ABRILLANTADO

Se refiere a la etapa del proceso escultórico en la cual se pretende dar un fuerte brillo ala superficie. En este proceso, se utilizan agentes abrasivos para eliminar lasirregularidades de la superficie. Se puede realizar mediante el uso de máquinas oprocedimientos manuales.

BUFFING

Refers to the stage in metal working of creating a high polish. In this process, gentleabrasives are rubbed against metal to smooth away small surface irregularities.Buffing can be accomplished with machines or hand tools.

ACERO

(metal) Aleación de hierro y carbón.

STEEL

(metal) An alloy of iron and carbon.

ACERO DE DAMASCO.

(metal). Se refiere al acero que tiene una pátina ondulada. El acero de Damasco secrea al soldar piezas de acero, que posteriormente se doblan y se golpean a martillo. El proceso se repite hasta obtener el resultado deseado.

DAMASCUS STEEL

(metal) Refers to steel consisting of wavy patterns in its finish. Damascus steel iscreated by welding together pieces of steel, then folding the piece onto itself, andhammering that piece flat. The process is repeated until the desired line patterns havebeen achieved.

ALABASTRO

Referido en ocasiones a una superficie satinada, el alabastro es un yeso de texturamuy fina, normalmente blanco, que es fácil de tallar, y cuando es fino, se convierte en traslúcido.

ALABASTER

Sometimes referred to as satin spar, alabaster is a fine-textured gypsum, usually white, that is easily carved and translucent when thin.

ALEACIONES JAPONESAS.

(metal) Se refiere a las aleaciones que se emplean en Japón, como shibuishi, kuromidoo shakudo. Son aleaciones con base de cobre, famosas por sus brillantes pátinas.

JAPANESE ALLOYS

(metal) Referring to alloys widely used in Japan, such as shibuishi, kuromido andshakudo. These copper-based alloys are known for their ability to take striking patina colors.

ALPACA.

(metal) Aleación de cobre, zinc y níquel, que a veces figura con el nombre de "plataalemana".

NICKEL SILVER

(metal) An alloy of copper, zinc and nickel, formerly called "German silver."

Relieve realizado muy profundo con más de 50% de profundidad y que otorga unamayor tridimensionalidad.

HIGH RELIEF

A strongly raised or deeply carved pattern. More than 50% of the depth is shown

ALUMINIO.

(metal). Metal de color plateado y muy ligero, usado de manera ocasional por los artistas que trabajan con metales.

ALUMINUM

(metal) A lightweight, silver-colored metal used occasionally by metal artists. In a process called anodizing, aluminum is given a porous coating that can be colored with dye.

Without a specific form.

ANODIZACIÓN

(metal) En cuanto al proceso de tintura de una superficie de aluminio mediante elrecubrimiento del metal con una película de óxido de aluminio, mientras está en un baño de ácido. Después se limpia el y se sumerge en tinte orgánico, permitiendo que lapelícula de óxido absorba el colorante. La superficie se vuelve a limpiar una vez más yse sella con lanolina.

ANODIZING

(metal) Referring to the process of dyeing an aluminum surface by coating the metal with a film of aluminum oxide while in an acid bath. The metal is next cleaned andimmersed in organic dye, allowing the oxide film to absorb the dye. The surface isthen cleaned a final time and sealed with lanolin.

ARCILLA.

(1)Material terroso, de grano fino, formado por la descomposición de rocas ígneas.Cuando este material se combina con agua, está preparado para darle forma. Sometidoa altas temperaturas, el material se vuelve progresivamente más denso, asemejándose a roca.

(2) Combinación de rocas descompuestas y alteradas, que consta de una variedad desilicatos hidratados de aluminio y no plásticos, como el cuarzo, y otras materiasorgánicas.

CLAY

(1) An earthly material, finely grained which is formed from the decomposition of igneous rock. When this material is combined with water, it becomes plasticenough to be shaped. When subjected to red heat the material becomesprogressively more dense resembling rock.

(2) A combination of decomposed and altered rock consisting of a variety of hydrated silicates of aluminium and non-plastics, such as quartz, and other organic matter.

ARENA DE FUNDICIÓN

Un método de fundición en el que se usa arena húmeda contra un modelo para hacerun molde.

SAND CASTING

A casting method in which moistened sand is packed against a model to make amold.

ARMADURA / ARMAZÓN

Una construcción de madera, alambre, barras o tubos o cualquier otro material rígidoapropiado para apoyar la arcilla húmeda, yeso mojado u otros materiales utilizados por un escultor para modelar o construir una escultura.

ARMATURE / FRAME

A construction made of wood, light or heavy metal wire, bars or piping or any othersuitably rigid material to support the wet clay, wet plaster or other soft and pliablemixed media materials used by a sculptor to model or construct a sculpture.

BAJORRELIEVE

Método escultórico en el cual la superficie, de metal o piedra es escarbada, o se le quita materia. El plano del material trabajado es el que queda más elevado, dando unasensación de plenitud.

BAS RELIEF

Meaning “low relief”. Bas relief is a sculpting method in which the surface of a flatpiece of metal or stone is carved or etched away. The image is comprised of the raised or indented sculptural patterns which remain close to the surface plane.

BARNIZADO.

Uso del barniz para abrillantar la superficie endurecida de una pieza escultórica.

VARNISHING

Using a substance consisting of resin dissolved in a liquid, applied to wood to give a hard, clear, shiny surface when dry.

BASE

También se llama zócalo. La base es donde se fija o monta la escultura. Un bloque (decualquier forma, dimensión o material colocado entre una escultura y su pedestal). Todos estos términos se pueden confundir con pedestal, que también se define comouna base o cimiento!

BASE

Also called plinth. The base is what the sculpture is attached, fixed or mounted on. Ablock (of any shape or dimension and material placed between a sculpture and its pedestal). These terms can all be confused as a pedestal is also defined as a baseor foundation!

BIMETAL

(metal). Lámina de metal doble, compuesta por dos tipos diferentes de metal, que hansido fusionados y trabajados juntos.

BIMETAL

(metal) A double-sided sheet metal, which is composed of two different types of metal that have been rolled and fused together.

BOCETO (DIBUJO)

Esbozo o bosquejo de rasgos generales que sirve de base al artista antes deemprender la obra definitiva.

SKETCH

a rapid drawing or painting, often a study for subsequent elaboration

BRONCE.

(metal). Aleación de cobre y estaño. El bronce es uno de los materiales más usados enla escultura con metal. El término también puede estar referido a un latón de color rojizo.

BRONZE

(metal) An alloy of copper and tin. Bronze is used extensively in casting. The termbronze can also refer to brass that is brown in colour.

BRUÑIDO

Pulido con un objeto suave de la superficie de una pieza endurecida, sin cocer, paraproducir un efecto de esmalte que después puede cocerse.

BURNISHING

Using a smooth object to dry polish the surface of a hardened, unfired piece to produce a glaze-like surface which then may be fired.

A frame, usually in the form of an upright tripod, used for supporting or displaying an artist's canvas, blackboard, etc

CALIBRADOR

Un dispositivo con dos mordazas móviles utilizado por los escultores para realizarmediciones en redondo durante el trabajo. También se utiliza para hacer copias de laobra original..

CALLIPERS

A device with two moveable jaws used by sculptors to take measurements in theround while working. Also used when making copies of original work.

CARIÁTIDE

En escultura arquitectónica, la figura femenina que sirve de columna que soporta unentablamento. Por lo general, una figura elegante con vestidos largos.

CARYATID

In architectural sculpture, the female figure that serves as a column supporting an entablature. Usually a graceful figure dressed in long robes.

CATALIZADOR

Reactivo químico que aumenta la velocidad de una reacción sin sufrir ningún cambioquímico permanente

CATALYST

A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself suffering any permanent chemical change

CEMENTO

Mezcla de arcilla molida y materiales calcáreos en polvo que, en contacto con el agua,se solidifica y endurece. Se utiliza como adherente y aglutinante en la construcción.

CEMENT

a fine grey powder made of a mixture of calcined limestone and clay, used with waterand sand to make mortar, or with water, sand, and aggregate, to make concrete

CERA PERDIDA.

La técnica de la cera perdida consiste en realizar un modelo en cera que se rodea deyeso. Cuando el yeso se endurece, se calienta para derretir la cera. El resultado es unmolde de yeso para realizar la escultura de metal o plástico.

LOST WAX

A casting technique in which a carved wax model is placed in a container that is thenfilled with plaster. After the plaster hardens, the container is fired to melt the wax. Theresult is a plaster mould suitable for casting metal or plastic.

CHAMPLEVÉ

(metal) Técnica de esmaltado, en la que se crean unas celdillas vacías, queposteriormente se rellenan con esmaltes de colores. Se somete la pieza a cocción, yuna vez fría, se pule.

CHAMPLEVÉ

(metal) An enamelling technique, or an object made by such a process, wherehollowed-out areas are created in the surface of a metal object and then filled withcoloured enamel. The piece is then fired and when cool, polished.

CHORRO DE ARENA.

Método para grabar la superficie de un material rociándolo con arena, aplicadamediante aire comprimido.

SANDBLASTING

A method of etching the surface of a material by spraying it with compressed air and sand.

CINCEL

Herramienta con boca acerada y recta de doble bisel para labrar, a golpe de martillo,piedras y metales.

CHISEL

A hand tool for working metal and stone, consisting of a flat steel blade with a cuttingedge.

CINÉTICA.

La escultura cinética es aquella que posee partes que se mueven, mediante aire (comolos móviles) o mediante el uso de motores.

KINETIC

Active. Kinetic sculpture has parts that move, either through the use of air currents (aswith a mobile) or through the use of motors and gears.

CLOISONNÉ

(metal) Técnica de esmaltado, en la que los colores son separados por finas láminasde metal. Se trata del proceso opuesto al Champlevé.

CLOISONNÉ

(metal) An enameling process or works produced by such process in which the colors are separated by thin metal ribbons or wires to create a pattern.

COBRE

(metal). Metal conocido por su maleabilidad, bajo coste económico, y con muchas yvariadas posibilidades de acabado.

COPPER

(metal) A metal known for its malleability, low cost, and wide range of patinas.

CRAQUELADO.

El craquelado es un método de envejecimiento. Dentro de los acabados es uno de los más comunes, prácticos y fáciles de realizar. Se reproducen las finas grietas que se forman a menudo en la superficie de viejas pinturas al óleo, lozas antiguas y mueblesajados por el paso del tiempo.

CRACKLE

Refers to the decorative and intentional “netting” created on the surface of a glaze dueto a variation in the expansion and contraction of both the glaze and the clay body in the kiln.

Cura

Para ralentizar el fraguado del hormigón con el uso de revestimientos húmedos. Este proceso asegura la resistencia del hormigón en toda su masa.

CURE

To slow the setting of concrete with the use of wet coverings. This process ensures the strength of the concrete throughout its mass.

DESMOLDANTE

Producto para separar las piezas de su molde

MOULD SEPARATING AGENT / MOULD RELEASE AGENT / REMOVER

Product for removing pieces from heir mould

DIBUJO

1) boceto o diagrama hecho con un lápiz, o crayón en lugar de pintura.

DRAWING

1)picture or diagram made with a pencil, pen, or crayon rather than paint.

EDICIÓN LIMITADA

Obras que se producen en una cantidad deliberadamente limitada. Cada unidad de laedición es idéntica a las demás y es una obra de arte original. La limitación de unaedición incrementa el valor de cada pieza (a más limitada, mayor valor).

LIMITED EDITION

Artworks produced in a deliberately limited quantity. Each item in the edition isidentical and is an original work of art. The limited size of the edition increases thevalue of each piece.

EDICIÓN.

Número de unidades de una misma tirada a partir de una imagen o diseño. Normalmente, cada una de ellas está firmada y numerada por el propio artista.

EDITION

The number of impressions an artist makes of any one image or design. Usually, eachimpression in an edition is signed and numbered by the artist.

Disposición de un material a ser manipulado sin llegar a romperse.

ELASTICITY

The ability of clay to be manipulated without breakage.

ELECTROFORMACIÓN

(metal) Se refiere al proceso de creación de un objeto eléctricamente depositandometal sobre un forma maestra de cera. Después de extraer la cera, queda una carcasametálica

ELECTROFORMING

(metal) Refers to process of creating an object by electrically depositing metal on amaster form of wax. After the wax is removed, a metal shell remains.

ENGASTADO.

(metal.) Procedimiento por el cual se añaden trozos de metal o vidrio a otra pieza,también de vidrio o metal con intención decorativa.

SETTING / MOUNT.

(metal.) Procedure whereby Pieces of metal or glass are added to another piece, alsomade of glass or metal with decorative intent.

ENSAMBLADO.

(metal). Referido al proceso por el cual se unen dos o más piezas de metal sin usar elcalor. Los remaches son uno de los procedimientos más usados en el ensamblado.

COLD CONNECTED

(metal) Refers to the process of joining together two pieces of metal without the use of heat. Rivets are an example of a cold connection.

ENTALLADO /MARCADO

(metal) modelado del metal golpeando con un martillo u otra herramienta. Normalmentese aplica a sólo una superficie del metal, esta técnica se utiliza a menudo en conjunción con repujado para lograr mayor detalle.

CHASING

(metal) Patterned metal created by striking with a hammer or other tool. Usuallyapplied to only one surface of the metal, this technique is often used in conjunction with repousse to achieve greater detail.

ESCAYOLA.

Sulfato cálcico que se endurece al mezclarlo con agua. Se usa para fabricar moldes,porque es absorbente y puede reproducir fielmente los pequeños detalles.

PLASTER

A calcium sulfate material that hardens when mixed with water. Used in mold-making because it is absorbent and able to reproduce fine details.

A hand tool for working wood, consisting of a flat steel blade with a cutting edgeattached to a handle of wood, plastic, etc.

ESCULTURA

Arte de modelar, tallar y esculpir figuras a partir de un material cualquiera

SCULPTURE

Sculpture or statuary

Art of modelling, carving and sculpting figures from any material

ESCULTURA ARQUITECTÓNICA

Cualquier componente de un edificio o estructura que se ha modelado, tallado osoldado por un escultor e integrado de alguna manera en el conjunto para embellecer o mejorar la que, a diferencia del trabajo creado para la visualización de formaindependiente. Por ejemplo una cariátide o una chimenea ornamental o una repisa. Losdos temas o formas de arte de la escultura y la arquitectura han estado estrechamente relacionados a través de los siglos.

ARCHITECTURAL SCULPTURE

With relation to sculpture, architectural means any component of a building orstructure which has been modelled, carved or welded by a sculptor and integrated intothe whole in some manner so as to embellish or enhance it, as distinguished from work created for display independently. A caryatid is an example of this. And so is an ornate fireplace surround or mantel. The two subjects or art forms of sculpture andarchitecture have been closely related through the ages.

ESMALTADO.

(metal) Material transparente u opaco que se funde a temperatura más alta que elcobre, la plata o el oro, materiales sobre los que se suele utilizar el esmalte con finesdecorativos.

ENAMELS

(metal) A transparent or opaque glaze that melts lower than copper, silver or gold onwhich enamel is used as the decorative finish.

SPATULA / PALETTE KNIFE

An implement with a broad, flat, blunt blade, used especially for mixing or spreading.

WAX KNIFE

A tool for use in the art of wax modeling, clay modeling and plaster work.

ESTAMPADO.

(metal) Técnica de imprimir formas y texturas con herramientas sobre el metal.

STAMPING.

(metal) The technique of impressing shapes and textures through hardened toolscalled punches.

ESTARCIDO.

La técnica consiste básicamente en imprimir una misma imagen sobre una superficie, de forma repetitiva simplemente pasando pintura a través de una plantilla.

STENCIL.

The technique for printing the same image on a surface just passing paint repetitivelythrough a template.

FÉRREO.

(metal). Referido al hierro.

FERRIC, FERROUS

Referring to iron.

FORJA.

(metal) Técnica en la cual se dá forma al metal golpeándolo o amartillándolo,normalmente en combinación con calor.

FORGE / FORGING

(metal) A technique in which metal is shaped by hammering, usually while at red or white heat.

FORJADO.

(metal). Escultura o partes de escultura con metal a las que se aplica la técnica de laforja.

WROUGHTIRON

(metal) Work shaped by beating or hammering, often elaborately, for decorativeeffect.

FUSIÓN

(metal) Técnica mediante la cual se unen dos o más metales, empleando para ellocalor.

FUSING / MELTING

(metal) The technique of joining metals through melting.

GALVANIZADO.

Se conoce como galvanizado al proceso electroquímico desarrollado por el cual se puede cubrir un metal con otro.

GALVANIZATION

The process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron, in order to prevent rusting.

Tough elastic polymeric substance made from the latex of a tropical tree orsynthetically.

TOOLS

Device or implement, typically hand-held, used to carry out a particular function

HOJA.

(metal). Capa fina y flexible de metal, generalmente aluminio, cobre, oro, plata o estaño.

FOIL

(metal) A thin, flexible sheet of metal, usually aluminum, copper, gold, silver, or tin.

HORNO.

Instrumento utilizado para cocer arcilla, vidrio, metales o esmaltes.

KILN

A furnace for firing clay, forming glass or melting enamels.

INCRUSTACIÓN

Técnica por la cual se aplican diferentes metales, generalmente más preciosos a otrapieza de metal, con intención decorativa. Cada pieza añadida mediante este procesorecibe el nombre de incrustación.

EMBEDDING / INLAY

A technique in which an object is incised with a design, a colorant pressed into theincisions, and the surface then scraped to confine the coloured inlay to the incisions.

LÁPIZ

Barra de grafito encerrada en un cilindro o prisma de madera o metal que sirve paraescribir o dibujar.

PENCIL

An instrument for writing or drawing, typically consisting of a thin stick of graphiteenclosed in a long, thin piece of wood or fixed in a thin cylindrical case.

(metal). Aleación de cobre y zinc. El latón es un metal más fuerte que el cobre o el zinc,y su color es amarillento.

BRASS

(metal) An alloy of copper and zinc. Brass is a harder metal than either copper or zincand is yellow in color.

LUSTRE

Acabado brillante de algunas piezas de cerámica, formado a partir de sales metálicas.

LUSTER

A brilliant iridescent film on ceramic glazes; formed from metallic salts.

MÁRMOL

Roca metamórfica caliza o dolomítica, cristalina, de textura granulosa, translúcida encapas delgadas, susceptible de buen pulimento, que aparece mezclada frecuentemente con otros minerales que le dan colores y vetas diversos:

MARBLE

Hard crystalline metamorphic form of limestone, typically variegated or mottled, whichmay be polished and is used in sculpture and building.

(metal) A hammer-shaped tool of a material that will not seriously mark metal. Mallets are made of plastic, leather, wood, paper and horn.

(metal) proceso en frío proceso de elaboración de piezas mediante torneado,rectificado o corte.

MACHINING

(metal) A cold-process method of shaping material by turning, grinding or cutting.

Comúnmente, un contenedor hueco usado en el proceso escultórico, que posee laimagen en negativo del objeto deseado. Generalmente se realiza en yeso, aunquetambién pueden estar realizados de látex, goma o gelatina.

MOLD / CAST

Most commonly, a hollow container used in the casting process, resembling thenegative image of the object desired. Plaster is the most traditional material for molds,though they may also be made of latex, rubber or gelatin. Can also refer to a form over which materials such as molten glass and leather-hard ceramics are draped to shape them.

In sculpture, the core is the solid internal portion of an investment mould for casting a hollow piece of sculpture (such as a portrait). The amount of space left between the core and the mould (occupied by wax before it is "lost), determines the thickness ofthe cast metal.

ORO

(metal) Metal utilizado por su capacidad de brillar, su resistencia a la corrosión, y su valor. El oro puro se suele alear con otros metales, generalmente plata y cobre paracrear un metal más duradero.

GOLD

(metal) An element used for its ability to shine, resist corrosion, and join. Pure gold isusually alloyed with other metals, often silver and copper to create a more durable metal.

ÓXIDO

(metal) Alteración química que tiene lugar cuando ciertos minerales entran en contactocon el oxígeno. El resultado es un oscurecimiento del colorido del metal. Dicho proceso también puede ser acelerado o controlado para buscar efectos plásticos.

OXIDIZE

A surface colouring, usually brown or green, produced by the oxidation of bronze, copper or other metal. Patinas occur naturally and are also produced artificially fordecorative effect.

Un molde negativo, que se utiliza en la escultura para la fundición de metales. Secompone de arcilla y tierra ya sea arena o yeso de Paris mezclado con arcilla, yeso pulverizado, fibras de amianto y cola que se mezclan para el proceso de cera perdida.

INVESTMENT

A containing negative mould, used in sculpture for casting metals. It consists of either earth clay and sand or plaster of Paris mixed with clay, pulverized plaster, asbestos fibres and glue size when mixed up for the lost-wax process.

SGRAFITTO.

(cerámica) Del italiano, significa literalmente "arañar". Es un proceso decorativo en elcual se araña una línea sobre la superficie antes de someterla a cocción, para exponer la parte interior de la arcilla.

SGRAFFITO

(ceramics) From the Italian, meaning literally “to scratch.” Sgraffito is a decorativeprocess in which a line is scratched through a layer of slip or glaze before firing to expose the clay underneath.

SOLDER / WELDING

(metal) An alloy of a specific melting point and surface tension used to join metals.

(vidrio) Proceso mediante el cual se crea el vidrio soplado. Se ubica la pasta de vidrioen el extremo de una pipa y se moldea mediante el aire que se sopla por el otro extremo.

GLASSBLOWING

(glass) The process of creating blown glass. Molten glass is gathered onto the end ofa blowpipe and formed by blowing air through the blowpipe and manipulating the glassas it is rotated.

DRILL

Pointed or edged tool used for making holes on a material.

TALLA.

CARVING

Decoration achieved by cutting into the surface of an object using tools to shape something by scraping away portions of that material. It is also used to describe certain sculptures, especially wood.
