LOVE BITES PROGRAMOn Friday, 17 May, all of Year 10 participated in the Love Bites program. Love Bites is an extremely successful Respectful Relationships Education Program for Young People aged up to 17 years.

Love Bites is based on best practice standards for education programs as recommended by the Federal Government funded Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearing House and other leading academics in the area of violence against women.

Over 10,000 students in New South Wales participate annually in the Love Bites Program.

Love Bites consists of two interactive workshops: one on Relationship Violence, and one on Sex and Relationships followed by creative workshops.

Love Bites aims to provide young people with a safe environment to examine, discuss and explore respectful relationships. The program is a strength-based approach and views young people as active participants who are able to make choices for themselves and their relationships when supported with information and opportunity for skill development.

The program aims to equip young people with the knowledge needed to have respectful relationships, encourage and develop their skills in critical thinking and assist them in being able to problem solve and communicate effectively. It is hoped that as a result of completing this program that our young people can make the right choices for themselves and their relationships that are free from violence and abuse.

Feedback from the facilitators on the day indicates that our students were very mature and respectful in their approach to the program. Some very creative drama skits, musical items and artworks were completed. Some of these artworks have been displayed around the school. I wish to thank the facilitators from Hunter New England Health for their engaging program and guidance for our students. I would also like to congratulate Year 10 on their mature approach and engagement with this program.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORTWe are into the examination period of the school calendar. Year 12 students received their half yearly reports last week and Year 11 will receive their reports next week. This is a time when students can become anxious and even stressed with the work load. At school we have support structures in place for students to access. All Year Advisers, Boys’ and Girls’ Supervisors, Careers Adviser, Head Teacher Wellbeing, School Counsellor and Senior Support Teacher are available for support and assistance with study techniques, mindfulness and assessments.

Last week Year 7 and 9 students sat the NAPLAN online tests. Fortunately, we had very minimal issues with the new process of all students completing the test either on a PC or laptop. This week also saw our Year 10 students sit the Minimum Standards tests on literacy and numeracy.

One of our school goals is Quality Teaching. We have had support from Great Lakes Network to introduce Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) into the school. This is a program whereby teachers nominate to be in the program, they work in teams of 3 and review each other’s lessons based on the Quality Teaching Framework. The coordinator of the program collects baseline data from classroom lessons via a 10 minute observation and interviews from 3 students in each class relating to the teaching and learning process. This will be repeated with teachers and students at the end of the program to determine the impact QTR has had on teacher pedagogy, student engagement and student outcomes. The program is expected to continue into mid 2020.

Last week our senior students participated in Wingham Beef Week. More information to follow in our next newsletter.

On Wednesday 22 May our school captains, Cadel Beard and Kyra Edstein, attended the Midcoast Council meeting to receive their school captain’s plaque in recognition of their role within the school and the community. Congratulations to them both.

Just a reminder that the Wizard of Oz rehearsals are well under way. Students and staff are looking forward to the production. Please contact the school to purchase tickets. This is a whole school event, including staff from all faculties and students from across all years, participating either in acting, chorus, band, makeup, dance, constructions of props and backdrops, sound and lighting, ticket sales and promotions.

All parent and guests are welcome to attend. Parents will receive notification by SMS if their child is to receive an award.

Recognising the positive contribution that students make, is a vitally important way the school can promote and encourage our school moto “Strive to Excel”.

We ask visiting parents and guests to be in the School Hall by 11.45am, in order for you to be seated before the students. To ease congestion, we request that parents and guests enter via the carpark door.

BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH WALK - THE CORKERRecently, our Year 10 Bronze group tackled the Corker. While the walk again started with a road block (this time road works) that required leaving the vehicles and an extra walking section, the weather appeared to be on our side.

Unfortunately, the clouds opened and rain fell heavier the further we climbed until finally we sought refuge in Selby Alley Hut where we were forced to spend the night. Chloe, Keely, James, Erin and Ms Sneddon preferred to tough it out in tents while the rest took the other option and bunked down under cover.

With the rain continuing the next morning, the group made the trek to Junction Pools in surprisingly high spirits, stopping at Careys peak and Mt Barrington turnoffs as the look outs were anything but. Although everything was wet, Jack and Bradey managed to get the much appreciated fire going at Junction Pools as most attempted to dry their shoes and socks.

The final day, with Bradey in charge, saw an early start and cracking pace set as we headed for Polblue and our ride home.

Thanks to Ms Sneddon and those parents that dropped us off and picked us up.

Mr Rob Seale, Duke of Ed Co-ordinator

WIZARD OF OZ: 2019 MUSICAL PROFILE

Who: Haylee Mathew

Role: Munchkin/Ozian

Musical Experience: This is my first musical.

Favourite musical and why: My favourite musical is Hairspray, because I saw it live.

What are your first impressions of the play?

The Wizard of Oz is based on a great idea. I think it will be both fun and challenging to be a part of.

What do you think will be the challenges in staging the show?

Having a real dog playing Toto will be challenging. There are also many characters to fit on the stage.

What are you looking forward to most?

Can’t wait for the first performance.

How are rehearsals going?

Rehearsals are going okay.

Who: Mrs. Ingram

Role: Musical Director

Musical experience: Musical Director of twelve past musicals at GHS, including Grease, Seussical, Great Australian Rock Musical, Into the Woods and many other memorable shows. Many years professional experience in the performing arts industry, including performances at the Opening of the Sydney Olympics and several Opera House Concert performances

Favourite musical: My Fair Lady and The Pirates of Penzance

What are your first impressions of the play?

There are many underlying great messages about tolerance and overcoming adversity within this play. The songs are catchy and the script has some excellent lines, there are also some great characters that will emerge throughout the play.

What do you think will be the challenges in staging the show?

The music is extremely challenging and there will probably be some interesting moments in rehearsals. We have some great soloists who will certainly be making an impression on the audience. I think that the chorus backing groups will enjoy the songs, and they will certainly be having a good time learning all their parts.

What are you looking forward to most?

I think that one of the most rewarding moments is when we finally put the band together with the cast; that is when we start to see just how great our students are. After many weeks of preparation the moment that the cast hear the live band for the first time is always one of the best things about our musicals.

How are rehearsals going?

We have been having rehearsals each week at lunch time to work specifically on songs as well as Monday afternoons when we work with staging etc. The band has also been rehearsing on Monday nights for the last few months. I am looking forward to seeing some great singing, dancing and playing over the next few weeks.

LIBRARY NEWSWith Term 2 well and truly underway and the exam period just around the corner, the Library took a moment this week to participate in National Simultaneous Story Time (NSS). NSS is held every year and is an opportunity for an Australian Children’s book author to inspire, entertain and engage over 1,062,230 participants at over 8,255 locations (ALIA, 2018).

Books are more than something to read to satisfy your English teacher or to fill time with, books can also send us on an adventure to learn about our world. For example, this year’s book Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove is a fun book about friendship and accepting that we, as individuals are good at some things and not so good at other things and that is ok. However, how many of us actually know where Alpacas come from? Or how they are different to Llamas? What is a maraca? How are they made and who are they culturally significant to? Books have the power to inspire us to learn beyond the pages of the book.

For anyone interested in knowing the answers to the above questions, feel free to take a tag off our NSS wall and find out the answer.

PARENTS & CITIZENS ASSOCIATIONGloucester High School P&C is the parent body that works in close cooperation with the Principal and staff to enhance the learning experience for the students. We work closely with school staff on policy and other issues and arrange fundraising to provide facilities and equipment for the school.

Being a member of the P&C allows you to meet regularly with both the Principal and other staff members, hear firsthand about funding, curriculum and program initiatives and more importantly have a chance to offer your own views and opinions on a variety of issues. We welcome new members at all times. Membership is 50 cents. Meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7.30pm (daylight saving) and 7.00pm (eastern standard time) in Room 11 or the Library.

The next meeting will be held 7pm, Monday 17 June. Meeting minutes are available in the P&C section of the School Website: https://gloucester-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/parents--carers-and-the-community/parents-and-citizens-association.html

SCHOOL VISION STATEMENTGloucester High School aims to develop a supportive learning environment that engages all students,

teachers and community in the pursuit of excellence.

DAY FOR DEREK 2019 Proudly supporting the Charlie Teo FoundationDerek was only 32 when he lost his battle with brain cancer. Unfortunately Derek’s family is not alone when it comes to this dreadful disease.

Each year around 1,200 Australians are diagnosed with brain cancer, that’s one person every 7 hours. Brain cancer takes the lives of more children than any other disease and more people under 40 than any other cancer, yet the survival rate has barely increased in 30 years.

Derek’s family do not want any other family to have to go through what they went through. They want a cure to be found and that requires research.

In 2017, 4 years after Derek was taken, Derek’s family held the very first Day for Derek, to raise vital funds for brain cancer research. That year the Day for Derek, with the amazing commitment from the Gloucester community, raised over $26,000 for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

This year the Day for Derek is proudly supporting the Charlie Teo Foundation, an incredible foundation that are pioneers in brain cancer research to hopefully uncover better treatments and eventually find a cure.

Derek’s family are opening the doors of the National Trust listed, Airlie Homestead on Saturday 6th July 2019 from 10am for the Day for Derek. Airlie Homestead is a special place as this is where Derek spent the last 3 months of his short life.

Come and be part of this incredible day. Activities include Airlie Homestead and grounds tours, antiques appraisal, helicopter scenic flights, Devonshire teas, bespoke stalls, traditional spit roast, animal nursery, duck races, face painting, whip cracking, guessing competitions and much, much more.
