Gluing

The term gluing means to assemble parts with a glue or adhesive.

Titebond is a brand ofaliphatic resin

It is a type of glue or adhesive used to glue wood together

Page 3: Gluing The term gluing means to assemble parts with a glue or adhesive

Elmer’s is a brand of Polyvinyl acetate

another type of glue or adhesive used to glue wood together

Page 4: Gluing The term gluing means to assemble parts with a glue or adhesive

Many other adhesives may be used in woodworking

They include resorcinol, urea-resin adhesive, hide glue, contact cement,

epoxy cement, polyurethane adhesive, and super glue

Most adhesives require clamping of the wood while the adhesive

sets. Different types of clamps include:

Bar clampsHand screws

C clampsBand clamps

Spring clamps

Bar clamps glue wood edge to edge.

They should alternate bottom, top, bottom, top.etc. when gluing up long panels.

Page 7: Gluing The term gluing means to assemble parts with a glue or adhesive

When gluing edge to edge, alternate your growth rings. This helps keep the panel

flat.If you have the growth rings all go the same

direction, the panel will cup.

This is a hand screw clamp. Its most common use is to clamp two faces

together, such as gluing two flat pieces together to make a bowl.

A “C” clamp resembles the letter C.

Its most common use is to apply high pressure to objects

Page 10: Gluing The term gluing means to assemble parts with a glue or adhesive

Spring ClampsSpring clamps can be used for clamping flat surfaces

together, where light pressure is needed.

Glue ScraperAll excess glue should be scraped off before planing.

Glue Setup Time

• The clamps should remain in place after gluing for a minimum of 30 minutes. Planing,

cutting, etc. should be delayed for 24 hours.

Finished Surface Glue Removal

When glue gets onto a finished surface of your project, scrub it off as soon as possible with a wet rag or sponge. This will cause the grain of the wood to be raised, so after it has dried, it

will need to be sanded with fine (180-220) sandpaper before staining or lacquering. A

sharp GLUE chisel or glue scraper can be used to remove glue after it forms a skin(starts to

dry).

Contact cement glues plastic laminate to wood substrate for countertops

It is like rubber cement but much stronger.

Page 15: Gluing The term gluing means to assemble parts with a glue or adhesive

Contact cement can be applied with a roller, brush, or by spraying it on.

Both the wood substrate and the plastic laminate must be coated with the contact cement.

Page 16: Gluing The term gluing means to assemble parts with a glue or adhesive

Allow both surfaces to dry and put spacers between the two surfaces

When the two surfaces touch they will be immediately bonded. So spacers must be used to allow proper

positioning of the laminate. Also, the laminate must be a little larger than the wood substrate to allow for

trimming afterwards.

Page 17: Gluing The term gluing means to assemble parts with a glue or adhesive

After properly positioning the laminate, remove a couple of the spacers.

Move from the center out or from one side to the other. Then push it down in that area to “tack” it, remove the rest of the spacers and roll over it everywhere with a J

roller, working from the center out.

Routing the excess laminate offA router with a flush trim router bit is used to remove the excess laminate . A file is then used on a 45 degree angle to blunt the sharp edge of the laminate to prevent anyone being cut by it. If you need to remove the laminate, you must raise a corner, then

spray lacquer thinner between the wood substrate and laminate. Only do this in a well ventilated area.
