PRINCIPAL’S REPORTWe have made it to the end of Term 2. Once again, I would like to thank the staff for the amount of extra work they have done during the term to bring students up to date with the planned scope and sequencing of teaching programs, and to parents and carers for their patience and positive feedback. It was a new and fast learning experience for all.

Semester 1 reports have been distributed to students. If your child was absent when they were handed to students, you or your child can collect their report from the administration office.

I would like to remind parents the importance of making an appointment if they wish to speak with a teacher in person or via the phone. Our office staff are more than happy to relay a message to the appropriate staff member and they can then contact you to arrange a mutually suitable time to have a discussion. Due to the complexity within a teacher’s day, please don’t assume they will be available for cold calls. It would be more beneficial if the meeting could be pre-arranged and any information/issues to be discussed, provided to the teacher before the meeting.

Monday 20 July is a Staff Development Day. The day will consist of CPR and anaphylaxis training for staff, a live stream meeting with the Secretary and Deputy Secretary from the Department of Education (planning for the next 4-year School Improvement Plan), online compliance training and programming for Semester 2.

Last newsletter I provided a link to an article from Parent Shop ‘Not every act of meanness is bullying’.

The next one in the package is about the use of digital devices during family time and the correlated link with poor behaviour.

https://www.parentshop.com.au/digital-devices-during-family-time/

Finally I would like to wish our families and staff a very relaxing holiday, keep safe and we will see our students back on Tuesday 21 July 2020.

Mrs Trudi Edman, Principal

HEAD LICEWe have been advised that nits/head lice have been found in the hair of a student. Please check your child’s hair for nits/lice tonight using the methods recommended in information from NSW Health (http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/headlice/Pages/treatment.aspx) a copy of which is attached.

If you find any eggs or lice please commence treatment as recommended.

Further information on head lice is available on the NSW Health website (details above) or through the Department’s website at http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/studentsupport/studenthealth/conditions/headlice/index.php.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDWe are currenlty seeking volunteer helpers to assist in the preparation of and/or the serving of food for students. This means a commitment of time once or twice a term or less (if we get more volunteers) for two or three hours. Thisis an enormous, helpful contribution that you can make for the good of the school and its students. Please contact the Canteen Manager, Mrs Lisa Norrie, on 0447 727 388 if you are able to contribute some of your time.

MIDCOAST COUNCIL COVID-19 DISCUSSION MidCoast Council will be supporting Youth Action to host a conversation with local young people (aged 12-24) about how COVID-19 is impacting them. Youth Action is the peak body for young people and youth services in NSW and they are working to make sure the voice of young people is included in the larger discussion around the impacts of the pandemic.

The discussion will be held via Zoom and at this stage participant numbers are limited to 25 on a first-in, first-served basis.

MidCoast Council is seeking young people from across the LGA to be involved in this opportunity!

The discussion and registration details are:

Date: Tuesday 14 July 2020Time: 3 - 4pmPlatform: Zoom (participants will be sent a link and password prior to the discussion)Registration link: https://youthspeakmidcoast-covid19.eventbrite.com.au

Participants will need to complete a consent form prior to the discussion taking place (sent to them once they register).

BULAHDELAH GALA DAY/CHRIS HOARE CUPWith sporting restrictions easing from Day 1 of Term 3, we have been able to schedule the annual Bulahdelah Gala Day incorporating the Chris Hoare Cup for Friday 7 August (Week 3 Term 3).

It is Bulahdelah’s turn to host the event this year. Travel to the Bulahdelah Showgrounds will be by bus with a cost to be confirmed. Permission notes will be distributed early Term 3.

Although sporting restrictions have eased to allow contact and semi-contact activities, some restrictions and practices will still apply.

Most notably, spectators (including parents and carers) are NOT allowed to attend sporting events in school grounds or events held during school hours. Where schools are using community venues “exclusive use” of the facilities must be obtained and again no spectators are allowed. Safe health practices and hygiene guidelines will also be applied. If any parents or carers have any questions in regard to this please contact Mr Cameron at the school.

Sports to be contested on the day are 15 years and under Soccer (Boys and Girls), Open Girls Touch Football, U14’s Boys Rugby League and Open Boys Rugby League (Chris Hoare Cup).

Good luck to all teams!!

MATHS CORNER QUESTION (for students and parents)

Question: Rectangular cards, 2cm by 3cm, are cut from a rectangular sheet 24cm by 36cm. What is the greatest number of cards that can be cut from the sheet?

Previous Answer: Method 1. Make a table. Start with 30 x 5c and 0 x 20c coins. Then in each successive line, decrease the number of 5c coins by 1 and increase the number of 20c coins by 1, thus keeping to total number of coins as 30. Notice that every time we decrease the number of 5c coins by 1 and increase the number of 20c coins by 1, we increase the preceding total value by 15c. Thus there were 13 x 20c coins and 17 x 5c coins in the 30 coins.Method 2.Algebra: Let N represent the number of 5c coins and Q represent the number of 20c coins.Given (1) N + Q = 30Given (2) 5N + 20Q = 345Divide both sides of (2) by 5 (3) N + 4Q = 69Subtract (1) from (3) (4) 3Q = 39Divide both sides of (4) by 3 (5) Q = 13Substitute (5) into (1) (6) N + 13 = 30Subtract 13 from both sides of (6) (7) N = 17

* Maths corner questions have been provided courtesy of ‘Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) Inc’ an advanced problem solving course currently being undertaken by some of our Year 7 & 8 students.

YEAR 10 PHOTOGRAPHIC & DIGITAL MEDIA (PDM)For their first body of work, Year 10 PDM students were given the task of selecting 3 different techniques that they had to research and complete their own photos using ideas and techniques generated from their chosen artists. Given the interruption from the COVID19 forcing everyone to work from home, they have done remarkably well to get these works completed. Here is a selection of their works plus a brief comment from the students explaining what they have done in their photos:

‘All the Volleyballers are Looking at Me’ Ava Tuckwell - I used the blur effect in Photoshop to achieve this effect

‘Trippy’ Brooke Willis - on the camera, I changed it to a slow shutter speed to get this effect of blur and movement

‘He is Me’Haden Rae - I used Photoshop to create a negative, then I took it into the darkroom and exposed the photo paper and instead of putting the paper straight into the developer like normal, I used a paintbrush to drip the developer onto the photo to get the random and dynamic effect. I then use special photo paints to hand colour some of the images. I created a colour splash using Photoshop

‘The Hands’Jackson Smith - I took photos of the door onto the ramp outside the artroom and created a negative effect using Photoshop

YEAR 10 PHOTOGRAPHIC & DIGITAL MEDIA (PDM)

‘Swim’ Jessica Kernahan - In the darkroom I used drips of developer onto the paper

‘Under The Umbrella’Savannah Ashby - On the DSLR camera I used low f/stops to create a shallow depth of field which creates a blurred foreground and background to put more emphasis on the main subject in the composition

‘Hands in One’ Temeaisha-Lee Martin - I created a negative from my photo using Photoshop, printed a transparency using the laser printer then took it into the darkroom and printed a wet photo. I then used special paints for painting photographs to hand colour the image

‘Overlay’Ben Leitch - I took photos at Ellenborough Falls in the afternoon. I created negatives in Photoshop and printed negatives from the laser printer. I took these into the darkroom, exposed them then dripped developer onto the paper to get this dynamic effect. I use Photoshop to create layers to overlay the images for this effect.

LIBRARY NEWSThere’s been lots of borrowing happening here since our return to school. Well done to all those students engaging in regular reading, it’s a great way to develop such a wide range of skills and learn new things.

A great range of student artwork is currently on display in the library, including the Year 10 Photographic and Digital Media works shown in this newsletter.

Next term we are hoping to begin a collection point for Bread Tags for Wheelchairs. Our collection is off to a great start with the hard work of Danieka Wakefield. As part of her English assessment on sustainability, Danieka began collecting bread tags in her neighbourhood. What a great collection! For more information on how these tags are recycled please visit www.ozbreadtagsforwheelchairs.org.au you can start collecting over the holidays and bring them to the library next term.
