As we enter a new decade, we look to a wonderful future for advertising and marketing in the Bay Area. The Greater San Francisco Ad Club is excited to be a part of that future and we congratulate the numerous advertising professionals who participated in this year’s ADDY competition. While the industry as a whole and our market have faced difficult times in the past year, the level of participation in this year’s ADDY competition tells us that there is still an abundance of brilliant and effective work out there… and a community that wants to celebrate and recognize that work. The entries were strong across almost all categories of competition, and we had many of the market’s top agencies participate in the 2009 ADDYs.

In preparation for a successful year and decade to come, the Greater San Francisco Ad Club is evolving to become a more relevant and powerful force in the SF Bay Area advertising community. We are renewing our commitment to the mission of the Club … to drive the sustainable future of the advertising and marketing community in the San Francisco Bay Area … through a calendar of valuable networking events, through new leadership within the Board of Directors, through a strategic Task Force of key agency leaders, and most importantly, through our continued support of the next generation of our industry … the students that seek to make a place for themselves in our business.

The ADDY Awards Event at SFMOMA is just the beginning of a new and more visible Greater San Francisco Ad Club. We welcome and appreciate your interest, involvement and support. Thanks to all of the ADDY participants for your entries, a thank you to our judges for their critical eye, and congratulations to this year’s ADDY winners.

The ADDY® Awards is a labor intensive event as well as a labor of love.

Acquiring SFMOMA as the venue for the ADDY Awards Gala was a real coup. Then to have the San Francisco creative community respond with as many wonderful entries even in an environment that saw clients cut back on both creative and production budgets was gratifying.

So many Corporate Members, Board Members, Individual Members and volunteers have to be thanked that here’s not room in a sixteen page book to do justice to their contributions. To Tom Mincezski, Past President, Board member and worker extraordinaire for setting up the judging, to Jeffrey DeLong, Board member for keeping score and keeping us on track. To Gary Acord, Instructor and Student Advisor at Art Institute for lining up a great team of student volunteers to help with the judging and the set-up at SFMOMA. Diane Rames, Board member and Daily Californian Manager for her help and student helpers at the show.The creative talent was awesome as testified to by our judges lengthy deliberations and the tougher than past criteria used this year. The bar was set high and the SF Bay Area creative work cleared it easily. AD2SF did the Student ADDY® Awards this year and the entries were shown at SFMOMA with the professional’s work.

GSFAC can be especially proud of our 2010 Ad Person of the Year recipient, Tom Bedecarre, CEO of AKQA. His accomplishments and SF ad community commitment made it an easy choice.

Finally, to all the ADDY Awards Presentation & Gala attendees, thank you for making it a great party and honoring the incredible creativity that is the Greater San Francisco Bay Area advertising community.

Tom BedecarréCEO, AKQA

Tom Bedecarré is CEO of AKQA, the digital advertising agency that uses innovative ideas and technology to deliver results for the world’s top brands -- including Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Nike, Schwab, Visa and Xbox. AKQA has more than 800 employees in Amsterdam, Berlin, London, New York, Shanghai, Washington D.C. and San Francisco where Tom leads the corporate team.

AKQA has been recognized numerous times as "Digital Agency of the Year" and was also recently named one of the Fast 50 – "The World's 50 Most Innovative Compa-nies" by Fast Company magazine. The Wall Street Jour-nal featured Tom as an “Admaker to Watch” and he is a frequent speaker at industry events.

An enthusiastic entrepreneur, Tom was a founder and CEO of Citron Haligman Bedecarré, San Francisco’s largest independent advertising agency and a leader in launching Internet brands. Tom started his career in advertising on Madison Avenue at Ogilvy & Mather in New York and later returned home to San Francisco where he was a Vice President at Hal Riney & Partners.

Tom holds a BA degree from Stanford University and an MBA degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University

The Ad Person of the Yeartitle is presented to anoutstanding person each yearin recognition of their accomplishmentsand their unique service to the ad community. Nominees are putbefore the GSFAC Board of Directorsand must be elected byunanimous decision.

More “Power” to San Francisco ne January morning this year a group of adagency principals met for a “Power Breakfast”. They enjoyed a wonderful Postrio Restaurant breakfast and at the same moment laid out a new course by which to steer the Greater San Francisco Ad Club. A mandate to benefit the ad community through supporting education and career training in the SF market in addition to hosting the ADDY® Awards was given to GSFAC.This mandate is the impetus behind the “Career Development Panel” event in May and the con-tinuing commitment in awarding scholarships to students pursuing advertising related careers. GSFAC thanks the participants at that breakfast, the task force that was formed by many of the agency principals from that breakfast, and to the excellent guidance they have provided this year.

A third judge was slated, however, business demandsrequired him to cancel at thelast minute. Jason & Nader held an impromptu careerdiscussion with the GSFAC ADDY student volunteers thatwas delightful and inspiring.

GSFAC has made a continuing investment in students and youngprofessionals through workshops and seminars such as the Career Development Panel discussion & reception held at Publicis Modem.Over 50 attendees were able to do Q&A and interact with top agencyprofessionals and HR people. Part of GSFAC’s continuing commitment.
