We are in good shape, as our beginning balance 1/1/2017was $20,463.60 and we ended the year at $22,738.36, anincrease of $2,274.36. Our income for the year was 95% ofthe budgeted amount, slightly short due to overoptimisticmembership goals. The Chapter reduced expenses to adjustspending to 87% of the planned amount. I want to thank NALFL member John Key for conductingthe audit of the 2017 NALFL account. John verified the statusof the accounts and provided two valuable recommendations, both of which have already been implemented. We continue

to do well, thanks to all of you!

Launch STEM Careers Project (LSC)

Reaching Out to Local Students Launch STEM Careers (LSC) is a project of the NASA Alumni League FloridaChapter, approved in March 2018. Three NASA retirees, with 2 beingmembers of the NALFL Education Committee, started this volunteer initiative in2015 as an outreach effort to inspire girls and young women to pursue careersin science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The goals ofthe LSC Project are to:

Provide handson STEM activities in the classroom that simulate real lifescience and engineering projects for girls in grades 4–8.Train/mentor high school and college female students to serve as mentors tothe younger girlsMentor college girls by providing career services such as résumé assistanceand mock interviews.Host women at STEM networking events.

The LSC initiative provides detailed mentor lesson plans and kittedmaterials to use in the classroom so volunteer mentors can come to theschools without spending time preparing the exercises or having to purchasematerials. Some examples of these activities are: design/build test a MarsRover on budget; build circuit “bugs”, flashlights or lighted cards to learn aboutseries and parallel circuits; design/build/test foam rockets, etc. We go to eachschool 5 times during the school year to conduct hands on activities. LSC started with two schools in 2015 and each year we have increasedthe number of schools in the initiative. The plan for the next school year is toadd one elementary school in north Brevard, and Cocoa Junior and SeniorHigh Schools. In addition, we are expanding to 3 high schools that will mentorjunior high and elementary school girls. The 201819 schools are:

Westside Elementary and Bayside High School Engineering Academy—PalmBayCambridge Elementary—CocoaSabal Elementary and Eau Gallie High School—Melbourne
