of heavy duty 3M sanding materials. He then began applying the base coat. BASF’s Glasurit products were integral in this process, with 801-703 green epoxy primer applied to the body and after curing, 1006-26 spray polyester followed, taking the slight highs and lows out of the fibreglass body, giving it a more organic flowing surface. After days of sanding, applying more primer and curing time, the body was ready for its first coat of exterior paint.

Painting beginsThe exterior paint needed to be just right, with matching the unique vintage red and white hue and white lettering of the original model quite challenging. The painting process alone took six months from start to finish.

To start the painting process, Ziggy applied several coats of his custom white paint mix, involving Glasurit white 22 line direct gloss. Ziggy then designed and drew out the red scallops on the frontsection of the Liner which involved a custom mix of Glasurit red 55 line base coat. This was enhanced by a black pin line bordering the red and white.

Next Ziggy engaged Airbrush World to assist with signwriting: a crucial step in replicating the original Jocko Liner. In order to give the vehicle a unique vintage cream candy tint, multiple coats of Glasurit 923-255 HS clear was applied over the white basecoat to give the final product a yellow hue. Finally, the Liner was buffed, sealed and waxed.

The fibreglass body with a gel coat Green epoxy is applied to the body The Jocko Liner at a car show

1. Project X – design of a modern hot rod that looks and feels like a sports car. The design involved aluminium instead of carbon fibre and the car was to be rear engined with a big cube GM LSX with twin turbos and run on liquid injected propane.

The end resultAfter 18 months, the final result was better than either Norm or Ziggy could have imagined. In fact, Norm regularly tells Ziggy that it’s so good he still can’t believe it’s his. He also says it’s the only car he wished he could pick up the groceries in and with 2,500 horses running on Nitro power, that may be difficult!

These days the car no longer races, but is a regular at hot rod shows and ‘Cracklefest’ exhibitions around Australia. The eventual plan is to exhibit the Jocko Liner at the Hot Rod reunion and Pebble Beach, California.

5. Retro Rocket. A custom Tudor with an art deco design. This involved a roof chop, custom body panels and custom glass.

6. 1959 VW Karmann Ghia involving the entire body made out of sheet metal with a handmade suspension.

stand at Motorworld Sydney. With eight graduates

in 2016, the successful program continues to

provide the bodyshop repair industry with qualified

apprentices who go on to become valued spray

technicians.

James Green, Glasurit Trainer for BASF Australia Ltd presented the graduates with their certificates and awarded three of the apprentices with awards for their outstanding work and attitude.

• Most Improved apprentice was awarded to Elizabeth Kemp from RPM Peakhurst, about to enter her 3rd year of her apprenticeship. Elizabeth has long dreamed of becoming a spray technician and is determined to make it her career.

• Encouragement Award was awarded to Nathan Dickinson from Perfect Auto Body, who has a lot of skill and a great attitude. With guidance, Nathan will become a great spray technician.

• Most Outstanding Apprentice Award was awarded to Jesse Harris from LSR Auto Body in recognition of his exceptional work that he is doing in his workplace, eagerness to learn and the pride he takes in the work he does.

“Jesse has a great attitude, every time he is in the Glasurit Refinish Competence Centre he always shows respect for his peers and teachers” said James, “the awards are important to give each student something to strive for as we recognise that people learn at different rates and aim to encourage apprentices to strive to do better and further themselves in their career path”.

The Glasurit stand at Motorworld showcased ‘Project Sandman’, a 1980 Holden Sandman, apprentices were able to apply their training from the Glasurit EDUCATE program in partnership with South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE (SWSi) and see it come to life at the event.

With their knowledge from the SWSi TAFE Glasurit EDUCATE program, apprentices used their newly learned skills to refinish the vehicle with Glasurit in the colour Aquarius’ (GMH 17778), as chosen by the owner.

“While the special project is not the type of every day work that the Glasurit EDUCATE apprentices do, it gave the apprentices an opportunity to learn to work to a deadline andprovide high level service.

”It was a real job and gave them a sense of achievement at the end of the project” added James.

In addition to the project the Glasurit EDUCATE apprentices for the 2016 intake have produced some amazing results with key skills being developed in the program:

• Importance of health and safety in the bodyshop

• Identify and implement correct procedures in the repair process from substrate to topcoat

• Correct preparations for painting i.e. masking using a Range Rover body shell

• How to mix the latest colours i.e. white pearl, soul red

“The most rewarding skill to me is the attitude of the Glasurit

EDUCATE apprentices and the confidence that they take back to the bodyshop that they are

employed in” said James.

Prospects in automotive refinishing are broad, and apprentices could find themselves working in the future as bodyshop managers, at an OEM or as technical representative, colour designer or teacher. “BASF is committed to supporting careers in the automotive industry. We aim to attract talented, ambitious people and give them the skills and processes needed to be successful in today’s increasingly sophisticated and competitive industry,” said Ian Johnson, Technical Sales Support Manager at BASF.
